Review by Amy Lotsberg Producer of Collected Sounds

I’ve been a fan of Cake’s since way back. I hadn’t listened to them in awhile until a couple of months ago when someone on a message board I am on mentioned them. It had me feeling nostalgic so I dug out all their previous CDs one day and listened to them in my car for a week. It was about 3 days after that I heard they were releasing a new album. The world is a mysterious place.

Showroom of Compassion is their newest album since 2007’s album of B-Sides and Rarities (of which I wasn’t even aware!).

I can’t say their sound has changed much, but that’s a good thing. They have a very distinctive style that most of us have come to love and it’s still going strong.

Opener Federal Funding is great at welcoming you back into Cake’s distinctive sound.

Mustache Man (Wasted) is a super fun dancy party song. You’ll have fun singing along with this one with a beer in your hand. There’s always at least one song on their records that is the sing-along favorite, this might be it.

I also really like Sick of You. Very catchy and radio friendly. In fact, I think I may have heard this one the radio. It’s got that great guitar line we’ve come to expect from Cake.

The Winter has a cool Beatle’s quality.

Italian Guy is silly and great.

This is a really fun album from a band who never disappoints.
