Review by Amy Lotsberg Producer of Collected Sounds
Though Hannah Fury has released several EPs and composed film scores, “The Thing That Feels” is her first full-length recording and it’s a thing of beauty.
Richly layered piano, orchestral music along with Hannah’s soft beautiful voice make this a great listen. Hannah Fury has a gift for making these songs have a gorgeous and unearthly quality. Several songs have a death theme, but they usually end hopeful, if not at least, accepting of fate. Dark and beautiful.
Her songs are sometimes inspired by popular culture, tipping her hat to films, comic book characters, books, and yes, love.
“And Your Little Dog Too” is a lovely song about…well, just what you would think…
“Surrender Dorothy …
Bring me the shoes, dear …
Bring them to me”
And no album of this style would be complete without a song about vampires.
“Taking my breath and fearlessly setting me free …
Oh, I feel it being drawn out …
The blood flowing steadily into your mouth …
This dark night, cruel and cold …
You whisper softly, “Honey, you’ll never grow old” …:
(The Vampire Waltz)
“Away” is a beautifully haunting piece about a man drowning in a river. The lyrics include:
“Angels sing Glory Hallelujah …
But he will bring his voice to heaven and blow them all away …”
I can’t help but think she is referring to the late fabulous Jeff Buckley. If she’s not and I just had a moment to think about him anyway I thank her for that.
If you like exquisite, piano music ala Sarah Fimm, and death ballads (ala Nick Cave) you will love Hannah Fury.
