Album Name: Fabulous
Artist: Jamila Ford
Year/Label: 2003 / Skinny Chick Records
Review by Amy Lotsberg Producer of Collected Sounds
First of all, I need to explain, that the sort of music on this recording is not my favorite genre. I don’t know why, perhaps I have no soul. But that being said, I can tell that Jamila Ford is a talented woman…not to mention gorgeous!
Her CD arrived with a beautiful glossy press kit, which is sometimes an indication that the artist spent more money on the kit than on the music, but I’m glad that’s not the case here.
The genre is R&B/funk. Her voice borders on “America Idol” wailing, but she does it with much more maturity and doesn’t overdo it. I am a firm believer of ‘just because you can, doesn’t mean you should’ (I’m speaking of you, Christina Aguilera). Jamila’s voice is powerful and sexy and suits the music well.
All the songs have a 70s feel to them. The music makes me feel like I’ve gone back in time. Like I should strap on my roller skates and glittery lip-gloss.
“Fabulous” is a good way for Jamila to get the word out about her music before releasing a full length CD (which she intends to do “late 2003”). I wish her the best. If you like 70s-inspired R&B/Funk then you’ll dig this…huggy bear.
