Evelyn Downing, Jamie Field and Andrew Garman make up Mermaid Kiss. It’s a continuation of Evelyn’s solo EPs and its even more lush and accomplished music.
The eclectic sound is an ample support of Downing’s sweet vocal and the strong songs. The simple yet heartfelt title track leads to the more orchestrated
“Breathing Under Water” a track that builds on the bands strengths. Its folksy feel and sad lyric make it a very moving song.
The evocative “Write My Name in Stars” showcases the full extent of Downing’s voice. She has grown as a singer and can compete with the best now. Her flute is also used well. It’s an underused instrument this side of Jethro Tull so it’s always nice to hear.
“Blind” is somewhat like welsh band Karnataka and has an epic nature.
The subtle yet grand “Soundchaser” is one of the standouts. Evelyn’s vocals and Jamie’s guitars are in perfect synch.
Elsewhere the sweet ballad “Fated” and the upbeat “Some Days are Like This” are just great.
Taken as a whole the Mermaid Kiss album is a real joy to hear. The band have really found their identity and it shows.
