I don’t know what I was expecting, but it wasn’t electric violin. This is uniquely different.
The opener, Vital Statistics starts out with this deep droning electric violin sound and Afinson’s almost spooky vocals over the top. It calls to mind early Björk.
There is so much going on here. Don’t even think of listening to this CD at a low volume at work. It just won’t do. If you must, at least use the headphones and crank it.
I don’t even know how to classify this. It’s not really rock, not pop, certainly not blues or folk…electronica? I guess. But it’s not a “wall-of-sound-ing” as most other electronica is. I guess it’s good not to fit in a box, huh?
I’m amazed that something this unique and cool is coming out of my hometown! OK well, it’s not, really… Jane Anfinson is currently living in Arkansas but she’s originally from Minneapolis and much of this was recorded here.
I don’t know how much more I can say, it’s just really unique, you’ll have to listen to samples to see if it’s your bag, but I think many of you will really dig this.
