Review by Anna Maria Stjärnell

Jennifer Grassman’s debut takes its title and inspiration from a fantasy novel by George MacDonald.

Her evocative songs and piano playing are at the center of the album.

“Truth is fulfilling” is a strong song, Grassman’s lovely voice at its best. A slight Tori Amos influence can be felt.

“Time” is lush and sweeping, Grassman managing to harmonize with herself nicely.

“Pretty Girls” is haunting and plaintive; Grassman singing of a great sadness. The song rises to a dramatic pitch and becomes all the better for it.

“Mourning Star” is another highlight, Grassman making a classic piano-led ballad, with intriguing lyrics.

This album’s a strong debut.
