Please join us for our first show in a year and a half! (almost)
Known as “Trent Reznor with tits”
Raised in the icy shadows of Canada’s steel city smoke stacks, NLX hails from the proud tradition of BS-free northern songwriting women. She continues to carries the electronically edged pop torch with BITCH GET FIT … 16 tracks of blow your mind and open your heart lyrical and musical smack.
Amy’s Note: While I’ve not yet seen Natasha live, I know she’s amazing and I am really looking forward to this. Her albums are fantastic. And while I like folk music a lot, this is going to be something quite different!

]]>They stayed with us for most of the weekend along with their friend Candace and we had a great time. I just wish they could have stayed longer. We had a blast sharing our favorite YouTube videos together, eating Thai food, and making fun of the sound our downstairs toilet makes when it flushes. It can wake the dead with its eerie burp-like sound. The latter will appear in one of their upcoming video blogs.
I am in the process of editing the video I took. I have some songs that would potentially be ready to post, but I have to clear it with the ladies first because the content might be confidential. That sounds way worse than it is. What I mean is some of the songs they played might not be ready for mass consumption yet. That sounds wrong too. Well, at any rate…soon I will post some video. Subscribe to the blog (the big orange R on the right side nav bar) so you won’t miss anything.
For now, here’s a photo of the show. (click for larger size)

A big fat sloppy thank you goes out to all of you who came to the show and helped make our last house concert a excellently fun time (even if there were only a few of us). YOU are the reason I hate to stop doing these, but everyone else is the reason that I am.

Please join us for our last show of 2008, possibly our last show EVER (especially if we have a poor turnout)
Steph Taylor and the State Of is the product of the recent marriage between
Steph Taylor’s edgy piano playing and Nabedi Osorio’s electronic-like live
drumming. Their dark pop sensibility was born out of their mutual love and
respect for each other’s instruments and is reminiscent of artists ranging
from Tori Amos and Bjork to Radiohead, and the Police. Taylor’s style of
playing is often percussive and dark where Osorio’s drumming is melodic and
steadfast. The common bond that makes their music come together is the
intricate nature of their respective styles and when coupled, they create a
dynamic sound larger than what’s expected out of two people.
With a plethora of new material, they are touring to showcase songs from
their upcoming album, Day Of Abandon, which has tracks that vary from live
drum and bass beats met with melodic piano movements to guitar driven rock
songs, all reflecting that dark, haunting sound that Steph Taylor is
notorious for capturing. To experience a Steph Taylor show these days is not
to see a songwriter in the spotlight, backed up by a drummer hiding in the
shadows. Instead, you see two girls sitting side-by-side, small framed with
large instruments in one spotlight that grants them the rightful title,
‘indie duo’.
Amy’s Note: Steph played here with Gregory Douglass in 2006 and I’ve been anxious to have her back ever since. Her album is amazing and she’s even better live. She is bringing drummer, Nabedi Osorio, with her this time, so it may be a little wilder than last time (is that possible?)
She’s a genius, I tell you…You don’t want to miss this. Plus, she’s hilarious.

I only have a moment and I forgot the camera cord at home, so I can’t post any photos yet, but I wanted to tell you it went well and we had fun! After the show (which we held in the theater again) we put on the Olympics just in time to see Michael Phelps win his 8th Gold and we all hooted and hollered. Kyler England
Saturday August 16, 2008 8:00 pm
Collected Sounds Living Room
Minneapolis, MN
I saw Kyler England perform on the same bill as Vienna Teng a few years ago and became an instant fan. We’ve been talking about doing a show for some time now and we’re both glad it finally has
come together! Here’s a little more about her:
“Listening to any Kyler England song, it’s easy to believe you’re hearing a classic in the making: gorgeous, organic pop music that speaks to your heart like a close friend.
Her soulful voice draws you in with its fragile strength, then leaves you breathless when it soars to brilliant heights. She sings like you’d always wished you could, with all the raw honesty of your
most painful moments and all the beauty of your fiercest hopes. There is something universal going on here, something magical. Comparisons to Sarah McLachlan and Patty Griffin are mere approximations;
Kyler has a style and charisma all her own.”

]]>But for this show we decided to try something different. It was a pretty hot day, and while we have AC, we don’t have it pumping to the main floor (one of the downfalls of having a house built in 1897). So we moved it all upstairs to the theater room where, just like a real theater, it’s very cool temperature-wise. We set Edie up in front of the movie screen and went completely acoustic, nothing plugged in at all. The guests all sat in our big comfy bean bag chaise lounge chairs on the floor.
It felt very hippy dippy…in a good way!
Edie put on a fantabulous show. It was very relaxed and intimate. She told great stories, answered questions, and we even had a little bit of a sing-along.Brianna Lane was a guest and Edie asked her to sing on a couple of songs. It was just a really nice atmosphere. I kind of wish we could do all the shows this way.
Ellen Stanley from KFAI was there (HI Ellen!!) and Edie stopped by the KFAI studios on Sunday to join Ellen for her Womenfolk show. You can listen to Edie make her KFAI debut in the studio[Listen Here]
I took some photos, but I was trying to be unobtrusive so I did not use flash, and it’s pretty dark up there, so they are very grainy, but at least you can get a feel for the vibe of the night.

]]>She is about one month into recording the album in New York with some fabulous people. (Hi Alex Wong!). She and Alex have written at least one song together called Antebellum and you can read the lyrics on her scrapbook page.
It sounds fantastic with Alex working on string arrangements till the wee hours of the morning, utilizing a chamber string orchestra, and working endlessly to create a perfect sound. If you know Vienna’s work, you know that there are usually several layers to her songs. Well, it sounds like they’re spending a great deal of time and energy on making sure every string pluck and every ‘ting’ is exactly right. I know what you’re thinking…uh oh, that can make something sound antiseptic. But I wouldn’t worry, these people are geniuses and they know what they’re doing. I think we’ll love it.
You can read about it in her words on [Vienna’s Scrapbook].
Certainly check out [Eric Cheng’s site] – There are some fabulous photos of the recording sessions, including a video, which I have embedded here. But please go to his site too to see the photos and stuff.

Edie Carey in the Living Room
Saturday July 19, 2008 at 8:00pm
Collected Sounds Living Room
Minneapolis, MN
Suggested Donation $15
With her warm, graceful voice and her knack for cutting “into a subject…with a diamond-edged blade**,”
Edie Carey grabs hold of her audiences and doesn’t let go until she steps off the stage.
While her songs are what first draw listeners in, it’s what she says in between that keeps them coming back.
Carey’s wry and self-mocking humor, coupled with her ability to tell a great story, makes audiences feel as though they have just spent the
evening with a very close friend.
Given the triple threat of her magnetic stage presence, heart-grabbing songs, and almost unearthly voice,
it’s no wonder that the word about Carey is traveling fast. Performing Songwriter called her latest release,
When I Was Made, “a lovely, shimmering, heart-felt record”;
Prepare for the show, by stocking up on Edie’s music!

]]>
Artist: Rachael Sage
Date: May 31 and June 1, 2008
Venue: Collected Sounds Living Room and Aura
City: Minneapolis, MN
Review by [Amy Lotsberg] Producer of Collected Sounds
On May 31 we welcomed Rachael Sage back at Collected Sounds. We’ve hosted her several times before and it’s always a great time.
She was recently in London for a sort of a whirlwind trip so I assumed she’d be tired. If she was, she didn’t show it. She put on a fantastic show.
I did not record it this time and did not write down a set list (give me a break! I’m putting food out and taking pictures and trying to keep the dogs quiet and whatnot!) so I’m sorry I cannot tell you what she played. But I know she did mostly stuff from her new record, Chandelier.
She also played at Aura the following day. The turnout wasn’t fabulous but while she was doing sound check a woman happened by the sidewalk (the windows were open), heard Rachael, called her daughters and they all came in for the show. They also gave a generous donation for Rachael. See, all it takes is one Super Fan! This particular one told Rachael that she was like The Jewish Madonna.
Thing about Aura is you often have your drunks. There’s almost always at least one person who treats it like their own personal show where they can yell things at the performer such as, “How much for a cd?!” (though it sounds more like ‘ha mush for a she-dee?!’) and expect the artist to stop singing and answer the question. The drunk this day who was offering her music advice (obviously not knowing that she runs her own record label and has released 8 albums on her own.)
But this one was worth it. Rachael did a great couple of sets, sold some CDs and we all had a great time.

Artist: Terami Hirsch
Date: June 6. 2008
Venue: Collected Sounds Living Room
City: Minneapolis, MN
We hosted Terami Hirsch on Friday night. I have been a fan of Terami since she sent me an email back in 2000. I’ve seen her play live a few times (not enough!) and even traveled out to California once to see her and Vienna Teng play a show together. But I’ve been trying to arrange another house concert here for the last five years (she was last here in 2003) but she hadn’t been on a tour at this part of the country since. So this was long awaited and very exciting.
Terami started the show and was wonderful as always. We set up Greg’s lap top to record. The whole time I was thinking ‘I can’t wait to listen to this later!’ only to find out that when he went to hit save at the end, the computer crashed and lost everything.
Luckily I was recording it in video form on my lap top. The sound quality is poor but at least I have something to remember it by. I’m going to try and splice it up and post it on YouTube per Terami’s request. (link to her video)
Those of you who have heard both Terami’s older stuff and now her newer know that there is one major change. Her voice. Where before it was charming and quirky (and I loved it) it is now strong, clear and spectacular. It sounds even better live, if that’s possible. She mentioned to us that she believes she sill has three years of lessons left, but I hardly believe that. I can’t imagine what she’ll sound like then!
She played only stuff from To the Bone onward, but she did play Stained. Prefacing it with “Amy, I think you like this one…I may be wrong but…” Of course she’s not wrong, I love everything of hers I have heard. This was a different version. It seemed slower and more emotional. Very nice.
She talked a lot and one thing that was really cool is that one of the guests, Brian, asked her some really good questions.
He asked about her process and how each of albums is different.
Another thing that struck me and perhaps it was because the mood of the evening was pretty mellow, but it seemed that most of the songs she played, she did at a slower pace than the recorded versions.
After the show we sat around and talked and ate cheese and crackers and cookies. It was a small crowd but a nice and attentive one. It was great to meet the two new guys, Brian and Adam. You guys are great and I hope we see you again soon!
We discussed how we could make it possible for her to come back in less than 5 years. Brian suggested having people pre-pay so we’re sure she’d make enough to pay for the transportation. So that’s a possibility. Either way, I just hope we can see her again soon!

Review by [Amy] Producer of Collected Sounds
Ben played a great show at the house. We’ve been trying to arrange this show for years and something always came up (on both our sides) preventing it. So it was pretty cool that we were actually able to pull it together.
It was a very relaxed atmosphere and I must say Ben has some really cool fans and friends. We had a great time!
I didn’t write down a set list, but we did record the show so once I get a chance to listen to it I’ll write that up.

He also played at Aura the following day. The turnout was pretty abysmal. Ben said that he expected that because he’d had three really good shows in a row. I guess that’s how it goes. Rarely more than three good ones in a row! (by ‘good’ I mean, well attended…he’s always good).
There was only one reservation and that person didn’t even show. Luckily my fabulous friends stepped up and joined us for this small, but also great, show.

Aura has pretty poor lighting in the middle of the afternoon!

We had some no-shows, which always sucks because those folks took seats away from other people who really wanted to be there and had to be turned down. But what can you do? Some people’s kids just have no manners, I guess. The good news is that only 3 or 4 people had to sit on the floor.
And we do it again tonight!

Well, it was years in the making but it finally happened. We got to host Vienna Teng. I couldn’t have been more excited. And Vienna and Alex did not disappoint. I was of course familiar with Vienna’s music, but I didn’t know Alex’s until recently. He’s wonderful too and they are fabulous together.
The vibes of the shows were quite different. Thursday night was actually pretty rockin’ while it seemed everyone was pretty mellow on Friday. Sort of the opposite of what I was expecting. But great shows, both. I would love to have either or both of them back anytime!!!

I just went through my RSVPs for the upcoming house concert and we have 30 people coming. Ummm, I can’t fit 30 people in my living room. There are always folks who say they’re coming and don’t. But there are also usually some that say they’re coming alone and bring 3 friends. Eeeek. Guess I’d better start rearranging furniture!

and find out if she’s coming to your town soon and if so, go go go.
She did tell me that she doesn’t always talk so much throughout the songs in other places, but does here. Must be something about the atmosphere.
She literally talks through the songs, as in “la la la…that reminds me…” and then goes into a story while she is still playing. It’s hilarious.
She apologized for doing that but honstly, I love that. I mean I can hear the song in it’s entirety on the CD, when I see someone live I want to see more of THEM.
What a fun entertainer.

This was a unique, interesting, different show. Stephanie played piano (keyboard), trumpet and a loop station thing she had just gotten.
What a fun toy. She made some very cool sounds. The turnout was kind of small, but I think that was due in part to the fact that we had our first snow of the year
that fell that afternoon just 3 hours before the show started. But those who came got a fun evening of crazy music with a very talented woman.

We had a few snafus concerning who was opening (missed emails and mis-communications) but it all was evened out and turned out to be a great event.
Cat Kinsey is a wonderful performer as is Chad Hinman who she brought with her. He did a short opening set and wowed all of us. He has a smooth voice and plays guitar so well. We could have watched/listened to him all night!
Then Cat did a set and was also quite impressive. Her songs are so touching she had a couple people crying! Her voice just soared through the room. I believe I got chills a few times.
They then did a few songs together as well. Their voices blend together beautifully and his amazing guitar work really enhnances her already wonderful music.
They are lovely people and I hope to get them back here in the winter.(2003-2004)

Note: Cat has left the business and therefore has no website.

This concert was great! Jaia impressed everyone. Her banjo playing was/is amazing. I used to think banjo=Steve Martin or theme from “Deliverance” but this is so different. Ajaia said she tunes it to her own individual tuning that she made up years ago and it’s apparently nothing like actual banjo tuning. So she makes it sound more like a sitar. She also plays guitar VERY WELL. She does a lot of finger picking (which I love) and she uses both the guitar and the banjo as percussion instruments as well. Banging on them on various parts of the instrument making a full rich sound (the tambourine attached to her foot with a rubber band helped too).
If you get a chance to see her do it. And you just might as she is on the road until Thanksgiving 2003. Wow, long tour but it gives almost everyone a chance to catch her.
Oh and she’s a lovely person as well. Very gracious, sweet and charming.
She’s welcome back anytime!

Review by [Amy Lotsberg] Producer of Collected Sounds
I am not very good at doing reviews of shows that happen in my home. There are just so many things to tend to and be aware of, that I don’t sit down and write things as they happen. So I’ll this is all quite general.
First of all when Terami and Natalie arrived at my home Terami asked if she would finally be able to meet my friend Anne who she had heard a lot about from me. I said that yes Anne was coming to the show. So Terami suggested I call Anne and see if she would be interested in performing as well. Cause that’s just how gracious Terami is. So I called Anne and she was Johnny (Anne)-On-The-Spot. She grabbed her guitar and came on over.
Set list
Anne’s Set List
“Untitled” (new song)
“Kiss This Away”
“I Need You”

Natalie Wattre
Then Natalie came on and rocked us. Her voice is amazing and so is her performance in general. If you get a change to see her live do it for sure!
Natalie’s Set List

“Wayside”
“The Love You Give ”
“How Does it Feel”
“Revolution”
(Tracy Chapman cover)
“Reeling”
“Never Coming Back?”

Terami was great also, as usual. I’ve been lucky enough to see her perform a few times now. But it’s always special when it’s in your own home.

“Intoxicated”
“Pet”
“Stained”
“Roadside”

I apologize in advance that I am not going to write a very in-depth review here as I was a bit too wound up to record any of this evening in my brain.
But we had gorgeous weather (the one nice day in the middle of 2 weeks of rainy and hot crap), Terami and Kevin are just as nice as they are talented (and that’s QUITE).
We had a pretty good turn out though some didn’t show, which is a bummer because I could have used that space for others who wanted to come. Oh well. I can’t control everything can I?
The opening act was Rebekah Lawsteun of Minneapolis band Silent Iris (though she is embarking on her solo career). She was great. Photos of her are just below the photos of Terami and Kevin.
So enjoy these pictures of the backyard performances!

Artist: Sarah Slean
Date: February 15, 2000
Opening Act: Tori Cassis (yes, I know they played in reverse order)
Venue: Collected Sounds Living Room
City: Minneapolis, MN
Review by [Amy Lotsberg] Producer of Collected Sounds
I hosted my first Living Room Concert featuring Sarah Slean and Tory Cassis on Tuesday night February 15th. Background on performers:
Sarah Slean is a singer songwriter from Toronto, ON. She plays piano and sings like an angel.
Tory Cassis is a guitar player-singer-songwriter also from Toronto. He was nominated for a Juno Award for Best New Male Artist for 2000 and though he did not win, he deserved to!
The Show:
Well since this was my very first Living Room Concert I was a bit nervous but as soon as the band got there I was put at ease. They are all so very nice and easy-going.
The musicians consisted of: Sarah, Tory, Bass Player Derek Brady and Mark Mariash on the Drums.
They set up their “stage” in our dining room, which adjoins to the living room. Luckily we didn’t have a lot of furniture to move since we didn’t have much in our dining room! People started arriving and the band took a little break to get some dinner while we chit-chatted and in some cases, got to know each other. Most of the folks in the room I knew but some others had heard about the show from either the internet or were friends of friends so it was a mixed group. One person (Hi Travis!) drove 12 hours from Regina Saskatchewan to be there!
Sarah opened and from the first note she played she had us all in the palm of her hand. Some of her songs are very low-key and semi quiet and while she played these it was so still in the room you could hear a pin drop.
There were some folks there who were familiar with her music and she took requests as well as performing the songs she had planned to hear. I think one of the highlights was when the whole thing was over and almost everyone had left, one fan said to her, “I was really hoping you would play ‘Blue Parade’ tonight.” so she sat right back down at the piano and played it just for him (and the 4 or 5 others that were still there). It was such a treat! She is an amazing and captivating performer.
Tory Cassis performed next. No one in the room had even heard of him before this night. I think he felt a little strange about that since he is so well known in Canada but he treated us all like we were good friends. It’s hard to describe his style since it changes from song to song.
Sometimes he sounds like Bob Dylan (only with a much nicer and sexier voice), other times he rocked out and reminded us of the band Morphine (the voice not so much the music). He also sang a couple of “swingin” type songs where he sounded like Harry Connick, Jr or Ol’ Blue Eyes.
He was truly amazing. It doesn’t hurt that he is a very sweet guy (and not bad lookin’ either!)
My three dogs were a bit of a challenge. One of them, Murphy, is one of those dogs that has to be the center of attention. He didn’t like it so much that there were 20 people in the house that were paying attention to something other than him. So he remedied that by wandering through the set and barking at the audience. I think it was hard for Sarah & Tory not to laugh! But they were very cool about it and played along.
