Secretary of the Arts

I try not to get terribly politicky on this site, (tho’ sometimes I can’t help it!) but this email appeared in my inbox today and I thought it was important enough to pass along. It makes sense no matter what your affiliation. It was forwarded to me but originated with someone named Marisa.

Subject: Petition to Obama for a Secretary of the Arts

My dear Artist-friends:
You may already have received this, but it’s so important, I’m passing it along. I’m addressing this to you because, like me, you’re an artist, and the arts are deeply important to you. In the list of email addresses above, there are poets, fiction writers, playwrights, photographers, painters, film-makers, theater teachers, actors, dancers, and (literally) dozens of musicians.

Quincy Jones has started a petition to ask President-Elect Obama to appoint a Secretary of the Arts. While many other countries have had Ministers of Art or Culture for centuries, the United States has never created such a position. We in the arts need this, and the country needs the arts — now more than ever. Art changes lives, and art saves lives! The arts have the power to change our society for the better.

Please take a moment to sign this important petition and then pass it on to your friends and colleagues.

Thanks, and happy new year! 11 days until Obama takes office, but who’s counting…
