Review by Amy Lotsberg Producer of Collected Sounds

I liked Coles Whalen’s EP so well it made it to my top CDs of 2004 even though it was only six songs long. What made the EP great makes this full length fabulous. That is, Whalen’s loveable voice and true gift for songwriting.

This is a collection of well-written, often catchy tunes that will stick with you long after you’ve listened to it.

Whalen’s voice is soothing and lovely. It is a perfect match for the music that it glides gently and (seemingly) effortlessly over.

For lovers of good solid folky pop, you can’t go wrong with Gee Baby or anything else by Coles Whalen that you can get your hands on. This one’s going to be in my personal rotation for quite some time.

My Favorites: Shine, Twice Weepin’ Heart, and Sevens (Which was on the EP as well). But really they’re all pretty good songs, it’s hard to pick just a few.

Comment: Consider me the Coles Whalen “Uber Fan”. Everything I have heard from Coles is note worthy especially considering that she goes it solo on so many of her tracks. I’ve seen her half a dozen times in person, and I’ve always felt that her voice is like that of a world class athlete (incredibly well trained, and impressively tuned). She has mile more talent than what we have heard so far. If she puts out a disc with a full band, we will all get to hear just how powerful that subtley smoldering voice really is! Gee Baby is worth the investment, and frankly makes a good gift for anyone who likes folk/pop/blues or jazz.

Comment: I’ve never “seen” Coles, but I have both her albums. If talent alone is enough to be a super star, Coles has it. GREAT voice! Listen closely, you’ll “feel” what she’s singing about. It’s so much more than just the notes and lyrics. It’s emotionm, melody, and beauty in every note.

Comment: I saw Coles tonight at Borders in Glendale, California. I was very impressed with her stage presence, how well she communicated to the audience and her guitar and piano playing. Her singing was soulful yet almost angelic in the sense that it carried me to a higher, more pleasant place. Any artist that can do that is like what they say on the VISA commercials–priceless. But an artist still needs to be supported so I bought both her CDs on the spot. I suggest checking out her website (www.coleswhalen.com) for her live performances or you can just buy her CDs for a great aesthetic experience. Thanks Coles!

Comment: Coles Whalen has a voice that seems to float over the ever so articulate guitar playing. I like Manhattan, The Hand That Gives the Rose, Sevens, and Turn Away. It’s been in my CD player since I got it a week ago. Thanks Coles for sharing your amazing music!!
