HOUSTON, TX – Some people go for cake. Others prefer speeches and formal dinners.
Madalyn Sklar decided to celebrate the tenth anniversary of gogirlsmusic.com, an online community she founded to connect with other women musicians in 1996, in a much more hands-on way—and her friends joined her.
Sklar is the creator of the GoGirlsMusicFest, Invasion of the GoGirls @ SXSW, Battle of the GoGirls and more. In the last 6 years, she has spearheaded over 100 benefit showcases for various organizations including the Rock ‘n’ Roll Camp for Girls, MusiCares, American Liver Foundation, Nicole Brown Charitable Foundation and many more.
She also recently launched GoGirlsMusic Records, an independent digital music content provider, distributor and record label. The label works closely with indie artists to get ‘great “women in music”’ heard without the artist giving up ownership or paying big bucks.
Add the 8,500 fans on her MySpace page, and it’s obvious Sklar could have a huge party in an arena with about 12,000 of her closest friends. Instead, she came up with yet another innovative idea, and took partying (and brand awareness) to an entirely new level.
In February, Sklar had the GoGirlsMusic logo tattooed on her ankle while in Austin, TX for Folk Alliance.
“I figured getting some ink was a pretty unique way to celebrate, said Sklar, who is considered one of the premier consultants and educators in the indie music market. “We’ve built our reputation by doing the unexpected, so why not?
What followed is destined to become the stuff of indie music legend: her friend and fellow GoGirls member Leslie Starnes of Austin-based Bon Terra got the tattoo; then her partner Georgia; then GoGirl Melissa Mullins.
One night. Four tattoos. A record that will stand for quite some time, and a hell of a story for the Rolling Stone interview someday. Leslie and Melissa scored lifetime memberships, an offer that Sklar extended to all GoGirls members. Today, just six months later, 10 women are sporting GoGirls tattoos and she fully expects to see more at each subsequent GoGirlsMusic event.
That’s way cooler (and longer lasting) than cake.
