Review by David Adair

The Real debut

When you have had to make your voice heard alongside the likes of Rufus Wainwright and Anthony and the Johnsons, it is not surprising that you have a commanding voice that could bring a room to a stand still.

Joan possesses the winding vocal strut of the two aforementioned artists and combines this with grinding melodies to produce longing reflection in the style of Emilliana Torrini via opener ‘My Gurl’.

Then the six track mini-album builds to take a gamble on ‘The Game Of life’ that bobs and weaves like Tyson in his prime, then hitting you hard philosophically speaking, with wispily sung lyrics and a rumbling accompaniment that shows up the versatility on offer.

Note: this is a review of the EP that came out just before the full length.
