Review by Amy Lotsberg Producer of Collected Sounds
This is one of those CDs that I put in the player and immediately know it’s one I’m going to be listening to for a long time. I only receive a few of these gems a year and I’m happy to say that this year has been fabulous as I’ve already gotten maybe 6 like it and it’s only June. This is going to be a very hard year for me to come up with a top ten (without going over ten, I mean).
Anyway…Jodi Shaw’s CD is a lovely mixture of folk/pop, intelligent lyrics and a fabulous soothing voice. She is reminiscent of Suzanne Vega, especially on “The President Knows” and of Dar Williams on “The End”. But Shaw really is unique. I love that her songs all have a bit of a different feel. They don’t all sound alike, yet she’s distinctive in that they all sound like her.
I’d mention my favorite songs but that would be all of them. Honestly, there is not a dud on this. But OK, stands outs for me are “The Forger”, “Cabrini-Green” and “High”.
She also does a version of 80s song “Only You” previously recorded by the one-hit wonder band, Yazoo (I know…who?) Maybe they had other hits but this is the only one I know of and Jodi’s version breathes new life into it (…and I liked it before!).
“Pie Love Sky” is a great recording that draws you in and won’t let go even after the last song has ended. You’ll hit repeat over and over again.
