Album Name: Real
Artist: Nicola
Year/Label: 2002 / Independent
Review by Anna Maria Stjärnell
Nicola is certainly real, she has a fabulous voice and a minimal, but rockin’ sound. This debut can barely contain the fire that emanates from Nicola and her two-man band. Vocally there’s few who could hold a candle to Nicola, she is a truly fearless singer.
The title track is slow, but intense. It holds echoes of Melissa Etheridge at her best.
“Think Twice” is a bluesy number that sounds terrific. Nicola scat-sings a little to great effect.
“Give Me that Something” is a very sexy song that has Nicola displaying all her vocal prowess while singing of somebody with “bedroom eyes”. She takes a detour into Spanish which is very suggestive.
“Real” is a very nice record that should please fans of bluesy rock.
