Artist: Valerie Ising
Year/Label: 2000 / Ocean Door Records
Review by Amy Lotsberg Producer of Collected Sounds
My first impression of this recording is that I wanted her to blow her nose. Valerie Ising’s voice has a very nasal quality to it. But at the same time, it also sounds like her sound is coming out of her throat. She also tends to swoop (ala Bob Dylan, who’s voice I can’t stand). So this was a little hard for me to get into. That is not to say that she is not talented, she co-wrote all the songs on the CD and I’m sure plenty of people enjoy her type of sound. In fact she’s been compared to Barbra Streisand and Maria Carey.
However, the music is interesting. Piano driven mostly, with drum-machine type beats.
Her lyrics are solid and heartfelt.
If this sounds like your thing, give her a listen.
