Review by Anna Maria Stjärnell
Maria Doyle Kennedy had a role in “The Commitments”, and her new solo record is a different sort of a thing. The partly titled record finds her singing with a lovely voice.
“Babes” is soulful and gorgeous. Kennedy’s vocal works against a very old-fashioned soul arrangement. Justin Carroll’s Hammond gives it a special feel. I’m reminded of Maria McKee.
“Snow White” is a mid-paced rocker with Kennedy singing of the fairy tale with urgency.
“Safe from Harm” is lullaby-soft and with a gossamer lead vocal.
“Revenge is Sour” is an angry rant with enough sense of melody to be great.
“Charm” is a marvelous record from an underrated singer.
