Review by Amy Lotsberg Producer of Collected Sounds

Wow sometimes my mind and body just need a CD like this. I dug Sasha Lazard’s previous release, “The Myth of Red” and I really love this one as well. That was more of an electronic pop record where this is more classical.

There are some pop songs on here as well as a Broadway tune. But all have been given this classic treatment.

That voice, oh my. I have never before been a fan of opera sounding voices but I just can’t get enough of her voice. It’s just so soothing and beautiful. The music is also a huge part, she’s joined this time by two musicians: Emily Olin on piano (Emily is also Sasha’s vocal coach) and Noah Hoffeld on cello. Being a trio, it’s simple, yet so…*not*… simple.

The sound that these three make is incredible. I’m going to have fantasy daydreams about them playing in my living room for quite some time.

Even if you think you don’t like classical music please give this a chance. I find that as I age I like it more and more, and if all classical music sounded like this, you could call me a solid fan.

Leila Britto – 10/12/2006

Comment: Very “simple” compared to her debut c.d. I have been searching for everything Sasha Lazard since I first came across her Myth of Red c.d. I found her as a guest vocalist on another c.d. She is stunning and has one of the most beautiful voices I have ever come across. I am slightly disapointed in this cd’s simplicity, it is lacking the the excitement and energy of Myth, but it is still good, different from what I think of her as doing. This is great for those relaxing moments and deffinatley worth the money. Looking forward to her new cd!

Review by Amy Lotsberg Producer of Collected Sounds

I have been addicted to this CD for weeks so I figured I might as well review it and share it with you all.

I was aware of Jenny Choi (the lead singer of Sanawon) because my lovely contributor, Anna Maria Stjarnell reviewed her CD, “Grand and Ashland” back in 2001.

Then I met Jenny at a house concert…surprisingly one I was not hosting! She was very sweet (and hilarious, I might add). She was opening for Emm Gryner that evening and as soon as she opened her mouth to sing I was hooked. (I love Emm too but that’s another story)

Her voice is very unique, almost girly but not in an annoying way at all. It’s really quite sweet and goes really well with the music.

The songs are very well written pop tunes that will stick in your head for days. I have been singing, “I’m on this tiny airplane to you…” quietly under my breath for three days now.

I just can’t seem to get enough of this record. If you like intelligently written pop-rock music please check this out.

Oh and “Sanawon” is Korean for “fierce”.

Review by Amy Lotsberg Producer of Collected Sounds

Annabella is not one person, but is the band name of Tim and Terri Dittmar, (husband and wife), from Georgetown, TX. Terri has a lovely voice that at times reminds me of Mindy Smith, especially on “You’re Still Laughing”.

The music is mellow, sweet, dreamy pop. The guitars jangle lightly while Terri’s lovely voice drift over the top on these melodic and lovely songs. There are many layers which I also love. Lots of echoey, ethereal voices blending together as on See You Again”

It was recording in their home studio, Las Olas, and the production is first class. The sound overall is very full and warm (as in, not tinny or lo-fi sounding which sometimes happens with home studios).

This is a really good CD to just relax with. Sip a glass of wine, close your eyes and just let it wash over you.

The only drawback is that the lyrics are not included in the CD nor are they on the website, at least I couldn’t find them. So that would be my only suggestion. Since I am usually very interested in what the song is telling me lyrically, I like to read along, but that’s OK. The music is so pretty, I’ll let it slide. Plus Terri is a clear singer so usually you can tell what she’s saying.

Stand out songs: Lost you, You’re Still Laughing, See You Again. But if you like one, you’ll probably like them all.

Review by Amy Lotsberg Producer of Collected Sounds

Ange Boxall is originally from Tasmania, Australia but now lives in London.

The CD starts out with “Bigger Picture” which has a sort of Rock-a-Billy/Chris Issak feel to it. Very melodic and a really fun song.

“Lady” is one of those songs that feels like it takes the listener back in time. It’s reminding me of a CD I reviewed a long time ago. It was by an artist named Circle Link and her music was sort of old-school too. Really interesting and cool.

Boxall tends to take some chances with her voice. At times it’s astonishing, others it’s just kind of weird, but always intriguing.

The music is hard to put into a genre…sometimes it sounds like adult alternative, sometimes pop, and sometimes downright honky tonk. But that’s not to say it’s a schizophrenic album, because all the songs have a commonality. Part of that commonality is her voice, and there’s something else too. I can’t quite put my finger on it.

This is an album that will remain in my regular rotation for some time to come.

I don’t really want to pick out stand out songs because I honestly like them all and they are so unique that I think there’s something for everyone. That said, I really like “A Simple Life”.

I just love Jodi Shaw’s music. Ever since I first popped in her CD, “Pie Love Sky” I have just been in love with her sound. The voice, the songs, the production, everything.

This album is another great one.

She has a sweet voice (sweet, without being syrupy girly) and a knack for writing a beautiful pop song. Her songs have been called lullabies and I guess I can see why. They won’t put you to sleep but they sure are soothing and comfortable.

She tells some great stories too. I so admire someone who can come up with such intelligent and entertaining lyrics.

I’ve always compared her to Suzanne Vega and that is certainly still true. However, I’m starting to feel that she’s also channeling Simon & Garfunkel at times. She’s a master and lovely little poppy-folks songs and can count me as a huge fan.

I can’t select favorites I love them all.

Review by Amy Lotsberg Producer of Collected Sounds

The Side Project has released a very nice soft piano pop album. I would say it fits squarely in the AAA category alongside Natalie Merchant, Sheryl Crowe and the like.

Lead Singer, Susie Anderson even reminds me of McLachlan at times. Her voice is much deeper, and less flowery/more gutsy, but there’s something about the phrasing that is similar. A beautiful voice, nonetheless.

The music is alternative pop that wanders into other genres such as trip-hop and maybe even a little jazz.

The songwriting is first class, both lyrically and melodically. The tunes will stay with you long after the last song plays.

I think this will be in my rotation for some time yet.

Stand out songs: “Hold On, Hang On”, “Neurosis”, “Interlude III” but really if you like one of their songs, you’ll probably like them all.

Review by Amy Lotsberg Producer of Collected Sounds

Olga Salamanca is Collected Sounds’ Spotlight Artist of the Month for October 2005.

Aside from being physically beautiful, Olga has a mesmerizing vocal style. She has a nice lilting quality. It’s haunting. Reminiscent, a little, of Tonya Donnelly of Belly at times. Especially when her voice takes on that almost little girl sound (as on “Blue Sky”) There is also someone else from the late early 90s that I’m being reminded of, but I can’t place it. Mazzy Star perhaps? Yes, I think that’s it.

The music is hard to categorize. It’s not really rock, because it’s mellower than that. But it’s not folk because it’s more eclectic than that. She shows a nice use of minor keys and interesting rhythms. It’s kind of psychedelic, swoopy, and very cool.

Fans of atmospheric alternative rock will be happy to have stumbled upon Olga and this very impressive debut CD.

Stand out songs: “Save Me”, “Drops of Rain”, “Silently”, “Tear I Shed” (but they’re all good, really)

Review by Amy Lotsberg Producer of Collected Sounds

One of the perks of this job/hobby is getting to hear some CDs before they’re released. In the case of Terami Hirsch’s new CD I am finding myself quite lucky!

If you’ve read my other reviews of Terami’s music, both performed live and on record, you know I am already a huge fan. Of both the woman and the artist. So it will come as no surprise to you that I am simply in love with this CD. I’ve been playing it pretty much everyday since I got it sometimes several times a day.

Her music could be described as atmospheric, dreamy pop. There’s certainly a techno-vibe to it. She plays piano beautifully and then enhances it with her techno-toys and lovely soaring voice. On some songs she’s even added cello, bass, violin, and yes-even tambourine.

Her lyrics always amazing me. As an example, here are the opening lines for the first track, “Mission to the Moon”:

Shattered in my mouth
There are splinters in these words
Thorns and roots and tangles
I have spoken
Then spitting out my teeth
Into a little silver cup
I wake up cold with eyes wide open

But really that’s just a sample; all the songs have amazing imagery like this. I’m so in awe of people like Terami who can write like that. *sigh*

Here’s where I usually say, if you like such-and-such artist, you’ll like this artist. But she really doesn’t sound like anyone else. So I’ll just say, if you like music, you need to get this record. Don’t even ask me to pick out stand out songs, because I’ll just name them all.

Review by Amy Lotsberg Producer of Collected Sounds

OK I know that this is a site predominantly for women in music, secondarily for independent artists of both genders…but when someone wants to send you a copy of Rob Dickinson’s new debut solo CD for review, you just don’t say no…at least not if you’re me.

Dickinson has been the lead singer for the dark, atmospheric band The Catherine Wheel since 1992. I’ve always had a soft spot for Rob Dickinson’s voice. It’s simply knee weakening. (Doesn’t hurt that he’s easy on the eyeballs as well).

Seems the band has been laying low for the past several years. Upon further investigation found they’ve likely broken up. Though you’d never know so in my home. I have all the CDs and play them regularly.

I have read a few other reviews of this CD and I can’t say I agree with many of them at all. They’re calling this “uncharacteristically safe”, and “faded glory”. BAH! I especially and most whole-heartedly disagree with this one which says the problem is his voice! What?!! WTF?!

Sorry, that’s not what I hear. I hear a Catherine Wheel CD without all the excess noise. I am one that loved Catherine Wheel on record but saw them live many times and was sometimes disappointed. They were too loud, too noisy. There was so much going on and it was so loud you could not pick out anything interesting and most of all could not hear his beautiful voice is the horrid club mixes. So it was CDs for me, where I could turn it up loud (or put headphones on) and really enjoy all the little bits and pieces.

So this is exactly what I was hoping for. These songs are beautiful, well, written and feel very comfortable upon the first listen. By the third or fourth spin, you’re in love.

Though I am not a musician, I can tell you that these guys are very skilled. I’m happy to hear piano here, as if you’re read other reviews of mine, you know I am a piano slut.

Rob Dickinson can play my living room anytime. But for the now, I will just add this to the rotation of CDs I am playing constantly.

Stand out songs: “My Name is Love”, “Oceans”, “Intelligent People”…Oh and “Night” alright I’m just going to start naming them all now. So “stand out”, in the true sense of that meaning? “My Name is Love”, I guess.

Why have I not heard of this band before?

If you have you’re probably read that they “Maggi, Pierce And E.J., live, breathe, eat, drink and fart music”; which makes me laugh.

I looked them up on CDBaby and find that they have several CDs, this being their sixth! The other are all named after colors as well (white, red, blue, gold, etc).

They have a great concept there. I have no idea if they’re previous releases are assembled the same way, but here’s what they did here:

The CD is really three CDs. They are labeled Morgan, Mittag, and Nacht (Morning, Midday, and Night in German). The Morgen or, Morning CD is your more mellow folky stuff. Mittag contains some more upbeat pop while Nacht simply rocks out. A great concept and a genius way of showing of your bands diversity. I’m mucho impressed!

Not to mention the fact that this band is expertly skilled at all the tempos, genres and styles and that they attempt.

The Morgan CD is filled with lovely folk songs. Generally just voice and guitar, but with a few other instruments as well. Maggi has one of those voices I could listen to all day. It almost sounds like she has a touch of a cold. A sound that is so appealing to me. Much like the voice of Anna-Lynne Williams from Trespassers William. “Big Falls, WI” is one highlight that has such a catchy sound you will be humming it long after you’ve turned off the stereo. This disc is part Paul Simon, part Joan Baez, and fully fantastic.

Which takes us to Mittag: We open with “Kennison” which is about as perfect a pop song as you could wish for.

“Music of the Sea” is also great. It has a bit of a 70s sound to it. Upbeat tempo, catchy melody and sweet harmonies.

The last track (untitled and unlisted on my copy, CDBaby lists it as the Scarf Song) is hilarious. It begins as a recording of a phone call from someone just simply giddy about seeing someone wearing a scarf that was given to someone who wore it on TV. Then breaks into a very cute song about the scarf and the person wearing it and ends with more of the recorded message.

The Nacht CD is a bit harder, but still has its soft moments. The range here is from punk to funk to new wave. “706” even has a late-Beatles sound to it…at least the first part.

I’d be hard pressed to even choose a disc that I like best let alone a best song, but I will say that I am partial to: “Michael”, “Kennison” “String of Pearls”…and “The Scarf Song” makes me smile every time.

This is a fantastic recording and I’d dare say there’s something for everyone here. For someone like me who likes many styles and genres, there’s a lot to love.

There’s something about the minimalist look of this CD cover that made me expect anything but the intricate and layered music within.

These songs are melodic and slightly theatrical. They are very well written and performed. Robertson’s voice is girlish at times and sexy kitten purr-ish at others. But always right on, and always a fantastic match for the genre.

I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention her strong similarity to early Sarah Slean. There’s a touch of Jill Tracy here as well.

If you like piano pop that borders on theatrical cabaret you must check this out.

I can’t choose any stand out songs because I honestly like them all. I tried and ended up listing almost all of them at one time or another. If pressed, “I Like It Like That” kills me! This is a great record.

Review by Amy Elle Producer of Collected Sounds

I confess, have a soft spot in my heart for Gregory Douglass. I first heard him last year when he wrote to me and professed his love for many of the same artists I adore. So when I realized he was also a musician I was pretty sure I’d like his music. He sent me a couple of CDs and I was right. He’s just fabulous (doesn’t hurt that he’s quite a hottie as well).

The new album, “Stark” was recently released so now I have a new CD to obsess over.

There is something about Douglass’ voice that is so homey, comfortable. Almost lullaby-like. The music is also very calming (at times, make no mistake, he can turn it up a notch or three as well).

The music ranges from soft whispery piano sweetness (“Alibis”) to full-on pop orchestrations with a strong voice (“Sail the Sea”). He has quite a range indeed. Though for the most part, the general feel of the CD is more of the soft “ballad” type.

I am also impressed with not only his songwriting and his vocals, but he also plays piano and guitar. That sort of talent can’t go unnoticed for too long. I said it in my last review and I mean it still, “Why is he not famous?!”

I really do adore all these songs, but I have a special fondness for “Sail the Sea”

Review by Amy Lotsberg Producer of Collected Sounds

Well, first of all…I have been a fan of Dar Williams for many years. I was even late to the party. I wasn’t aware of her until “The End of the Summer” was released. But once I heard it I quickly went and got all her previous releases. By then, I knew I had my new favorite artist.

Dar’s fans know what an amazing songwriter she is, her lyrics give me chills; sometimes because of the meanings they hold and sometimes just because I can’t believe that someone is clever enough to come up with them. I am just that impressed. She can make me laugh and cry in the same song (see “The Babysitter’s Here” from The Honesty Room.)

So it’s not that Dar Williams can do no wrong in my opinion. Just that…well, I love everything she does (and no, that’s not the same thing…because I said so, that’s why).

“Miss You Till I Meet You” is a very sweet song with lovely backing vocals.

“Echoes” is the first single. Though it’s a great song, she did not write this one so I hesitate to say it’s the best. But I do love the message: that everything you do “echoes” around the world. Everything matters. It’s true!

“Comfortably Numb” (yes THAT one) is a gorgeous remake. It features another musical goddess, Ani DiFranco (if only Sarah McLachlan were singing on there too, you’d have my perfect trio). It’s even more haunting than Pink Floyd’s original.

“So Close to My Heart” is a beautiful love song written to her son. It’s sound is, to me anyway, most like earlier Dar Williams songs. For some reason it reminds me of Peter Himmelman, as well. Lovely.

Another favorite of mine (who am I kidding? they’re all spectacular) is “You Rise and Meet the Day”. The melody is so, I don’t know, comfortable? It makes me smile.

This is a great CD by a stellar musician and if you don’t get yourself a copy you will be doing yourself a great disservice. Those of you who already love Dar’s music and know what she has to offer will not be disappointed. Those of you who are new to her music will surely become new die-hard fans and will begin buying all her CDs Start at the beginning, with The Honesty Room.

Comment: I am sixteen years old, and discovered Dar’s amazing voice and writing ability last summer. Dar is an amazing musician because her songs are like beautiful sculptures; she also has a crystal clear voice as heard in the first song on her latest CD, “My Better Self” Teen for God. This song is special to me because I am an artist in my own rite, and it shows her artistic talents in the most personal way. This CD is a special blend of spirituality, and color in the songs as seen in one of my favorite songs Echoes. The way she mixed this song is especially innovative because as I listen to it I picture myself sitting in an old concert and as the song starts the lights start going. It is an extremely visual song. “My Better Self” is a journey of emotion and hope, as seen in Miss You Till I Meet You. It is an adventure of change. It is a journey to find the self you don’t expect to be looking for until you find it. For me this album starts my “hunt” for my better self. Thanks Dar!! Keep up the Fabulous Work!!!

Comment: I completely agree with you on all accounts. I’m fourteen years old, and I’ve been a fan since I was six years old. But I think this by far her best instalment yet. The lyrics touch me, as they always do, in places of my heart and mind I didn’t even know I had. My favorite songs on this cd so far are “The Hudson” and “Teen for God” (for content and tune), and “Empire” and “Echoes” (for content), but I honestly love them all

Review by Amy Lotsberg Producer of Collected Sounds

Rebekah Jordan was Collected Sounds’ artist of the month for July 2005 and how well deserved. This is one talented lady.

These songs are very well written. They’re a nice glimpse into what this artist has to offer. Catchy and inspirational (but not at all sappy).

Her voice is beautiful, soothing, the kind you could listen all day. She’s so skilled at portraying emotion. These songs are just dripping with soul. I don’t mean “soul music” but that kind of conviction that seeps inside the listener.

The quality of her voice is especially evident on “The Art of Losing” which is a gorgeous song.

“Lovely Life” shows her funkier side.

All these songs are good actually. I like how she showcases the piano on “Sweet Here After” (but you know me, I’m a piano slut).

“Dreams” is the Fleetwood Mac cover and it’s quite nice. I’ve never really loved that band, so I prefer this version to the original.

This is a great little recording but I want MORE!! Hopefully we’ll see a full length soon.

Review by Amy Lotsberg Producer of Collected Sounds

I’ve been a fan of Imogen Heap (Immi to her fans) since here debut CD, “I Megaphone”. When I got that I played it thin. I believe it’s out of print now, but thankfully, she’s released another solo CD.

I also am a huge fan of Frou Frou, her collaboration with Guy Sigsworth. They’ve only released one CD, “Details” but it’s fantastic. Anyway, this is her solo recording and I am happy to say that it’s just as good as the previous stuff Imogen has been a part of.

On first listen none of the songs really stood out to me. They all sounded somewhat similar to each other. Except for “Hide and Seek” which she sings with many voices a capella and with voice synthesizers. But that stood out, I think, mainly because it was odd. Upon further listings the songs started to take shape in my head and I’m now seeing them all as different parts on a grand whole.

I know that an album has clicked with me the moment a song pops into my head and I realize it’s from the album…and I haven’t listened to the album in days. This one has reached that status for me.

The songs are interesting and fresh, though they sound enough like her previous projects to appeal to fans of those as well.

Imogen has a very interesting voice. I mean that in a good way. It’s very distinctive and I think lovely. When I first played her for a friend, the friends response was, ‘her voice is horrible! I love it!” But I think she has a great voice. It’s different, sure, but it’s very comforting sounding, at least to me. “Horrid” would be someone who can’t hit the notes. We all know some like that. Immi is spot on.

If you don’t already know her music, I would suggest listening on her site before buying. Her style is unique and it may not be for everyone. But if you like the snippets you hear, you’re going to like the whole album.

My favorites: “Clear the Area”, “Goodnight and Go”, and “I Am In Love With You” is super funky. I am actually loving all the songs, these are just my favorites today.

Note: It’s been brought to my attention that this CD has malware on it. It’s copy-protected and Sony believes that it’s OK to download malware on your computer if you put this in. Even if you cancel the installation some stuff can still get on there. Here are some links to more info and removal options.

Review by David Adair

Soothing South London bubble pop is built around slow and soft Dido with droplets of Bjork and Aimee Mann vocals that meander through this lush offering.

‘Have You Got It In You?’ is a provocative poser that features rumbling backing instrumentation, as doubts about other people’s motives are exposed.

This 3rd album cements Imogen’s status as an endearing and no frills pop purveyor. The empty nature of relationships comes under the microphone in a laid back bluesy nature, featuring tumultuous R N B instrumental interludes in ‘Loose Ends’, while the lyrics are sharp and to the point;

“So what do you say we give it up and walk away?
We’re overrated anyway.
We’re kissing without kissing; we’ve got it down to a fine art.”

Despite passing the respectability mark at least an album ago, Imogen has not lost any of her edge; deciding to shun the lure of major labels, by re-mortgaging her flat and releasing this album on her own label. Her vibrant independence shines through the sonic boom of ‘Daylight Robbery’ that possesses quivering bass lines and a nifty electro kick.

The aforementioned bold decision has not affected the sound or recording quality on this offering, as Imogen continues to show the vibrant and alternative side to pop music (yes, it does exist, believe it or not?).

Review by Amy Lotsberg Producer of Collected Sounds

Sarah Blasko has one of those voices I could listen to all damn day. It’s pretty and sexy while being strong and forceful at the same time. There’s a twinge of smoke to it too.

The music is hard to describe. I guess it’s rock, but it’s pretty edgy and not regular old rock. Not quite pop either. The songs are very well written, staying catchy and entertaining without ever straying to the boring or trite. Mainstream enough to keep newbies interested, yet intricate and layered enough to keep those of us listening for the 100th time, just as enthralled.

I noticed at Amazon that if you buy this one you can also get a copy of Carina Round’s The Disconnection and I realize they are sort of similar. Carina is a little harder, but Sarah still rocks out quite nicely.

“Beautiful Secrets” has a Radiohead quality to it.

This is an amazingly strong debut CD. In fact when I first heard someone mention this CD, I was sure she’d been around for a while and when I listened was even more sure. Then later found out this is her first release. This woman has a very promising future in music and I, for one, can’t wait to hear more. But for now, this one goes on repeat.

Stand out songs: All Coming Back, Don’t You Eva…oh hell, I can’t pick out just a few, they’re really all good and I love them more with each listen. You will too.

Comment: this album has an undeniable trance-like quality. It’s so perfectly summarised in the opening track All Coming Back which is in effect the albums Overscore. Sarah reveals a little about herself, and yet remains a beguiling enigman. Just as the song builds and pulls you in so completely, it draws back. Such a tease. So it is with the album, Blasko draws you in with her voice, her enchanting melodies, and then sits you back where you were at the end. It’s full of breathtaking moments. True Intentions is a song which grows and grows with each listen, Don’t U Eva is catchy and inspiring, elegant and clever pop. Always Worth It is unbelievably pure and wonderful. this woman is remarkably gifted. I can only hope the album she follows this up with matches its beauty and guile. It is without a doubt one of the most accomplished and listenable debuts I have ever heard, and was my favourite album of 2004. Electrifying.

Shauna Burns debut starts with the promising yet eerie “Ghosts and Vampires”. It shows Burns skill as a singer and pianist.

“Castle In My Cloud” is equally strong with her music showing a resemblance to that of Tori Amos.

“Petunia” is a cute little song with a pretty tune and nonsensical words.

“Nonsense” is a striking nine-minute epic that gives Burns the chance to stretch her song to the fullest. The instrumental passages really demonstrate what a lovely instrument the piano is.

“Clouds move in and out of my head
thoughts knots in my hair”

…she sings, oddly but persuasively.

This album is a stellar debut for the gifted Burns.

Review by Amy Lotsberg Producer of Collected Sounds

A Collected Sounds reader, Richard, contacted Nerina and suggested she send her CD to us and I’m so glad he did! What a gem! She’s my new favorite artist and I’ve been telling everyone I know about her. Anyone who comes to my house has to listen to “Fires”…not that anyone has complained, mind you.

Nerina Pallot has a nice smoky voice and it matches the lovely pop sounds that accompany it. Not to mention she’s gorgeous. Holy cats! Why is this woman not famous? She’s got it all.

I visited her website and got sucked into reading her stories about the nightmare that she experienced being signed by a label. I believe that “Mr. King” (track 6) is about one of the men she worked with (one of the few nice ones).

A couple of the songs, “Damascus” and “Halfway Home”, remind me of another artist that I can’t quite place. At times I think maybe Marie Frank, Dido, Natalie Imbruglia someone like that but with more of an edge.

“Sophia” really shows her voice, heavy on the piano (purrrrr).

I love this CD, I almost didn’t want to finish the review because then it meant that it would go into the “done pile” and I didn’t have to listen to it everyday. Not that I still can’t (or won’t, because I will dammit, you can’t stop me!), but I have a stack of 30 other CDs begging for my attention, and I just want to hear this one!

Don’t even think about asking me to select a few favorites. It can’t be done. Today “Geek Love” is my favorite but they’re all good. They’re also all “ear-worms”. I wake up in the middle of the night with hem in my head and though usually this bugs me, I don’t mind a bit.

Get hooked, you won’t regret it.

Review by David Adair

The epitome of independent music making, Nerina Pallot re-releases this offering on 14th Floor Records, after self-releasing it with the success of reaching the top ten on iTunes. Such was the impact that her thoughtful and slightly wallowing contemplation made on attendees at gigs of Ray Lamontagne, Joseph Arthur and Sheryl Crow, the capacity is now here for her to reach the audience this release deserves. The lamentation of reaching the end of your tether ‘Damsacus’, shows the journeying nature of this London born lass and invites you along for a melodious ride. A lush, wandering piano element elevates the unsettled and romanticising ‘Idaho’ that displays sharp self defiance, running off from the artist’s Bjork accompanied by Carole King vocal base. It is no surprise that this number is Nerina’s self professed ‘Manifesto’ song, as it shows personal strength and searching emotion.

‘Geek Love’ is an alternative romantic song that builds around crashing piano’s and Nerina’s nifty narrative style. Displaying the authoritative skill of Dostoevsky, she places you inside a tale of proud, shameless love. The soft dedicative lullaby styled number ‘Mr. King’ is a delectable piece that brings back your faith in humanity. This subtle songstress weaves her soft voice around a strolling accompaniment to recall an inspirational person. ‘Everybody’s Gone to War’ is the most piercing Nerina gets, by personalising the objects of war and pleading for humanity. Honesty and craft bind this album together to make it refreshing and thought provoking.

Comment: I read a review on Amazon.co.uk for “Fires”, and then a few weeks later came across it in HMV, so decided to take a chance and buy it, without ever hearing any of the songs. Really glad I bought it because I love this album. Its a real grower of an album and the songs really stick in your head. I’ve been playing it for about 3 weeks solid, still really like. Idaho, Sophia, Learning to Breathe and Everybodys gone to war are all brilliant tracks. With an album like this Nerina should be massive!!

Comment: I had been looking forward to this album for quite some time – I have her earlier album “Dear Frustrated Superstar” and enjoyed it very much….so I was most happy to see the new one on the store shelves during a recent visit to London and bought it immediately. Superb record, even better than her first. Yes, she most definitely deserves more recognition. For those that want more of her lovely voice, she also sings a song on Delerium’s “Chimera” CD.

Comment: Nerina is fabulous live and is currently supporting Suzanne Vega in the UK. She has a great cover of ‘Love will tear us apart’ too. For those near Coventry, she has a headline spot at the free Godiva Festiva on 8th July. Fantastic voice and ‘Fires’ is her second album. The first ‘Dear frustrated superstar’ is well worth a listen too. ‘Sophia’, ‘Idaho’, ‘Nickindia’, ‘Geek love’, ‘Mr King’ all fantastic tracks on ‘Fires’.

Comment: Amy, you’re dead right. This is an amazing album by someone who ought to be up there with Dido, Natalie, Tori etc in the public consciousness. Every time “Shiver” comes on a station like Virgin I think “…and why don’t they playlist any tracks from Fires? Why?” Not a single track on Fires comes close to “filler” status. It should be HUGE, Nerina should be HUGE… if there was any justice!

I’ll say right off the bat, that this is one CD I know I’ll listen to long after the review is posted.

“Too Bad You” is a good opening song. It has hit written all over it and prepares you for the rest of the CD.

Slankard is similar to Ani DiFranco musically, though not vocally, especially on “The Freak Out Song”

Her voice sounds similar to Shawn Colvin at times but is really pretty unique.

“Addy’s Tattoo” is pretty. Very folky and shows her voice well.

“Nearly Almost Always Nearly Almost Anything” is pretty and shows her quiet side.

Really all the songs are winners, but “Dirty Wings” is probably my favorite.

This is a really solid recording and anyone that likes rock with a pop edge ought to give it a listen.

Robin Wynn’s music has a bit of an alt-country-ish twang on some songs (Goodbye Man). But it is mostly just poppy rock (not to be confused with poppycock, far from it). These songs are very user friendly as are Wynn’s vocals.

She has a good strong voice; bluesy at times. It’s refreshing to hear someone stay in tune (been getting some weird stuff lately). I also like that her voice is not showy or overdone. It’s very comfortable, likeable, and pleasant.

Opener “Bait” is quite radio friendly and sounds like old Tegan and Sara (before they got weird).

Title track, “Oblivion” let’s Wynn rock out a bit and she does so with gusto.

These songs are all very well written and performed. They are unique yet sound familiarly homey. Like you’ve heard them before.

I can’t even think if another performer to compare to (to even give you an idea of what she is like). I guess that’s good!

I’ve listened to this so much that the songs are all familiar to me and therefore I like them all. But if I had to pick, I’d say Goodbye Man, Pyre, Jordan’s Song

Review by Amy Lotsberg Producer of Collected Sounds

I liked Coles Whalen’s EP so well it made it to my top CDs of 2004 even though it was only six songs long. What made the EP great makes this full length fabulous. That is, Whalen’s loveable voice and true gift for songwriting.

This is a collection of well-written, often catchy tunes that will stick with you long after you’ve listened to it.

Whalen’s voice is soothing and lovely. It is a perfect match for the music that it glides gently and (seemingly) effortlessly over.

For lovers of good solid folky pop, you can’t go wrong with Gee Baby or anything else by Coles Whalen that you can get your hands on. This one’s going to be in my personal rotation for quite some time.

My Favorites: Shine, Twice Weepin’ Heart, and Sevens (Which was on the EP as well). But really they’re all pretty good songs, it’s hard to pick just a few.

Comment: Consider me the Coles Whalen “Uber Fan”. Everything I have heard from Coles is note worthy especially considering that she goes it solo on so many of her tracks. I’ve seen her half a dozen times in person, and I’ve always felt that her voice is like that of a world class athlete (incredibly well trained, and impressively tuned). She has mile more talent than what we have heard so far. If she puts out a disc with a full band, we will all get to hear just how powerful that subtley smoldering voice really is! Gee Baby is worth the investment, and frankly makes a good gift for anyone who likes folk/pop/blues or jazz.

Comment: I’ve never “seen” Coles, but I have both her albums. If talent alone is enough to be a super star, Coles has it. GREAT voice! Listen closely, you’ll “feel” what she’s singing about. It’s so much more than just the notes and lyrics. It’s emotionm, melody, and beauty in every note.

Comment: I saw Coles tonight at Borders in Glendale, California. I was very impressed with her stage presence, how well she communicated to the audience and her guitar and piano playing. Her singing was soulful yet almost angelic in the sense that it carried me to a higher, more pleasant place. Any artist that can do that is like what they say on the VISA commercials–priceless. But an artist still needs to be supported so I bought both her CDs on the spot. I suggest checking out her website (www.coleswhalen.com) for her live performances or you can just buy her CDs for a great aesthetic experience. Thanks Coles!

Review by Amy Lotsberg Producer of Collected Sounds

Last year (2004), a musician named Lisa Kane who knows Beth asked me if I’d do a house concert for her. I knew who Beth was via the touring group she was a part of called Voices on the Verge but had not heard her music. I took a chance on someone I had not seen live before and turns out it was one of the best shows we’ve ever hosted. So good we went ahead and scheduled her right away again for June of 2005.

At that time I had “Kindling”, Beth’s second release of 2002 and I played it almost thin. It’s had so much use I am afraid the CD will shatter if I blow on it. So at the concert when Beth mentioned that upon her trip back home she would be starting to record a new CD I was thrilled.

I’m happy to say that “The Reverie” is one of those perfect albums. Every single song is a winner. You don’t see those kinds of recordings very often. Tori Amos’ Little Earthquakes is one (the first one I ever felt this way about), Vienna Teng’s “Waking Hour” is another, and “The Reverie” is my newest favorite.

Beth’s style however is not similar to either of those two artists. It could be described as alt.country plus folk. At times she reminds me of Dar Williams (especially on “Time”) and at other times I think more of your Gillian Welch, Kasey Chambers, etc types. But this recording has gone the extra mile and added some other genres as well.

“Swing” is indeed a very swing-y song. Complete with full band sound. It takes me back to a time I never lived but kind of wish I had. She includes a couple of honest to goodness waltzes and even covers a Duran Duran song with “The Chauffeur”. Beth makes this song her own. Listening, it’s hard to believe these notes and lyrics were ever uttered by Simon LeBon.

“Michigan” is very radio friendly and a fun sing along song. So is “End of July” the harmonies are gorgeous.

“Come Up” is a sweet little song about getting’ in on.

A note on the packaging: This is beautifully done. If you’ve read my other reviews you know that I believe packaging is an important part of the whole experience. This one is gorgeous. With the CD you get a booklet with lovely artwork, photos and the best part? The notes written by Beth regarding each song. She let’s us in on how and why the song was written, feeling surrounding it and, of course, the lyrics. Very nicely done.

This is a great CD to crank up, lay on the floor and read the booklet as you listen. Then hit repeat, again and again and again.

Well, I loved Nedelle’s previous (and debut) release, “Republic of Two” so well it made my top of 2003 list. I still listen to it on a regular basis. So I was thrilled to see that she had a new release out now.

I’m so glad the first was not a fluke. This release is as good if not better.

Nedelle’s voice is so distinct and lovely. It’s got a very homey comfortable feel to it. Any child would be lucky to have Nedelle singing lullabies to him or her.

“Follow Me” uses a instrument that I believe, is a clarinet. But perhaps has the key board paying with it giving it a hollow sound that is haunting and really cool.

I am looking forward to playing this CD on a sunny spring afternoon while I am relaxing on the porch and sipping wine.

Dorothy Scott one of those voices that when you hear her, depending on if you’re familiar with her sound, you either say, “oh it’s obviously Dorothy Scott” or “Wow, who is this?”. By that I mean you probably won’t mistake her for anyone else. It’s quite unique. That being said there are times when she reminds me of Heather Nova. It’s not often or even obvious, but after listening to the first track “Julie” I found that I had Nova’s “Winterblue” song in my head.

It’s so nice to hear something unexpected. From the cover of the CD I expected slightly jazzy, sophisticated (maybe a little uppity) AAA. But when I got instead is indescribable pop, rock, folk, combo with a jazzy feel. Not uppity at all, but still sophisticated in that it’s well written and expertly performed.

Give this one a listen, you won’t regret it.

a Review by Amy Lotsberg Producer of Collected Sounds

I’ve known Jo Davidson by name for awhile since Anna Maria Stjärnell reviewed her debut album, 2001’s “Kiss Me There” but had not heard her music as of yet. This is Davidson’s follow up to that well-received recording and this one is stellar as well.

The CD is a collection of beautiful piano rock, in the vein of Sarah McLachlan, Vienna Teng and other adult contemporary album rock artists (not that she sounds like either one of them, I’m just trying to give you an idea of the style).

The songwriting is superb and is reminiscent of the way Shawn Colvin writes. The melodies are haunting and lovely and will stick with you long after the CD ends (that is if you can resist the urge to just hit repeat all day).

Davidson has a voice that is simply gorgeous and though unique can remind the listener of other artists at times. For example, on “Writing on the Wall”, I was reminded of Lisa Loeb. “Somewhere in Between” recalls Merrie Amsterburg. But as I said, the voice is unique and doesn’t consistently sound like anyone other than Jo Davidson. I also like the lo-fi sound of her vocals on “Misery”. It makes the song seem almost urgent.

The production, overall, is also first rate. They really took time to get every little nuance correct and the result is great.

These songs are familiar and comfortable upon first listen but by the time you’ve listened three of four times, these songs are your best friends. That to me, is the mark of a fantastic songwriter. I will be listening to this CD for years to come, I am sure. I also look forward to more of Jo Davidson in the future.

Stand out songs? All of them. Honestly. There’s not a clinker on this.
