Album Name: Divine Healer
Artist: Angel Corpus Christi
Year/Label: 2003 / Independent
Review by Anna Maria Stjärnell
Angel Corpus Christi has been releasing records for a long time. Her music has earned her cult status. She plays the accordion and sings in a slightly flat manner, not unlike Liz Phair.
“Divine Healer” is originals and covers done in a very pleasing way.
“You” has Dean Wareham from Luna on guitar. Angel’s voice is tender as she sings of doing heroin with her beloved. Takes all sorts I guess.
“Rock and Roll Shoes” is a charming, quirky song. Angel’s accordion is put to good use here.
“Pull Girl” is a new wavey song with plenty of bite.
“I’ll Say Goodbye” is a bittersweet breakup song. Angel’s unique style prevents her from making this into a cliché.
Her stylish takes on “Eve of Destruction” and Donovan’s “Hurdy Gurdy Man” round this record off nicely.
“Divine Healer” is a fun, spirited pop record.
