Hangout Concert For The Coast To Donate All Profits To Gulf Coast Relief, New Orleans Benefit Added For May 16th
The Hangout Beach Music and Arts Festival (May 14th – 16th) has teamed up with New Orleans concert promoter Stephen Rehage to create a two-city benefit event. All proceeds from the Concert for the Coast events in Gulf Shores, Ala and New Orleans, La will be donated to regional charities.
Gulf Shores, AL (PRWEB) May 11, 2010 — In light of the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill affecting the Gulf Coast, the Hangout Beach Music and Arts Festival (May 14th – 16th) will be donating all profits to regional coastal cleanup and preservation. In an effort to expand awareness and increase donations, The Hangout, along with New Orleans producer Stephen Rehage, will expand the Concert For The Coast to New Orleans. This two-city concert experience features The Hangout Music Festival in Gulf Shores, Alabama and a one-day concert event on Sunday, May 16th in downtown New Orleans. New Orleans Jazz pioneers Preservation Hall Jazz Band will be on hand at both events.
Hangout Beach Music and Arts Festival May 14th – 16th in Gulf Shores, AL. Presently, the stages are being constructed upon pristine beach, but the oil slick in the gulf threatens to endanger the wildlife habitats and livelihoods of those that live in the region. “The Gulf Coast is what makes the Hangout Music Festival so unique,” says Shaul Zislin, co-creator of the Hangout Music Festival. “It is one of the most pristine coastlines in all of America, and we will donate every penny above our costs to keep it clean.”
Stephen Rehage, producer of the Voodoo Music Experience and Essence Festival is working with the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation and Louisiana Film Office to produce the Hangout Concert for the Coast New Orleans benefit event on Sunday, May 16th. WWOZ New Orleans Public Radio will broadcast live from both events.
The Hangout Festival is expanding its three-pronged effort aimed at Gulf Coast recovery by organizing clean-up volunteers, raising public awareness, and fundraising for the families, businesses and habitats that have been affected by this catastrophe.
Leading the The Hangout?s mission for Gulf Coast awareness is national nonpartisan organization HeadCount. Festival attendees are encouraged to visit the HeadCount booth at The Hangout Concert for the Coast Gulf Shores to write their local senators and congressmen and to bring donations and supplies for Gulf Coast relief. HeadCount will host a panel with leading environmental activists and musicians on Sunday, May 16th. More information can be found in the About section at www.hangoutmusicfest.com, as well as on the Hangout Beach Music & Arts Festival’s [Facebook page].

]]>There is a new effort in Congress to fix the broader issue of how musical artists are compensated across all forms of radio. The system as it stands today is fundamentally unfair both to Internet radio services like Pandora, which pay higher royalties than other forms of radio, and to musical artists, who receive no compensation at all when their music is played on AM/FM radio.
A bill has been introduced in congress to remedy this by establishing a level playing field. We, along with the artists whose music we play, strongly support this new legislation called the Performance Rights Act (S. 379). Here’s a link for more information on the bill: [Performance Rights Act (S. 379)]
Please take just a minute to call your senator to ask them to sponsor and support the Performance Rights Act (S.379):

But I do have to admit that MJ did contribute a great deal to music and many of the artists I admire today are obviously influenced and affected by him and his life and death.
Here’s an interesting article from Moses Supposes, Moses Avalon’s blog.
As for #1 on his list, I’m glad to hear from someone who knows, because that always bothered me. A lot.
I always had a feeling that Sony was evil.
Over my 30 years in the music business I’ve worked, briefly, with or for more than one member of the Jackson camp. I never met Michael directly. What I know of him personally is filtered through my interactions with both “his people” and Sony as a consultant/journalist and one of his siblings whose album I worked on back in the 1980s. So, my connection to him was nothing great but I did get insight through social osmosis. I’ll share:

]]>Emusic announced that they’re now adding some major label stuff to their catalog.
From the website:
We are excited to announce that in early July eMusic will begin rolling out a major addition to our music catalog. The change will add nearly 200,000 tracks to the catalog, including many of the most loved names in music.
Then it lists names like Simon & Garfunkel, Bruce Springsteen, Dixie Chicks, Foo Fighter, and more.
I am not sure how I feel about this. At first I was glad, but then I remembered that part of the beauty of Emusic, and why it’s different than ‘that apple place’, is that it is (was) all independent artists. They seemed to take real pride in that, and I appreciated them greatly for it. It seems they’ve sold out. I also know from some of my musician friends that they don’t pay a lot out to them. Less than other places for sure.
Especially now that I see that where previously I got 50 downloads a month for $14.99 I will now only be getting 37 downloads and they’ve discontinued my plan. If I change plans I get an even rawer deal! So they’ll be adding a TON more music for me to choose from, but I get less of it. I am sure it’s because Madonna* wouldn’t have agreed to let her music on there without getting more money for it, so we all have to pay. But it stinks.
(*I’m only using Madonna as an example because she’s a rich artist who doesn’t need the money, I have no idea if she’s even on Emusic.)
However…if you are currently on Emusic the good news (and maybe this will off-set the downgrade in plan) they are offering a free 15-song booster pack.
We’ll see how this plays out, as it stands now I still love them (but I’d like to have kept my plan!). So if you want to join, now’s a good time. At least try out the free trial. You’ve got nothing to lose and there’s some fantastic music on there.
Oh I just saw this too, which is great news!:
Ever hesitate to download an album comprised of many tracks because it’d eat up so many credits? Album pricing will allow you to download selected albums of 12 or more tracks for the price of 12 downloads. The change will be a boon to fans of classical music and two-minute thrash-masters alike.

I got an update email from an artist who mentioned that her songs are on a new website called IndiEclectic. The dealio is this: pay $20 and they’ll give you 2,000 songs from over 200 artists. It’s basically every song on their site. Sounded interesting. So I checked it out.
Here’s their mission:
IndiEclectic.com is a community of like-minded musicians and artists who have come together to share their music in an environment unencumbered by mainstream music distributors.
The way it’s set up is that it’s mostly unknown artists (though seeing as I do what I do, I’d heard of many of them). But the way to find them is to browse the site looking for artists you DO know and appreciate and they (the artists, not the website) then recommend artists you may like, or ones they personally like. For example, I went to Alanis Morrissette. She recommended Veda Hille (who is fantastic, by the way) just browsing around from there I found a woman called Audra Mae. I listened to one of her songs and I really liked it. So hey, new discovery, Audra Mae. Voila!
It’s pretty cool. I get nothing from talking about it, and I have not signed up for it yet myself. * But I thought perhaps you would appreciate it.
*I have too many other songs I have to listen to that I rarely get time to listen to anything I choose, plus I already get 50 downloads from Emusic every month, so I simply don’t have time to listen to that much. Yes, it’s a good problem to have, trust me, I am not complaining.

Liberation Entertainment releases GIRLS ROCK: The Movie on DVD on January 27th, chronicling an all-girls rock ‘n’ roll camp in Portland.
At Rock ‘n’ Roll Camp, girls ranging in age from eight to 18 are taught that it’s OK to sweat like a pig, scream like a banshee, wail on their instruments with complete and utter abandon, and that “it is 100% okay to be exactly who you are.”
The girls have a week to select a band, an instrument they may have never played before, and write a song. In between they are taught various lessons of empowerment by indie rockers such as Carrie Brownstein from Sleater-Kinney and The Gossip’s Beth Ditto.
What happens to the girls as they are given a temporary reprieve from being sexualized, analyzed and pressured to conform is truly moving and revolutionary.

My dear Artist-friends:
You may already have received this, but it’s so important, I’m passing it along. I’m addressing this to you because, like me, you’re an artist, and the arts are deeply important to you. In the list of email addresses above, there are poets, fiction writers, playwrights, photographers, painters, film-makers, theater teachers, actors, dancers, and (literally) dozens of musicians.
Quincy Jones has started a petition to ask President-Elect Obama to appoint a Secretary of the Arts. While many other countries have had Ministers of Art or Culture for centuries, the United States has never created such a position. We in the arts need this, and the country needs the arts — now more than ever. Art changes lives, and art saves lives! The arts have the power to change our society for the better.
Please take a moment to sign this important petition and then pass it on to your friends and colleagues.

Derek Sivers, creator of CDBaby the online music store, has sold the company to Tony van Veen and Disc Makers.
At first I was alarmed by this news because I have been a CDBaby fan and affiliate for many years. But then I read the official announcement on Derek’s website and see he hasn’t been involved (other than ownership) in a long time. He says, “I haven’t worked at CD Baby since last year. In fact I’ve hardly been there since 2002.” [Read Derek’s full announcement].
So yes, I guess he did assemble a great team to work for him because in my opinion they’re still great.
I just wonder why he didn’t even mention this until March of 2008 when the 10th Anniversary hit. That seems odd. I’ve always felt that Derek and the company went hand in hand. That he’s been away from it for so long is interesting to me. I’m sure he had his reasons for not announcing it, just seems odd is all.
I wonder if this will impact sales. I for one, hope it only increases them since I sell CDs from there. In fact CDBaby is the main source of income for this site (granted it’s still only about $15 per month on average, but still!).
I did do a double take the other day when I went to the site and the look had completely changed. I wasn’t sure I was even on the right site. It looks great though.
This is also on the heels of the announcement that [Sony and BMG have parted ways]!
Comments? I’d love to hear what everyone thinks of this.

]]>As you may have noticed on MySpace, when an artist uploads a song for your listening pleasure, they can choose whether they want it to be downloadable or only streaming. The reasons for not allowing downloads are many, but one I can think of is that the song is perhaps not officially released. It’s only a demo or something, but it’s new and not available anywhere else. They are offering it to us just to test out. Either way, it’s the artist’s prerogative whether they want to give it away for free or not.
The other day I found a website that is actually a hack into MySpace. It allows people to download any song on MySpace even if the artist who placed it there does not want you to. I will not give the link because I don’t want to give them any publicity and also because I believe it could be a way to pass on viruses. But I’m sure you can find it if you try. But I would not suggest using it for the above-mentioned reasons.
What do you think about this? I’m pretty sure it’s not sanctioned by MySpace, in fact it’s owned by some yahoo in Madrid. My hope is that once MySpace learns about it, they will take him down. But who knows. I’ve been hearing some other awful things about MySpace lately so I can’t be sure. I’m not going to go into those allegations because I can’t confirm they are true and I also don’t want to lose my MySpace page. Yes, I am a coward.

Emily Asen has one of those really comfortable voices. It is very easy on the ears. That’s what grabbed me first.

The caliber of talent is incredible and these ladies will be front and center rockin’ everything from pop rock to punk to hardcore! Girls Rock & Girls Rule is also excited to announce a new partnership with the Willie Mae Rock Camp for Girls. The partnership will kick off at this event with special appearances by the Willie Mae Rock Camp Volunteer band and camper band Electric Blue, who will open the festivities. GRGR and WM are very excited about the opportunity to highlight the next generation of women rockers and have plans to expand their relationship moving into 2007.
GRGR continues its mission of creating awareness and exposure for independent female artists while helping women in the community. The Girls Rock & Girls Rule Tour debuted this year and made multiple stops along the East Coast in NY, NJ, and PA. At each GRGR event Revolutionary Records partnered with artists and organizations to offer a fantastic evening of entertainment featuring a combination of local bands as well as artists from other cities that have participated in previous GRGR shows. This insures a strong local audience and gives bands an opportunity to gain exposure with new fans while offering local live music lovers some fresh new sounds they might not otherwise have had a chance to hear. Based on the success of the past NYC events and Gail Silverman, the founderâ€
s, personal passion for music (an artist herself) the timing was definitely right to grow and expand. Given the positive and enthusiastic response from the bands, fans, and media it would seem she is on the right track! GRGR is set to become the premiere showcase for discovering the best female rockers on the scene today!
In addition to the showcases the Girls Rock & Girls Rule Documentary film is currently in production and scheduled for release in late spring 2007. The film will follow the tour, showcasing the live performances while taking you on a fascinating journey with todayâ€
s hardest rockinâ€
female musicians. Audiences will learn what it really means to be an independent female artist today, share their struggles and successes and have a chance to experience these ladies raginâ€
, rantinâ€
, snarlinâ€
and screaminâ€
both on and off stage!
Given the challenging state of the music industry and the lack of female rockers on the forefront today, the time has come for a platform that will being attention to all the fantastic women who are making the kind of music people want to hear. These are not re-touched pop princesses or radio clones they are unique, original and ready to show the world they can rock as hard if not harder than their male counterparts!
Since 2002, V.O.W. has been providing the women of New York City with the opportunity to organize, develop their leadership skills and effect domestic violence policy. Survivors of domestic violence are given the training and support they need to influence, change and improve the systems that allow domestic violence to continue. “We are thrilled to once again be part of this exciting event where women musicians are lending their beautiful voices and talent to benefit our organization. Through these types of partnerships where women come together to help each other we can make a real difference in the lives of battered women and their childrenâ€?, says Susan Lob, Director of the Battered Womenâ€
s Resource Center, which staffs VOW. To learn more about the Voices of Women Organizing Project, go to the website at: www.vowbwrc.org

Roll Camp for Girls, which was founded in 2000.

HOUSTON, TX – Some people go for cake. Others prefer speeches and formal dinners.
Madalyn Sklar decided to celebrate the tenth anniversary of gogirlsmusic.com, an online community she founded to connect with other women musicians in 1996, in a much more hands-on way—and her friends joined her.
Sklar is the creator of the GoGirlsMusicFest, Invasion of the GoGirls @ SXSW, Battle of the GoGirls and more. In the last 6 years, she has spearheaded over 100 benefit showcases for various organizations including the Rock ‘n’ Roll Camp for Girls, MusiCares, American Liver Foundation, Nicole Brown Charitable Foundation and many more.
She also recently launched GoGirlsMusic Records, an independent digital music content provider, distributor and record label. The label works closely with indie artists to get ‘great “women in music”â€
heard without the artist giving up ownership or paying big bucks.
Add the 8,500 fans on her MySpace page, and itâ€
s obvious Sklar could have a huge party in an arena with about 12,000 of her closest friends. Instead, she came up with yet another innovative idea, and took partying (and brand awareness) to an entirely new level.
In February, Sklar had the GoGirlsMusic logo tattooed on her ankle while in Austin, TX for Folk Alliance.
“I figured getting some ink was a pretty unique way to celebrate,â€? said Sklar, who is considered one of the premier consultants and educators in the indie music market. “Weâ€
ve built our reputation by doing the unexpected, so why not?
What followed is destined to become the stuff of indie music legend: her friend and fellow GoGirls member Leslie Starnes of Austin-based Bon Terra got the tattoo; then her partner Georgia; then GoGirl Melissa Mullins.
One night. Four tattoos. A record that will stand for quite some time, and a hell of a story for the Rolling Stone interview someday. Leslie and Melissa scored lifetime memberships, an offer that Sklar extended to all GoGirls members. Today, just six months later, 10 women are sporting GoGirls tattoos and she fully expects to see more at each subsequent GoGirlsMusic event.
Thatâ€
s way cooler (and longer lasting) than cake.
About GoGirlsMusic.com GoGirlsMusic.com’s mission is to promote, support and empower indie women in music! Madalyn Sklar started the organization in 1996 with a vision of bringing together independent women musicians from around the country. Ten years later, GoGirlsMusic.com has become a welcome destination for women in music through networking and events.
About GoGirlsMusic Records GoGirls Music Records is an independent digital music content provider, distributor and record label. We work closely with indie artists. Our goal is simple… get great “women in music” heard without the artist giving up their ownership or paying big bucks. Yeah we know, it’s not typical but neither are we.

]]>“It has been 10 years since a young female singer/songwriter named Sarah McLachlan organized Lilith Fair, the festival tour that came to symbolize the increased visibility enjoyed by female artists in the mid- to late ’90s.
Launched in 1997, Lilith was pegged by some as a showcase for tender, earnest folk-pop minstrels. But over its three seasons, the tour also featured a variety of rock, hip-hop and alternative acts, old and new. Radio playlists reflected a growing interest in a variety of creatively autonomous female musicians, as did seemingly countless articles on “women in rock.”
Listen to top 40 radio these days, though, and you’re not likely to find as many of these artists — or their would-be successors. Some suggest that commercial success has become a more elusive goal for women with strong, singular voices.”……. [Read whole article]

Registration is open!
When: May 5 – 7, 2006. Fri. 12 PM – 9 PM, Sat. 8:30 AM – 5 PM, Sun. 9 AM – 8 PM.
Where: Rock ‘n’ Roll Camp for Girls — 8900 ‘A’ NE Vancouver Way, Portland, OR.
Why: To raise money for the Rock ‘n’ Roll Camp for Girls.
Showcase: May 7, 2006 @ 5 PM. Venue TBA.
After hearing too many women say, “I wish the Rock ‘n’ Roll Camp for Girls was around when I was a kid!” we decided to create a rock ‘n’ roll camp for grownups. Now in its third year, this camp is a chance for women who rock, or who have always wanted to rock, to converge on Portland from all over the country and make a lot of noise.
At Ladies Rock Camp, women spend three intensive days learning an instrument, practicing, and writing an original song with a newly-formed band. Some of them have been playing music for years; some have never touched an instrument or gotten near a microphone in their lives. NO MUSICAL EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED. At lunchtime, campers watch excellent female rockers play live on the camp stage while they eat. Throughout the weekend they also attend workshops — about getting the best sound out of gear, writing songs, booking gigs, and balancing rock ‘n’ roll with the requirements of real life — taught by some of the most interesting women working in the music industry. In the evenings, those who can’t get enough of the rock stay at camp until late and jam out. Finally, at the end of the weekend, each camp band takes a turn getting on stage and playing a real rock show at a Portland venue. All this for only $300, which directly benefits the programs of the Rock ‘n’ Roll Camp for Girls.
The Rock ‘n’ Roll Camp for Girls The Rock ‘n’ Roll Camp for Girls is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization. Our mission is to encourage, engage and showcase the musical, artistic and individual talents of girls and young women ages 8-18. For six years, the camp has provided a wide variety of useful tools to its students: amplifiers, distortion pedals, drum lessons, PA systems, self-defense classes, band coaches, zine workshops, mentorship, and true belief in their abilities. It’s not just about being a musician, it’s about being an active agent in music culture and industry. We believe that by providing these tools, we can help girls develop — musically, mentally, and emotionally — toward their own ideas of who and what they want to be.

This pains me because I’ve always loved Sony, but they’ve gone overboard now. This is in an attempt to not let you copy the CD that you just bought from them. When you pop the CD into your computer, they install malware (malicious software) on your system which messes with a boat load of things. It doesn’t even stop you from copying as long as you use a good program. So it’s totally pointless, mean, disrespectful and probably illegal (they’re being sued 6 ways to Sunday)
I am not an expert at this so I’ll give you some links to investigate, but for now, we knoe that sadyly, Imogen Heap’s new CD, “Speak For Yourself” is on that is “infected” with this malware. If you have bought a copy of this CD, I would advise you to take the steps below and then return the CD to the store asking for your money back. Reason: The dis is damaged. It is, it’s just that Sony damaged it before they sold it to you. They maent to.
see the links below if you are worried about being infected by the
SunmComm DRM…which reportedly installs even if you cancel its
installation. I am told that this malware has another
dangerous security vulnerability.
