Tuesday, February 7, 2012- Iowa City, IA – The seventh annual Mission Creek Festival returns March 27-April 1, 2012. Mission Creek Festival is a weeklong experience that takes over the venues and spaces of downtown Iowa City–creating an easily navigated nexus of music, literature, food and art. As with past festivals, the upcoming event will feature a strong balance of national, international and regional musicians, writers and artists performing and exhibiting their work in downtown venues like the Englert Theatre, the Mill, Blue Moose Tap House, Public Space One, Java House, Gabe’s, the Yacht Club, Prairie Lights and many other traditional and non-traditional venues. As always, writers, small presses, and literary journals from across the country will appear alongside musical acts such as The Magnetic Fields, Sharon Van Etten, The War on Drugs, Bowerbirds, Seun Kuti & Egypt 80, Black Milk, Tim Hecker, William Elliott Whitmore, and many more. In addition, Mission Creek is hosting an artist-in-residency program this year during which Dirty Beaches and Wet Hair will be recording a 7″ and also during which Erase Errata will be cutting their next album in Iowa City.
The event is not just a series of concerts, readings and shows: it is a happening — a gathering that brings together artists and culture-lovers in the cozy, intimate confines of Iowa City. Every venue is within five minutes of every other venue. The largest venues rarely hold more than 750 people and sometimes the smallest hold just 50 people. Whether it’s warm or cool outside, Iowa City remains a great walking town: in between events, go eat at the diner where presidential candidates vie for the ears of caucus voters or grab a beer where folks like Raymond Carver and Kurt Vonnegut used to hang out. And then head back out to another show. Whatever you do, have a great time.

Six Shooter Records is proud to present the inaugural Sleepwalk Guitar Festival, an education and celebration of all things guitar. Curated by Luke Doucet, Sleepwalk Guitar Festival brings together trailblazers and standard-bearers of excellence from across genres and across North America. Sleepwalk’s namesake is the instantly familiar (and Billboard chart topper) instrumental composed by Santo and Johnny Farina. See the original and still definitive version performed by the brothers [here].
This year, Sleepwalk Guitar Festival welcomes Afie Jurvanen, Amos Garrett, Andrew Dickson, Brent Mason, Christine Bougie, Colin James, Danny Michel, Duke Robillard, Gordon Lewis, Grant Siemens, Ian Blurton, J Mascis, James Robertson, Jay Nowicki, Kurt Swinghammer, Luke Doucet & The White Falcon, Melissa McClelland, Redd Volkaert, Richard Lloyd Trio and The Sadies, with more to come. Sleepwalk Guitar Festival will include full concerts, workshops, clinics and interviews.
Sleepwalk will present an Emerging Guitarist Award to a young musician who demonstrates innovation, artistry and technique. The prize will be $1000, awarded based on the submission of a youtube performance video via the Sleepwalk Facebook http://facebook.com/sleepwalkguitar. The contest is open to anyone under 19 years old. Entrants need not submit an original piece of music – an original interpretation is also acceptable.
Luke Doucet is a renowned guitarist who has evolved from sideman to leading slinger. Recognized as one of Canada’s premiere guitarists, Doucet’s reputation has brought praise from both fellow musicians and critics worldwide: “Whenever and wherever Luke Doucet hits the stage, he wrestles every last ounce of Neil Young-battles-Brian Setzer twang out of his gleaming cream-and-gold companion” (Guitar Player Magazine).
Sleepwalk Guitar Festival will be held at Toronto’s Great Hall from November 4-6, 2011. For schedule, performer and ticketing details, please visit [www.sleepwalkguitar.com.].
Tickets are available at [www.sixshooterrecords.com.].

I just heard these guys and I really like them! I wonder where I’ve been, as this is their 4th album.
Here’s the PR:
Since the 2007 release of Welcome to the Night Sky, which earned the band both a Juno Award and a MuchMusic Video Award, Wintersleep has performed hundreds of shows including sold-out headlining dates, an opening slot for Sir Paul McCartney in Canada, a US tour with Wolf Parade and a three month long European tour with Editors and have just embarked on a US tour with The Hold Steady. As a result, the songs on their newest offering New Inheritors were essentially born on the road, showcasing the band’s range, scope and sophistication. Now the band is happy to announce an extensive Canadian tour to take place immediately following their US dates with The Hold Steady
They’re offering a free MP3 of their song, [from the album New Inheritors]on their website
here’s the tracklist:
1. Experience the Jewel
2. Encyclopedia
3. Blood Collection
4. New Inheritors
5. Black Camera

Of course it’s one of those dealios where you enter your email and they send you an email with the download link. HOwever, these work for me about 10% of the time. I never get the download email, but I always get added to the mailing list! Not the artists’ fault, but that’s a stupid app.

The Hangout Beach Music and Arts Festival (May 14th – 16th) has teamed up with New Orleans concert promoter Stephen Rehage to create a two-city benefit event. All proceeds from the Concert for the Coast events in Gulf Shores, Ala and New Orleans, La will be donated to regional charities.
Gulf Shores, AL (PRWEB) May 11, 2010 — In light of the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill affecting the Gulf Coast, the Hangout Beach Music and Arts Festival (May 14th – 16th) will be donating all profits to regional coastal cleanup and preservation. In an effort to expand awareness and increase donations, The Hangout, along with New Orleans producer Stephen Rehage, will expand the Concert For The Coast to New Orleans. This two-city concert experience features The Hangout Music Festival in Gulf Shores, Alabama and a one-day concert event on Sunday, May 16th in downtown New Orleans. New Orleans Jazz pioneers Preservation Hall Jazz Band will be on hand at both events.
Hangout Beach Music and Arts Festival May 14th – 16th in Gulf Shores, AL. Presently, the stages are being constructed upon pristine beach, but the oil slick in the gulf threatens to endanger the wildlife habitats and livelihoods of those that live in the region. “The Gulf Coast is what makes the Hangout Music Festival so unique,” says Shaul Zislin, co-creator of the Hangout Music Festival. “It is one of the most pristine coastlines in all of America, and we will donate every penny above our costs to keep it clean.”
Stephen Rehage, producer of the Voodoo Music Experience and Essence Festival is working with the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation and Louisiana Film Office to produce the Hangout Concert for the Coast New Orleans benefit event on Sunday, May 16th. WWOZ New Orleans Public Radio will broadcast live from both events.
The Hangout Festival is expanding its three-pronged effort aimed at Gulf Coast recovery by organizing clean-up volunteers, raising public awareness, and fundraising for the families, businesses and habitats that have been affected by this catastrophe.
Leading the The Hangout?s mission for Gulf Coast awareness is national nonpartisan organization HeadCount. Festival attendees are encouraged to visit the HeadCount booth at The Hangout Concert for the Coast Gulf Shores to write their local senators and congressmen and to bring donations and supplies for Gulf Coast relief. HeadCount will host a panel with leading environmental activists and musicians on Sunday, May 16th. More information can be found in the About section at www.hangoutmusicfest.com, as well as on the Hangout Beach Music & Arts Festival’s [Facebook page].

]]>After 30 years together and a slew of chart-topping songs that defined an
era, the Go-Go’s announce Happily Ever After – The Farewell Tour. Happily
Ever After kicks off July 7, 2010 at Lilith Fair in San Diego, wraps up
July 27 in Austin, and will include a live television performance on Good
Morning America, July 16 in New York City.
In 1981, the Go-Go’s delivered Beauty And The Beat hot on the heels of
their debut U.S. single “Our Lips Are Sealed.” The album garnered
double-platinum status, reaching number one and becoming the first to top
the Billboard charts by an all-female band that wrote and performed their
own songs. 1982’s Vacation and 1984’s Talk Show continued their chart and
radio successes and cemented the Go-Go’s as one of the most iconic and
beloved groups of the 80s. The Go-Go’s released a much-celebrated
anthology, Return to the Valley of The Go-Go’s in 1994, and 2001 marked
the last studio album of new material, God Bless The Go-Go’s
Their story truly is a punk version of the American Dream. They came, they
saw and they conquered the charts and airwaves with their kicky kitsch and
sparkling California appeal. Their smash hits, such as “We Got the Beat,”
“Vacation,” “Head Over Heels,” and the aforementioned “Our Lips Are
Sealed,” along with countless magazine covers, television performances,
and high-profile concert tours, turned Belinda Carlisle, Jane Wiedlin,
Charlotte Caffey, Gina Schock and Kathy Valentine into certified rock
stars, and five feisty role models for generations of ready-to-rock girls.
From their halcyon days as America’s sweethearts to their current status
as superstars who pioneered a genre, the Go-Go’s preside over an amazing
three-decade reign as high priestesses of pop.
Today, with the original lineup intact, the Go-Go’s live show continues to
deliver every bit of the raw energy of their now-legendary punk
beginnings, tempered with the wisdom of three decades of pop perfection.
Don’t miss them on this farewell tour as they celebrate with, and say
goodbye to, their devoted fans, before the Go-Go’s head into the happily
ever after.

INGRID MICHAELSON AND MAT KEARNEY ANNOUNCE CO-HEADLINE TOUR
Critically acclaimed singer/songwriters Mat Kearney and Ingrid Michaelson will team up to co-headline one of the most anticipated tours of 2010.
Ingrid Michaelson took the industry by storm in 2007 with her debut album Girls and Boys, featuring the ubiquitous hit, The Way I Am, a single that has gone on to sell over a million copies worldwide. Her latest critically lauded release, Everybody, led by the infectious first single Maybe, shot to #1 on the iTunes sales chart when it was released.
Remaining true to her indie roots, Michaelson’s music is released on the label she founded, Cabin 24 Records, which has sold over 500,000 albums and over 1.5 million singles to date.
Michaelson was the first unsigned musician ever selected as a VH1 You Oughta Know Artist and has appeared on Good Morning America, Live with Regis & Kelly, The Ellen Degeneres Show, Late Night With Conan O’Brien and The Tonight Show With Jay Leno.
After spending five years traveling the country establishing himself as a new artist supporting his first release, Nothing Left To Lose, Mat Kearney dug his roots into his new hometown of Nashville, TN, and cultivated the tracks for City of Black & White, released in May 2009 on Aware/Columbia Records. He opened up the writing process to friends and to the community of musicians in Nashville, and crafted hit songs such as Closer To Love, Here We Go , and Lifeline.

]]>The post Sarah McLachlan To Co-Headline Ships And Dip V first appeared on Collected Sounds.
]]>Sarah McLachlan will be co-headlining Ships and Dip V, the third annual music cruise hosted by headliners Barenaked Ladies, featuring Great Big Sea, The Weakerthans, Gaelic Storm, Sloan and more than a dozen other artists and comedians. The cruise will set sail from Miami, FL on February 1, 2009, on the Norwegian Jewel, with stops in Cozumel, Mexico and Norwegian Cruise Line’s private island Great Stirrup Cay, returning on February 6, 2009.
It’s not very often you get the opportunity to see this legendary singer/ songwriter perform solo in an intimate venue, seating around 800. While on the cruise, you’ll also have the opportunity to get up-close and personal with more artists while enjoying all night jam sessions, headline performances, acoustic sets and impromptu performances all over the ship. In addition to all that musical talent, you’ll laugh out loud to Dave Foley and Kevin McDonald from the comedy troupe The Kids in the Hall. If you’re STILL looking for things to do on this action packed cruise, there are plenty of wild and wacky theme nights like the 1988 Prom Formal Night, and the annual naked photo on the deck. You never know what’s going to happen on this cruise!
Cabins start at $849 per person

Hey y’all I just wanted to pass on some more info about the Hotel Cafe Tour. I’m going (and excited to find out who the very special guest in my city is).
Here’s the skinny…
ONE BUS, ONE BAND AND A BUNCH OF GIRLFRIENDS ON THE ROAD, THE HOTEL CAFÉ TOUR ANNOUNCES ITS FIRST ALL FEMALE LINE-UP
FALL TOUR STARTS ON OCTOBER 9
Over the past four years, The Hotel Café Tour has established itself as the premier tour for both up-and-coming and established singer-songwriters. This fall, the Tour will feature an all female line-up for the first time. Nineteen female songwriters, ranging from established musicians Ingrid Michaelson (October 16-27) and Rachael Yamagata to hot rising stars, Meiko, Thao Nguyen, Priscilla Ahn, Brooke Fraser and many more, will pile into a bus and head out on a 34 city tour. One bus, one band, and a bunch of girlfriends on the road.
Named for the increasingly influential coffee shop-turned-venue in LA, The Hotel Café Tour was created to share the community vibe and the stellar songwriters that grew The Hotel Café scene into “the place that breaks artists”. Community and camaraderie are the focus, there are no headliners, the band is shared and spontaneous collaborations between artists are encouraged. With a revolving cast of songwriters jumping on and off the bus, each evening is unique, creating a feeling of “these people in this place will never happen again.”
Over the past four years, the Tour has hit every major market in the United States and Europe and many of the participating songwriters have grown from emerging artists into household names. The Spring 2008 tour sold out, with Sara Bareilles, Cary Brothers, Ingrid Michaelson and Joshua Radin playing to over 30,000 people. With the success of past The Hotel Café Tours, each Tour becomes more anticipated and the slots more coveted.
The Fall Tour will showcase some of the best female songwriters performing today: Rachael Yamagata, Ingrid Michaelson, Meiko, Priscilla Ahn, Kate Havnevik, Thao Nguyen, Brooke Fraser, Samantha Crain, Alice Russell, Jaymay, Erin McCarley, Katie Herzig, Jenny Owen Youngs, Lenka, Emily Wells, Anya Marina, Holly Conlan, and Catherine Feeny. Diverse in their presentation and point of view, they have their passion for lyrics, vocals and the importance of the communal spirit in common. Many have recently released albums but have taken time out of a more traditional individual tour for the opportunity to be a part of this special collaboration.
In line with the Tour’s commitment to community, The Hotel Café Tour will be donating money and raising consciousness for UNFPA and Amnesty International’s Stop Violence Against Women Campaign. Motorola, Myspace, Starbucks and Taylor Guitars have signed on as partners for the Fall Tour.
Pre-sale tickets for The Hotel Café Tour are available starting Tuesday, August 19 at www.thehotelcafetour.com with regular ticket sales beginning on August 26. The dates are as follows, [check the website] for the line-up of each show.

[Here’s the review of Apron Strings]
It’s 1983 and time for
“THE NEXT BIG THING”
World Premiere Musical Rocks Art/Works Theatre in Los Angeles starting July 19.
A world premiere garage rock musical with music and lyrics by members of indie band Breech (indie-music.com’s Top 25 CDs of 2007 for “Tarnish and Undress” and winner of the 2003 DIY Album of the Year with its release, “Apron Strings”) is set to rock Hollywood this summer. THE NEXT BIG THING, with book by Jeff Favre and music and lyrics by Breech’s Missy Gibson and Mike Flanagan, opens on Saturday, July 19 and continues through August 16 at art/works Theatre on Santa Monica Boulevard.
It’s 1983, and Chip and his budding garage band are looking for the new sound that will take them to the next level – much to the dismay of Chip’s mom, Melissa – a singer-songwriter from the ’60s with a checkered past and a belief that good music is more than a simple hook.
“When Jeff first approached me, it was just to write the music,” laughed Gibson, who also plays the role of Melissa. “As I was reading the script, I recognized some of the dialogue and incidents. That’s when he said, ‘Oh, yeah, I kind of based the character on you – I hope you’re okay with that.'”
“I’ve always loved the ’80s and never understood why there are no musicals about that period that really click,” said Favre. “I’m a writer – and I knew that if I could collaborate with professional songwriters who could tell a good story with their songs, we’d be on to something. Then, an incident in Missy’s life sparked an idea for that story – and here we are.”
THE NEXT BIG THING is unique in that it blends two distinct musical styles to tell its story. The songs performed by Chip’s band are straight 80s retro pop dominated by the DX7 – the first commercially successful digital synthesizer that was so ubiquitous in the music of that era. The rest of the songs reflect the versatility of Gibson and Flanagan’s writing that is only hinted at in the edgy sound of their acclaimed band, Breech.
Favre co-directs with Rachel Maize, and musical direction is by Breech’s Mike Flanagan. In addition to Gibson (who as an actress studied with Uta Hagen and as a musician was dubbed “the best independent singer/songwriter in the country” by her native Detroit Metro Times), the cast features Brandon Ruckdashel (“Riley” in the popular cable series The Lair, Off-Broadway’s Ascension – “Brandon Ruckdashel makes a stunning debut” – New York Times) as the 18-year old Chip, and Matisha Baldwin (Ovation Award-winning production of Dreamgirls, NAACP Award-winning The All Night Strut); Jason Director (Atlantic Theatre Co.’s An Adult Evening of Shel Silverstein) and Michael Thompson (A Noise Within’s Romeo and Juliet ) as Chip’s aspiring band-mates.
Also in the cast are Heather Belling, Curt Bonnem (The Beastly Bombing) and Ellen D. Williams (title role in Garage Theatre’s The Book of Liz). KROQ’s Lisa May of the Kevin and Bean Show makes a cameo appearance on Friday nights.
Jeff Favre’s comedy, Cubicle, premiered at Downtown L.A.’s Theatre Expresso. He headlines and hosts the annual Jath Live at The Lounge Theatre in Los Angeles, which he also produced and performed at several venues in Chicago and New York – an outgrowth of jath.com, the longest running comedy video show on the web, which he has hosted for ten years. He also directed Rachel Arieff’s kooky, underground one-woman cabaret show, How to be Happy All the Time at the Hollywood Ramada Inn. Jeff writes for Back Stage West, the Daily Breeze, the Downtown News, and has a weekly entertainment column in the Ventura County Star.
Breech embodies the musical vision of Missy Gibson and Mike Flanagan. Born and raised in Detroit, Gibson moved to L.A. in 1996 and released two independent CDs with Breech, in 1999 and 2000. In 2002, with Flanagan on board, Breech released its first full-length CD, “Apron Strings”, which won the 2003 DIY Album of the Year. Last year, the Breech CD “Tarnish and Undress” was picked by indie-music.com as one of the Top 25 CDs of 2007 (“Led by vocalist Missy Gibson, who stops you in your tracks and makes you pay attention to her every word, this is an album sure to be treasured by all who discover it”), and has recently been receiving airplay on KCRW. Several of Breech’s songs have also appeared in film and on TV. Prior to meeting Gibson, Breech guitarist/songwriter Flanagan performed and wrote with L.A./Oakland-based band Giant Ant Farm as well as fronting alt-rock band Willoughby, where his songs appeared in Buffy the Vampire Slayer as well in several independent films. He’s currently also performing and writing with The Lisa Marr Experiment, which in 2003 released “American Jitters”, their sophomore release on Sympathy for the Record Industry. A native Angelino, Flanagan has received many accolades for his multi-instrumentalist and songwriting abilities. “Flanagan is a striking talent… an impressive songwriter… a commanding vocalist… (with) Elvis Costello’s tunefulness and full-bore passion…” wrote the Los Angeles Times. Breech has toured the country extensively, both on their own and opening for many national acts, including Weezer, the late Jeff Buckley, White Stripes and Liz Phair.
Audience members will have the chance to see Breech perform live following performances of The Next Big Thing on July 25 and August 15. On July 19 and August 1, 8 and 16, everyone is invited to stay after the show for karaoke with the cast.
Set design for THE NEXT BIG THING is by Davis Campbell; costume design is by Sharell Martin; lighting design is by Matt Richter; props are by Noelle Leiblic; dramaturg is Gina Egger; production stage manager is Angie Estevez; and Racquel Lehrman/Theatre Planners produces for Jath.com Productions.
Performances of THE NEXT BIG THING take place Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 pm, July 19 through August 16. There will be one matinee on Sunday, July 20 at 3 pm. GIRLâ€
S NIGHT OUT AT THE BITTER END!
WEDNESDAY, MAY 21st, 2008
Wednesday, May 21st marks the first in a series of NJ Songwriters in the Round showcases to focus solely on female songwriters. It’s GIRLS NIGHT OUT and these girls are headed for the legendary Bitter End on Bleecker Street in NYC. The Jersey based organization is loading 5 talented female singer/songwriters, a few guitars and a bunch of fans into a bus and crossing the river for this debut event. And what better way to make a splash than in front of a TV audience. On The Beat (Time-Warner) is NY1’s entertainment program and they will be on location to capture the fun. The feature will air on-demand in all 5 boroughs in June.
Performing on May 21st will be ASCAP songwriters Jaclyn Brown, Carrie Cheron, Lisa Coppola, Eryn Shewell and the show’s director, Deb Ferrara. Showtime is 7:15 and in keeping with the show’s tradition, there is no cover charge.
Tom DeSavia, Senior Vice President of Rock/Pop, ASCAP said: “ASCAP is proud to be a supporter of the NJ Songwriters Girls Night Out event. They continue to not only provide singer/songwriters an outlet to perform, but bring together these creators in a sense of true musical community.”
Now in it’s 6th year, NJ Songwriters in the Round is an original music showcase series founded by NJ songwriter/producer Deb Ferrara. The regular monthly event takes place every 3rd Tuesday at Maxwell’s in Hoboken and is sponsored by ASCAP, BMI, Rainmaker Public Relation & Artists Development and GoGirls Music. In addition to featuring the most promising up-and-coming songwriters from across the country and beyond, the organization regularly presents educational and networking events as well as charity concerts and auctions. Twice yearly, GIRLS NIGHT OUT will take the show to different locations in the tri-state area for a night of Girl Power. Deb organized NJ Songwriters in the Round because she felt there wasn’t much support for original music beyond open mic nights. The goal was to provide an outlet for serious songwriters, and to that end she fills the show’s precious slots using her discriminating ears. Said Ferrara, “New Jersey has an incredibly rich music history. The next Paul Simon or Bruce Springsteen could be on our stage and we urge the music community: fans, industry, press, and colleagues to check it out.”

Sklyer is a
four year old child recently diagnosed with brain stem cancer called Diffuse Pontine Glioma. Recently, his parents decided to turn to alternative medicine to relieve the swelling in Skyler’s brain. Within a few days of receiving treatment, he’s been able to start to
move parts of his body again and is smiling and out of pain. His parents need help to continue to pursue this treatment because it is not covered by insurance.
Beth recently recorded 4 beautiful lullabies for Skyler, which she will send anyone who donates $50.00 or more. If you decide to send money, please note (benefit CD) on the check so that you will receive the CD. Please also note if you’d like mp3 versions sent to your e-mail account instead; this saves money, trees, etc.
A fund has been set up for Skyler and donations can be made to:
“Friends of Skyler Smith”

P.O. Box 6465
Albany, CA 94706
You can see Skyler’s progress and send him a message of hope [here]
UPDATE: Beth sent me a photo of this cutie…
