Review by Amy Lotsberg Producer of Collected Sounds
This is Lisa’s second CD and was released in 2001.
It doesn’t get much more lo-fi than this. The only sounds here are guitar, a little percussion and Lisa’s clear voice. No fancy-shmancy extra sounds here. The liner notes say that this CD was recorded in a living room, “The goal was to capture the energy and spontonaity (sic) of live performance with all its imperfections.” (I thought it was cute that “spontaneity” was incorrectly spelled 🙂 )
Anyway…imperfections are not exactly apparent in the music, but the live feeling is. The genre is folk, girl and guitar. Lisa has a nice full voice. She tends to use the same (or very similar) rhythm (DA-di-di-DA-dum-dum-dum) for most of the songs, which makes them a little difficult to distinguish from one another until repeated listens. If she would branch out with rhythm more I think I’d like this better. But then again this is an older CD, maybe she’ll put something new out soon.
“Eternal Holiday” is an exception. The guitar picking is very nice and that combined with her voice and great lyrics makes this one stand out from the others.
If you like your female folk real stripped down with no extra bells and whistles, this one is for you.
