Album Name: Soho Vamp
Artist: Soho Vamp
Year/Label: 2006 / Independent
Review by Anna Maria Stjärnell
The La-based trio Soho Vamp are clearly nostalgic about the glam rock era. Singer/guitarist Tom Mesmer has a neat way of penning his songs.
“Diamondback Cadillac” opens the record with a confident bang, all glam stylings in place.
“Equalizer” features a nicely Bowie-esque vocal and a stirring chorus.
“Fabulous Jack” echoes classic T Rex ballads like “Cosmic Dancer” and adds a dollop of Bryan Ferry’s mannered vocals on early Roxy Music records.
“Growler” sounds like the Strokes if they’d been more into glam. Mesmer’s vocal is right on the money and the trio play like a much bigger band.
“Tophat Tomcat” apes “Hang on to Yourself” a little but is still its own song.
It’s a very nice debut this.
