Review by Anna Maria Stjärnell

Tina Root was one half of darkwave duo Switchblade Symphony. Her new project starts with an album of covers. The darkwave touches are still intact as are Root’s sweet vocals.

She starts with the expected version of a Depeche Mode song and then the unexpected version of Norah Jones “Come Away with me”. It’s a dissonant take on the song.

Coldplay’s “Yellow” nestles next to Duran Duran’s “The Chauffeur” which is currently in vogue. Sleepthief and Italian band LoveCrave have both covered it recently. Root’s delivery of the songs is special and her tone is her own.

The version of Frida from Abba’s “I Know There’s Something Going On” is dense and robotic.

She revisits her previous band’s song “Bad Trash” nicely too.

“A Strange Gathering” is a good covers album but I hope we’ll hear more of Root’s own songs soon.
