New podcast coming summer 2021

Those of you who are here for the music, I apologize. This podcast has nothing to do with music (though it does have a kick-ass theme song).

Due to a strange experience that was had in my former house (not even by me), I started looking into a notorious gangster from the 1920s and 30s called Kid Cann. After reading a bunch of old newspaper articles I decided that it was too interesting not to share with you all.

So launching (hopefully) in June of this year (2021) I will be launching Volsteadland. You probably aren’t going to see much here for a while as all my time and brain resources are going there right now. I look forward to introducing you to my co-host Heather too.

So come over there and join us. This is gonna be fun!!

Many of you have met me at events or shared shows with me or you know of the work that I personally have done for Indiegrrl and We R Indie for the last 8 years. You know the dedication that I have given to build opportunities for independent artists as well as fund raising efforts for cancer research. Many of you I consider as extended family members because of our growing friendship through this network. I have done all of this as a volunteer with no personal income or pay. It is a love I have for my Indie family and a dream to help as many people as possible, including children who are our future Indies.

Now I am reaching out to you for you to show that you care about creating even more opportunities for independent artists and for children interested in music. We R Indie has been extended a once in a lifetime opportunity to open a music center as part of the downtown Martinsville historic restoration project. We need some kick starter funds to get the project going. ANY contribution no matter how small or large is very much appreciated to reach a goal of $25,000 that can be matched with a grant opportunity.

This facility will be used for songwriter workshops, seminars, our annual music conference, a theater that can seat up to 500 people where we will showcase Indie artists, after school music programs for children 10 to 17 years old, and more. This facility can touch a lot of people.

Melodia Women’s Choir of NYC announces its second Composers Commission Competition. Women composers based in the US are invited to submit an application for a commission to write a new work for women’s voices, to be premiered in New York City by Melodia Women’s Choir, Cynthia Powell Artistic Director, in 2012. Melodia’s 2007 competition attracted 65 submissions from composers in 24 states. Two commissions were awarded: Chris Lastovicka’s work, Notes Upon the Breeze, premiere in November 2009; Christina Whitten Thomas is creating a new work to be premiered in May 2011.

Founded by Jenny Clarke, Executive Director, in 2003, Melodia Women’s Choir is a fresh voice on the New York choral scene. An ensemble of 32 singers, Melodia explores and performs rarely heard music for women’s voices in many different styles, and nurtures emerging women composers through commissions, residencies and performances. Under the direction of Cynthia Powell, founding conductor and Artistic Director, Melodia has performed at Symphony Space, Merkin Concert Hall, Church of Saint Ignatius Loyola in collaboration with Sacred Music in a Sacred Space, and the Surrogate’s Courthouse as guest artists at Women History Month Celebrations for the NYC Comptroller. We have been heard on WNYC radio and seen on NBC TV.

Details: The winner will receive a $2,000 commission fee to compose a piece for the Choir, 4 to 10 minutes in length, which will premiere in 2012. Women of all ages residing in the U.S. who have not previously received a commission from Melodia are invited to apply. The deadline for submissions is April 1, 2011. Applicants should send one copies of the following:

A 1-2 page cover letter describing your background in music and composing, and why you would like to compose a piece for Melodia. In the heading of the letter, please include your name, mailing address, phone number, and email address.

A score for each of two original works in contrasting styles; at least one of the pieces
must be a choral or vocal work. Arrangements will not be accepted. Please do not send original materials; send SASE should you want the work samples returned at the end of the review process. If you have a CD recording of either work, please include it (one copy).

If available, a resume or CV.

I’m super excited to announce that the lovely and talented Jodi Shaw is getting ready to release her first album in five years!

I’ve been following Jodi’s career for years and love both of her previous albums, Pie Love Sky and Snow on Saturn. In fact, love so much I persuaded her to come to Minneapolis and do a house concert even though she was sick (I still feel bad about that, but we had a great time!)

Anyway, her album, In Waterland, is almost done and will be released soon but she needs our help collecting the last of the finances it will cost to bring it to the people.

She made a video featuring a new song from the album called Jack and Jill

CITATION RECORDS EXPANSION BRINGS OPPORTUNITIES FOR ARTISTS: OPEN CALL FOR MUSIC SUBMISSIONS

Southern California based Citation Records announced today that it has opened East Coast and Intermountain regional offices to facilitate recent growth.

Based in New York and New Jersey, Joe Scrocca ( Scrocca Entertainment Group) has been named manager of label operations, East Coast, and will be heading the labels day to day operations for the eastern United States.

In addition to the new east coast presence, Citation Records has also opened a dedicated A&R office positioned just outside of Park City, Utah, home of the Sundance Film Festival. This office will be receiving all physical artist submissions and will also house the music supervision and licensing division.

Citation Records has multiple immediate roster openings and is seeking new Artists for both traditional recording contracts and licensing agreements. All genres will be considered.

StreetBlast.com is working with StompOutCancer.com to help them search for
music for their upcoming CD “Stomp Out Cancer Volume 2: Hope.” All proceeds
from the sale of this CD goes to research for Ewing’s Sarcoma, a type of
cancer that attacks children and young adults.

Meet Faith and the Muse, or, rather William Faith and Monica Richards. Faith and the Muse have been delighting fans for years with a collection of classic albums that showcase their trademark style.

FATM have returned with yet another classic, “The Burning Season”. Perhaps what gripped me most about this particular album was the overall theme that is shown in Monica’s wise and telling lyrics. All of the songs have their own layered, structured sound.

My personal favorite is “Boudiccea”, an ethereal song about womanhood.

Other standout tracks include “Relic Song”, where Monica sheds light on the music scene of today compared to that of the past.

“Gone to Ground” has a very loungy feel to it as Monica’s sultry vocals get her point across.

Songs like “The Burning Season” and “Prodigal” have a timeless message that may seem familiar to some, but probably foreign to most. Monica channels her messages through poetry, and William Faith does a great job of capturing that essence and giving it a musical form.
