I reviewed Francesca Lee’s [self-titled debut] some years ago. I really liked it but it didn’t blow me away. At that time she reminded me of Ani DiFranco. Well, she’s changed. It’s like night and day.
This album is filled with lovely, melodic songs that channel more Nerina Pallot or Beth Waters than any hipster folkie.*
Francesca’s voice is beautiful. It’s peaceful and calming and suits this type of music very nicely.
The music is more mainstream and generally I’d say too much so for me (as I have with a few other albums lately) but I’m going to go ahead and say it’s working for me this time. Because I really really like it.
Maybe Today is very catchy and one that has stuck with me even when I’m not currently listening.
I also really like the title track, The Pieces Left.
A beautiful record.
*Not that I’m necessarily calling Ani a hipster, I meant more the genre. Ani is a gogdess and a genius and continues to be one of my favorite artists of all time. Lee just isn’t similar to anymore, and that’s not a bad thing at all.
