Review by Amy Lotsberg Producer of Collected Sounds

I love this little EP. The only downfall is it’s too short. I know I’ve said that before, and I completely understand the need to create an EP before a record. So let’s just say I’m anxious for the full length and I certainly hope one will be forthcoming.

Amy Kuney has quite a mature voice for her young age (she’s 20 at the time of this writing). There’s a little Fiona Apple edge with a little Nellie McKay snappiness but there’s also a lot of originality.

“Sore Loser” is a lovely song with a great jazzy melody and fun rhythms. It’s great fun to sing along to.

“How the Wind Must Feel” has one little part that sounds like Everything But the Girl to me.

“Breaking Bad Habits” has one of the greatest refrains I’ve heard in a long time:

“I’m just breaking bad habits
You’re the first one to go”

There seems to be an underlying (or not so underlying) yearning to be famous in her songs. Sounds like she wants it, but is scared of it at the same time.

The songs are very well written, if a little mainstreamy at times. There’s nothing wrong with that, but if you’re looking for something really left of the dial, this isn’t it. If you just like well written pop songs, this IS it.

An amusing note: I just read on her website that her song “So Help Me God” is featured on the soap opera “Passions” in February 2006. Indeed, so help me god, I love that show. It’s so bad it’s delicious.
