Unfortunately, it’s the only way for them to remain a viable competitor to iTunes.

From the artist side, emusic is one of those is-this-really-a-good-thing deals, as the very fact of the subscription model means that there is going to be less money in the pot to pay artists for each downloaded track. In an ideal world, emusic will see increased subscriptions because of their expanded catalog, which they can then turn around and pass back to the artists whose tracks are actually getting downloaded. Alas, we don’t live in an ideal world, but it’s nice to dream.:}
