MySpace Hack

I found out abut something the other day that kind of irked me.

As you may have noticed on MySpace, when an artist uploads a song for your listening pleasure, they can choose whether they want it to be downloadable or only streaming. The reasons for not allowing downloads are many, but one I can think of is that the song is perhaps not officially released. It’s only a demo or something, but it’s new and not available anywhere else. They are offering it to us just to test out. Either way, it’s the artist’s prerogative whether they want to give it away for free or not.

The other day I found a website that is actually a hack into MySpace. It allows people to download any song on MySpace even if the artist who placed it there does not want you to. I will not give the link because I don’t want to give them any publicity and also because I believe it could be a way to pass on viruses. But I’m sure you can find it if you try. But I would not suggest using it for the above-mentioned reasons.

What do you think about this? I’m pretty sure it’s not sanctioned by MySpace, in fact it’s owned by some yahoo in Madrid. My hope is that once MySpace learns about it, they will take him down. But who knows. I’ve been hearing some other awful things about MySpace lately so I can’t be sure. I’m not going to go into those allegations because I can’t confirm they are true and I also don’t want to lose my MySpace page. Yes, I am a coward.

Your thoughts?

08/21/2007: UPDATE:

It’s down, but the a**hat who created it seems to think it’s his job to give away the code to everyone. It’s not like the [Cookie Incident]. MySpace has not done anything wrong, it’s this schmo who has done a real disservice to artists.
