Album Review: Foreign Affairs by Laurie Antonioli

Album Name: Foreign Affairs
Artist: Laurie Antonioli
Year/Label: 2005 / Nable Records

Review by Anna Maria Stjärnell

Jazz singer Laurie Antonioli offers a relaxed, yet intense blend of her own and others songs on this record. She’s aided by bassist Nenad Vasilic and other musicians.

“Holy Water” displays a longing for tranquility that’s underscored by her yearning vocal.

“Where Flamingos Fly” works the traditional “Black is the Color” into an intricate pattern of complex rhythms.

“I Know You” is a sweet little love song sung with great empathy and playfulness. With just Antonioli’s voice and Vasilic’s bass it’s bare but compelling.

Keith Jarrett’s “The cure” gets an inspired reading. A very nice record.
