Album Name: Etarlis
Artist: Mermaid Kiss
Year/Label: 2007 / Independent
Review by Anna Maria Stjärnell
Mermaid Kiss has released some intriguing works and this is no exception.
Jamie Field and Evelyn Downing have written a fantasy story together that this album is based on. It tells of two young girls lost in a strange world.
After being absent to handle her studies Downing returns to lead vocal duties aided by Kate Belcher. The resulting album has depth and nuance and stunning songs.
“Walking with Ghosts” is layered and sweet, Downing’s flute adding to the mood.
“Nowhere to Hide” has Kate Belcher supplying an angelic vocal to a haunted backdrop. The song develops into an epic with long instrumental passages.
The album closes with the lovely “The City of Clouds(Quay-lin)” a stunning song in every respect.
Mermaid Kiss has made one of the year’s best albums.
