Album Name: How it Is
Artist: Holly Figueroa
Year/Label: 2002 / Cake Records
Review by Amy Lotsberg Producer of Collected Sounds
Holly Figueroa is the founder of [IndieGrrl], which is a fantastic community for female independent musicians and others in the industry. She should win some award for that alone. But she is also an amazing singer/songwriter. I can’t believe I waited so long to hear her music. The $5 CD Baby sale had me ordering her other CD, Dream in Red which is also really good.
I guess her style would be AAA (Adult Album Alternative). But she has hints of Americana, folk and blues as well.
Her voice is crystal clear, gutsy and strong and sounds great singing this genre. I can only imagine what she sounds like live and I’d love to be there in person.
The songs are intricate with lots going on between the lead vocals, instrumentation and back up vocals. Lots of new things to hear with each listen. This is no simple “girl-and-guitar” CD. Along with guitar, I hear piano, string, drums, bass, banjo, and more. This is a Class A recording. Go get your copy now!
Stand Out songs: No One Can, Red and To the Ground.
