Review by Amy Lotsberg Producer of Collected Sounds
Olivea Watson is, um, very colorful. I am not sure what exactly she is going for, but what I think of when I look at her album cover is ‘street clown’. Maybe that’s the intent. But it does not match the music in my opinion.
The music is sort of pop, light rock. The songs are melodic and catchy, piano driven, cabaret almost. Pretty cool.
Her voice is kind of cute and matches the music well.
Goodbye is really catchy, radio friendly.
Dirty Noise is pretty bluesy, and shows a bit of a different side to her voice. I don’t normally enjoy blues, but this song is good.
Allow me a Grammar Police Moment: It bothers me that she says “All’s I want to do” All’s is not a word and it just sounds lazy. In contraction the apostrophe is there to show there is a letter or two missing from a word that belongs after the first word. But there is not word that would fit there. “All is”? ‘All is I want to do’ makes no sense. Maybe a minor thing to most, but that sort of thing drives me batty and can ruin a song for me. *
In all the album is pretty good. I obviously have some minor issues with it, but for the most part I like it. I like her voice, she’s a good songwriter but to be on my favorites list there is something missing. I am not sure what it is. Maybe it just doesn’t speak to me like some others do. But I think many of you will like it.
*Witness: Jonatha Brooke (whom I love) on her cover of “Eye in the Sky”: she sings “I can read YER mind” and each time I listen to it I have to either out-sing her so I can’t hear it or I have to skip the song. There are other examples, but I’ll spare you in the case that you start to notice these too and it drives us all crazy.
