Review by Amy Lotsberg Producer of Collected Sounds
Now I’m not a fan of country, and this recording is straying into that category, but I still think it’s pretty good. There are other influences here as well, blues, folk, etc.
Some of these songs make me want to do a two step (I don’t even know if that is the right kind for dance for this type of music, but it makes me want to jump around and go, “yee-haw!)
I will say that Joni’s voice is nice. It does not have that annoying drawl that most country music does. You know, how everyone sounds like Jim Neighbors/Gomer Pyle? It’s not here. Thank goodness. Her voice is very pleasing; it’s clear and strong. She doesn’t do a lot of fancy stuff, but that’s OK.
OK you know how I said this is “straying” into country? Well, it’s pretty much there, with both feet. But there’s also a little blues going on here (as on “Sneak Up”).
If you like old style country music (when it was good, before those Rebas and Tobys took over) then give Joni Laurence a spin.

Comment: I heard Joni live in Champaign, and had to have the CD. This is great CD for anyone looking for a little country, a little soul, and a little blues. Joni has a style all her own, so it’s hard to pin down. Listen for yourself and decide where to put her! My favorite song of hers is “Bowl of Raisin Bran.”

Comment: I loved this CD. The balance was great. I especially like that both Joni’s voice and music are strong, clear, and beautiful. The lyrics also pleased me with their emphasis on the simple and universal truths we tend to encounter in our lives. I’m so glad I bought this.
