Hi friends!
I don’t post all the podcast stuff here because I feel like most of you probably don’t care (or if you do, you’re already subscribed). But I thought I’d just post one more. This is our 4th Episode so if you haven’t heard the rest, you might want to go back and listen to those. But this one I’m especially excited about.
Two of my friends contributed voice work (one is my husband) and another friend did the hilarious artwork. Also I got to interview my friend Melissa Oliveri about her experience that led me to create this podcast!

If I ever supported you as an artist over the last 20 years, I’d love it if you gave us a listen.

Alright friends, I’m ready to announce…..the new podcast series Volsteadland.

Volsteadland

New podcast coming summer 2021

Those of you who are here for the music, I apologize. This podcast has nothing to do with music (though it does have a kick-ass theme song).

Due to a strange experience that was had in my former house (not even by me), I started looking into a notorious gangster from the 1920s and 30s called Kid Cann. After reading a bunch of old newspaper articles I decided that it was too interesting not to share with you all.

So launching (hopefully) in June of this year (2021) I will be launching Volsteadland. You probably aren’t going to see much here for a while as all my time and brain resources are going there right now. I look forward to introducing you to my co-host Heather too.

So come over there and join us. This is gonna be fun!!

Hi all

Just wanted to let you know that while I am doing research for another podcast series, I thought I’d drop a quick and easy (haha*) one on you.

night pic of a tree against a blue sky

I actually took this pic in my backyard just before a storm broke.

Go! Listen! Subscribe, download, etc. And if you like it, it would be super helpful if you would write a review on Apple (I hate that Apple is the only one that matters, but it’s the truth).

*I thought just reading a story would be easy. But I should have learned my lesson with my first one, A Haunted House. I recorded chapter 1 4 times, and then editing in the theme song, background instruments, etc took DAYS! But I’m getting better at it, and it shouldn’t take so long in the future.

I apologize for the recent absence. I have been posting on social media (Instagram, Facebook and Twitter) but haven’t had anything really, to share with you that can’t be said in a couple of sentences. So I have been letting the blog go.

Another reason for my absence is that I’ve been busy! In a pandemic? Yes! I’m taking a ton of classes on Coursera (Social Psychology, Anti-Racism, Brain Help, Sleep Neurobiology, and more), and also I have a new project that I don’t want to say anything about yet. But let’s just say, it is taking up a lot of my time doing the research for it. I’m currently slogging through about 100 New York Times articles and creating a timeline…One more hint…it’s not at all music-related.

But…today I learned that the band Overcoats (who I featured a while back) have started a podcast! It’s called Between Two Bald Girls. The hosts, Hanna Elion and JJ Mitchell are not only talented musical artists, but they’re comedians!

They describe it as “2 Dope Queens” meets “My Dad Wrote A Porno,” with a side of “Stuff Mom Never Told You.”

Listen here or on your favorite podcast app.

And if you’re still here, and you want me to keep this up let me know. Otherwise Collected Sounds will likely just turn into a social media presence.

Today’s Podcast Recommendation is Fairytales for Unwanted Children. Fairy Tales for Unwanted Children

The episodes are stories written by the host, Scott Thrower. They are wonderfully dark stories with a lesson, a twist, or just food for thought. He ends each episode with “did you find a moral of the story?” and then invites you to go to his Twitter, or the Facebook page for discussion.

The characters rarely have names, but they are very well written personalities. The stories are magical and beautiful. Scott has a lovely soothing voice that I could listen to all day. I tend to listen to these at night to wind down. Then I have to listen again later because I often fall asleep!

Scott is also really great to his supporters. Shortly after I joined the Facebook group and offered to help him copy edit* his new book, he sent me a handwritten letter and a new story he’d written. (*I’m not a copy editor – I wish I was – but he asked fans to help out).

Scott's letter to Amy

He’s very generous to his listeners and readers, letting us get first listens to his new episodes and freebie copies of his books. He also reaches out to fans for story ideas or prompts.

Come on over and join the Facebook group, it’s filled with lovely people who love the podcast and his books and want to support it, and each other. He will sometimes post a scenario and question for fans to comment on, and it’s always interesting to see responses (and his responses to those).

Please listen and consider subscribing on Patreon to support this wonderful podcaster, or you can buy his books on Amazon too (see below).

Just some of my favorite episodes:
28: Ship (the wind falls in love with a ship)
38: The Dragon and the Staircase (an elderly couple take care of a dragon)
42: Pockets (pockets refill themselves)
51: The Woman at the Bar (a stranger leaves a magic coin)
56: Feathers (a man turns into a bird)
The Woodcut series (4 parts 60-63) – this one was also a book. The book is excellent!
67: Dead Man’s Clothes (tattered clothing makes a man rich)
74: Tiny (a tiny village and a large woman)
The Sleep Series (6 parts, 100-105)

This is one of the first podcasts I found when I first discovered podcasts in general. I was immediately interested because they’re so well written, and the host, Roman Mars has an amazingly soothing voice.

So the premise is that each episode is a glimpse into the “hidden world of everyday design”. I never once thought about why those benches outside buildings downtown are shaped the way they are. Turns out, they’re designed to be comfortable enough to sit for a bit when you’re waiting for the bus but not so comfortable you sit there all day. (sorry I can’t find which episode this was, if you know, drop it in the comments!)

There’s a fascinating one about where all your recycling goes. It might not be what you think (341: National Sword).

They did a sub-section of episodes that talked about clothing and fashion design that I found interesting as well (Plaid: Articles of Interest #2 and Punk: Articles of Interest #6).

If you were a bit older than me, you might remember houses that you could buy from a catalog and then put together yourself. Yep, from Sears. (323: The House that Came in the Mail).

This podcast is brought to you by the great podcast collective, Radiotopia. There are so many good podcasts on this network, but this is for sure, one at the top for me.

Today’s Podcast Recommendation is Heavyweight. Your host is Jonathan Goldstein and he is more than willing to help you solve that problem or question that’s been bothering you.

This Gimlet Media podcast one is one of those that will make you feel really uplifted or quite sad. People are invited to reach out to the podcast for help in resolving some issue or misunderstanding, or some mystery about their lives.

For example, One woman wanted to know why she was kicked out of her sorority back in college because she knew the reason that they gave her was bullshit. So Jonathan reached out to her former college and sorority sisters to get some answers. (10: Rose)

One where Jonathan wanted to know why his father and uncle (father’s brother) weren’t speaking to each other. So they went on a road trip to bring the two together. (1:Buzz)

“Why is Mason Reese Crying” (no number but it was released Oct 8, 2020) was originally done for another Gimlet Media podcast, Reply All. It was about a child actor who was seen sobbing uncontrollably on the Mike Douglas show back in the 70s. So he tracked down the actor and interviewed him. It was very interesting.

Another nice tip is that each episode begins with Jonathan calling his friend Jackie and she’s hilariously mean to him.

All the episodes are fascinating, but be sure to check out…aside from those listed above:
16: Rob (Rob Cordray wants answers on his childhood broken arm)
27: Scott (a man who has a huge regret about a choice he made in his past)
25: Becky and Jo (sisters want answers about why their favorite babysitter disappeared)

True Crime Brewery logo

What I love about this one are the hosts, Dick and Jill. The premise is that they discuss true crime stories while sitting at the “corner end” of their favorite crowded bar, drinking a beer that has some sort of connection to the story at hand. Jill doesn’t drink beer, so she leaves it up to Dick to give his review of the beer he chooses for the day.

When I first heard it I was like, “who the hell are these people? they sound like kindergarten teachers but they talk about gruesome murders and say f8ck a lot.” Their voices are very soothing and comforting, and then Jill will throw in, “yeah, he was a real sh!thead”.

It’s not exaggerated, fake, folksy either. This is how they are, and they sound very honest and pure. They cover well-known cases (such as Lori Vallow Daybell/Chad Daybell case, and The Delphi Murders) that are covered on other podcasts or True Crime TV shows as well as some hidden gems. So, this is great for either a new take on a case you already know (we all do that!) or to learn about cases new to you.

Dick is a doctor so often he is able to give some medical expertise and perspective on the cases, whether it be psychological or physical. I believe he’s a pediatrician. Their company is called Tie Grabber and the story behind that is cute, but I’ll let you find it on your own.

Their newest episode, “Bedroom Betrayal: The Case of Leann Fletcher” you will be familiar with if you listen to/watch Forensic Files. This is the one where the woman “shot herself” in their bedroom after they’d been to target practice (real sneaky there, Mr. Fletcher).

I also like how TCB puts their episodes on YouTube and create a slide show to go with it. So, you’ll see pictures of the people and locations in the stories.

For those who have issues with how people speak: Jill pronounces words that begin with “un” as “on”, as in: “an on-expected death”. In case that bothers you. You’ll get over it. I did.

One of their ads ends with Jill saying, “I’m sorry for swearing” (she said sh!t earlier). Dick sweetly and cheerily says, “Not a f8cking problem.”

I love these two.

I’ve long been a fan of Dex’s acting work (who doesn’t want to be a Braverman?), and I was a little dubious about how he might handle interviewing people. Not to fear, he’s a natural.

His co-host Monica is wonderful as well. She mainly stays silent and lets Dax and the guest do all the talking. But she is the fact-checker so she is taking notes and then the last part of the episode is her going over things that were said, lending some clarity to the interview if needed.

They interview some really big names. Sean Penn, Bill Gates, Esther Perel, I mean the list goes on and on. Check out my favorites below.

They interviewed Dr. Laurie Santos who is a professor at Yale and teaches a course on Coursera called The Science of Well Being. I took this course and I love it, and recommend it to everyone! Here’s the link to it, (it’s free).

Some of my favorite episodes:
Susan David – She is a psychologist and has some great ideas about emotions and growth
David Farrier – he actually has two episodes, one regular interview, and another one called Armchaired and Dangerous where he explains the Lizard People theory. I loved both episodes.
Jason Bateman – there’s a very lengthy discussion about which direction they each wipe. Yes, that’s what I said.
Hilary Clinton – I told you they get big names.
Keith Urban – “no whining on the yacht.”
David Chang – one of my favorite chefs
Esther Perel – therapist extraordinaire (has 2 of her own amazing pods too)
Beanie Feldstein – you know her if you watch TV at all; she’s very charming.

Actually, there’s only been one episode I’ve found boring and I don’t even remember who it was!

I love this show, and even if you think you are not a fan of Dax, you will be in love with him after listening. He’s a beautiful human. So is Monica.

Usually, I just throw it out there and give a few of my favorites, but this time I’m going to implore you to listen in particular the Happiness Episode: “#168 The Happiness Calculator vs. Alex Goldman.” More on that in a minute.

This show is hosted by Alex Goldman and PJ Vogt. It’s basically a podcast about the internet. Which may sound boring on the surface, but it’s anything but. I love it. If you’ve ever read a tweet you didn’t understand or be baffled why something is popular, this will help you understand.

OK so, in this episode Alex is interviewing a man Peter Dodds, a data scientist who is involved in this project called the Hedonometer, where researchers measure everyone’s happiness based on their social media posts. It’s fascinating how they can quantify happiness but also interesting what makes us happy (Christmas) and what makes us sad (suicide or terrorist). He is explaining this all to PJ Vogt, his co-host.

For English speakers, the happiest time is the holidays, Christmas Day in particular. So, when measuring happiness, they will say that happiness “went up half a Christmas day” and they use that as the yardstick for happiness.

It was interesting to learn about the most unhappy date in history (since this project began, and up to when the interview happened). No, I’m not going to tell you 🙂

The hosts also talk about things that make them happy and I don’t want to spoil anything, but basically, it’s about self-care. Alex talks about how he went into the kitchen one morning and saw half a lemon sitting there. He asked his wife about it and she said she used the other half for her water. He was sort of blown away by the fact that his wife had identified that she likes lemon in her water, and then went and did something for herself to make that happen. This is second nature to me, but I understand that others do not think this way. I wish they did.

So please take a listen to this podcast, but especially this episode. This might be a tough winter for some of us and I want you all to be happy.

Here’s the article for the New York Times called “Is Everybody Doing … OK? Let’s Ask Social Media”.

Other episodes I liked:
#166 Country of Liars (it’s about Q-Anon)
#51 Perfect Crime (about a woman who plays the same part in a play, every night. For years)
#164 Long Distance: The Real Alex Martin (3 years ago, Alex returned a call from a telephone spammer and held his feet to the fire. He actually traveled to India to meet him. This is the follow-up. Original episodes are #102-103)
#161 Brian vs. Brian (a Christmas song that almost wasn’t)
#96 The Secret Life of Alex Goldman (Alex lets PJ hack his phone giving him surveillance of his life)
#83 Voyage into Pizzagate (the conspiracy theory explained)
OK, I’ll stop there, I love all the episodes, but these are just a few of my favorites.

I first heard about author Brené Brown when Karen and Georgia (My Favorite Murder) talked about her and her books (and TED talk). Then right when the pandemic hit, she put out a podcast. So of course, I needed to listen.

According to Wikipedia she: “is an American professor, lecturer, author, and podcast host. Brown holds the Huffington Foundation’s Brené Brown Endowed Chair at the University of Houston’s Graduate College of Social Work and is a visiting professor in management at McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas at Austin.”

She interviews some amazing people. I haven’t heard all the episodes, but the ones I have are really informative and insightful. She’s a good interviewer (though a little over the top fan-girling at times), but she asks good questions coming from a place of knowledge yet willingness to learn more.

The one with Joe Biden, if you voted for him you’ll feel better about your vote. If you didn’t, I think you’ll feel better about him winning.

I’d say you will learn something from each episode. Even on topics that you thought you knew.

I think many of us need to explore things that are outside our bubble because really our bubbles are bigger than we know, and it’s our responsibility as citizens of the world, to know as much as possible.

Maybe that’s just my opinion, but if we all take time to learn and care about others, the world would definitely be a better place.

Some of my favorite episodes:
with Joe Biden on Empathy, Unity, and Courage
with Laverne Cox on Transgender Representation, Advocacy + the Power of Love
with Ibram X. Kendi on How to be an Antiracist

I featured Ben this past week as a musician but he’s also a podcaster…and author, but that’s another story (see what I did there?).

I downloaded a few episodes over the last few months and listened to them, but I think I listened distractedly because I didn’t get out of it what I did this time around. I really spent some time with it yesterday using headphones (important) and really paying attention. The concept is that he matches up an author with a singer-songwriter. So, the author reads a piece of their work and then the musician performs a song they wrote based on that story.

I listened to the Joyce Carol Oates episodes and her stories are heartbreaking! I’ve never read anything by her and now I am so intrigued.

One episode also features musicians Jennifer Marks who is a friend of Collected Sounds from back in the day. It was great to hear her again. I also never knew I actually liked banjo music until I heard Tony Trishka. Wow. All three of the above are on Episode 11.

Some of my other favorite episodes:

Ethan Lipton and Sara Jaffee (6)

Ben Sollee and James Lindsey (12)

Today’s podcast recommendation is Sleep with Me. No, it’s not naughty. It’s a guide to help you sleep. Our host is Scooter, aka Scoots, aka Drew Ackerman.

I discovered this podcast several years ago when I was having trouble sleeping (due to a shitty job that was causing me stress). If you’re like me, and bedtime is when your brain wakes up and goes, “Hey what about that document, did you remember to shred that?” or “do dogs have belly buttons?” or “did you *really* lock all the doors though?” … then this is for you.

It is a guide to help you turn off all those other thoughts and focus on Scooter as he guides you to sleep by rambling about nearly nothing in his “smooth, dulcet tones”.

I felt with all the anxiety most of us have been feeling lately (and all the horror I recommended in October) you might welcome a nice gentle podcast to lull you to sleep or at least calm you.

There are a lot of sleep podcasts out there, and you should try a bunch to see what works for you, but this is my favorite. Mostly because Scoots is so charming and I love listening to my “Borefriend”.

I urge you to follow and become a patron on Patreon. He’s very generous and puts out many episodes each week! You’ll get a special RSS feed that allows you to download the special episodes (without the meandering introductions, if you just want the story).

He does a few series where he talks you through a TV show. He’s done Game of Thrones, Doctor Who and his newest one that I love is The Great British Baking Show. I know, right?! I’ve already listened to the three episodes on this and even watched the show so I could see all the things he described. It’s soooo wonderful!

Beautiful Anonymous logoToday’s Podcast Recommendation is Beautiful Anonymous or Beautiful Stories from Anonymous People. I’d say of all the podcasts I listen to, this is the one that I am the most diligent with keeping up. This is one in which I have heard every episode at least once.*

The premise is this: Host Chris Getherd takes a phone call from a random stranger. They remain anonymous and are encouraged to talk with Chris for an hour, about anything they wish. Chris may not end the call (though the caller may) until that hour is up. Their tag line is: “1 phone call. 1 hour. No names. No holds barred”.

At first, anyway, I believe Chris was not prepped on what the person was going to talk about, but now I think they’ve changed things up a bit as it seems he does have some idea, from his producer.

You’ll hear from a woman who is reporting to prison the following morning, a woman who is in the waiting room anticipating the results of her daughter’s cancer tests, an aspiring pro wrestler, a bartender telling stories about the drunks, a stay-at-home dad, and a ton of other random situations. It’s always interesting and sometimes heartbreaking.

At any rate, the calls are fascinating if you’re at all interested in people and how wonderful and different we all are.

*once it went behind a paywall, there have been ones that I have missed. It really bothers me when podcasts do this. I understand the need to make money, absolutely. But when they go on a private thing like Stitcher Premium it’s annoying. I have a podcast app that I love (after trying out a ton of them) and it’s not Stitcher. So if I’m going to monetarily support the pods I love, I have to have a bunch of different apps, and pay a ton of different ways, etc. I’m already supporting those I really love on Patreon, but when they all pick a different platform it makes it really hard for us to support them all. Rant over.

Limetown logoToday’s podcast recommendation is Limetown.

This is a radio drama and a serial podcast, meaning you must start with the first episode.

It’s the story of a community of people who just disappeared from a small town. Our heroine is Lia Haddock and she is investigating what happened to this town. It hit the news but quickly disappeared too. She’s not willing to let it go as she has a tie to Limetown.

The episodes are around 30 minutes with some shorty extras. The story moves quickly, you’ll likely sip through this pretty quickly as it’s riveting. I’ll be honest, I got a little confused about all the male characters and who they were, I made a cheat sheet for who they are so I could refer while listening.

This became a WebTV show as well starring Jessica Biel and Stanley Tucci, but it only lasted one season on Facebook Watch before it was canceled (my guess is the “Facebook Watch” part was the problem, not the production of the show. I thought it was pretty decent.)

There is also a novel that is a prequel to the story covered in the podcast.

Give it a listen, I hope you like it!

If you’re looking for something truly spooky, like I mean really…this is a good one.
I don’t scare easily and none of these so far have legit scared me, like losing sleep…but this is probably as close as I’ll get. I’ve definitely been creeped out and gotten some chills.
I’d say if you like “Full Body Chills” you’ll like this too, except these are true stories told by people who lived them, so even spookier!

Today’s Podcast Recommendation is another two-fer! These two are similar in that they are super cool, weird spooky short stories. Full Body Chills and Radio Rental.

Full Body Chills logo

Full Body Chills is hosted by Ashley Flowers. We talked about her last week when we covered the Supernatural Podcast. The difference between this one and Supernatural is that these are fictional. They are written by Ashley and David Flowers and other members of their team. They are read by Ashley herself. She’s a very engaging storyteller.

Season two was just released on October 5, 2020, so if you’re not yet caught up, get there! I will warn that the last episode of season 1 is a real creeper. Seriously, I had to stop listening and rest and then pick it up a day or so later.

Radio Rental LogoRadio Rental is a bit more tongue in cheek and silly, but also scary…or at least super weird. The official description is A mysterious video rental store with a tape collection of true scary stories narrated by the people who experienced them.
Your host is Terry Carnation (voiced by Rain Wilson) who is the shopkeeper. He introduces the stories, but they’re told mostly by the anonymous folks who lived these stories, but at times are interviewed by another person. I think it’s supposed to be a secret who this is because he’s not in the credits, But I swear I know who it is.

This one has 14 episodes (as of today) but I believe a second season is coming too. I must say, they go all-in on this. Terry Carnation has his own Twitter account, and you can sign up for a membership with the video store on their website. They even give a physical address (a mall in Georgia) and have photos of mini versions of the store on their website. I love everything about this one.

Some of my favorite episodes
Full Body Chills:
“Ersatz – I love this one because I’ve personally experienced this phenomenon!
“It’s Never Just a Mannequin” – this is the one I couldn’t listen to all the way through because it was so scary.
..but honestly, I think I loved all ten episodes.

Radio Rental:
Episode 2: the story called “Doppelganger” really stuck with me. I thought about it for days.
Episode 4: the second story, “Laura of the Woods” was a trip!

Bonus, both of these podcasts have “babysitter” themed episode. Happy Halloween!

Today’s Podcast Recommendation is another twofer…Creepy and The No Sleep Podcast

The reason I put these two together is that they’re similar in style. Sure they’re both scary, but they’re also anthologies of stories found on the internet, aka CreepyPastas.
Creepy Podcast logo
Creepy is one I support on Patreon and I will say Jon Grilz (the host) is very generous and you get lots of perks for only a few dollars per month. But you can also listen for free on any podcast app.
Jon reads many of the stories, at least ones I’ve listened to (and I haven’t even scratched the surface, there are so many) in his soft but spooky voice. But in more recent episodes he has some guest readers as well.
Some of these stories are just silly and not written very well, but others will have you chilled to the bone.
Bonus: Jon Grilz is a Minnesotan!
Note: he previously had a podcast called Small Town Horror that was a serialized story about a man returning to his home after he and his sister had gone missing.

No Sleep Podcast logoNo Sleep Podcast has a bit more “production”, they have a showrunner and a ton of voice actors, producers, illustrators, and more.
Instead of readings, these are audio dramas. This started out as a Reddit forum but has grown into a full-blown production.
The host Jim Cummings is based in Toronto, Canada.
There are currently 15 seasons, each with 25 episodes, so you won’t run out of stories any time soon!

This one doesn’t just use Creepypastas, they accept (and pay for) quality written stories.

Today’s recommended podcast is Supernatural with Ashley Flowers

Ashley Flowers is probably best known for her podcast, Crime Junkie. But instead of True Crime, this one is…true…weirdness?!
In this one, she covers stories that you may know, like Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, Dyatlov Pass, MK-Ultra, Who Put Bella in the Wych Elm? and also other things like exorcisms, alien abductions, and more.

Ashley is a great storyteller and these stories are well researched and presented. If you like spooky stuff that’s real, this is your pod.

Today’s podcast recommendation is a two-for-one: Lore and Cabinet of Curiosities

Since we’re heading into the Best Time of the Year…Halloween, I am going to start sharing my favorite spooky ones and I’m starting with giving you two classics.

These are storytelling podcasts. The stories are all true. They are dark and historic, though often little known tales that are presented in a lovely yet spooky way.

Cabinet of CuriositiesThe “Cabinet of Curiosities” episodes are short (under 15 minutes, usually) and contain two stories each, that are related in some way. They’re not scary, just interesting and often they have a little twist at the end. I love to listen to these as I drift off to sleep but just need something to fill my brain so it will stop talking to me.

LoreI’ve been listening to “Lore” for so long I don’t even remember how I heard about it. I’m guessing that it was recommended to me on Podbean (they have a great recommendation system). Lore is made up of episodes that tackle more in-depth folklore (still these remain under 30 minutes usually, but it’s one story per episode) and is a little more dark and spooky. This one gives a little more explanation of the stories and how they came to be legends.

They’re both produced, written, and read by Aaron Mahnke

One BONUS for Lore…the music is absolutely beautiful. It’s all written and performed by Chad Lawson. I sometimes just listen to Chad’s music to sleep. It’s so lovely.

So there you have it, actually a THREE-for-one!

What are some of your favorites spooky podcasts?! Drop yours in the comments. They might be ones I’ll be featuring soon.

Record Club

Remember a few weeks ago (or was it months now, who can tell?) when I recommended the podcast, Mortified? Well, I stumbled upon the musical version of this. No, not in that embarrassing teen issues are done in musical form, though I’d totally be here for that. Someone, please do this!

But this is a storytelling podcast that takes an iconic album and then has guests talk about what that album meant to them.
I love this because music to me has never been like “oh that chord progression, oh that bridge harkens back to…” I’m not that musically savvy. For me, it’s simply how it makes me feel and what was happening in my life when I heard it. If this is you too, please check out this podcast. I think you’ll like it.

Note: I discovered this one a while back, but at the time they only had a few episodes so I wanted to wait until there were more so you could binge it.

This is the closest I could find to a “home” page for them. With much searching I do not see a website, Facebook, or Instagram for them. But you can listen here:

Meet my new best friend, Lauren Ash*.

Do you watch Superstore? Do you know the character Dina? THAT”s her, and she’s awesome.

The tagline is “the podcast about oversharing” and it sure delivers. This is one of those shows where you listen and feel like you’re sitting in the room chatting with friends.

Her guests are often people she knows, but occasionally she invites people that she knows of, but doesn’t know personally yet and it’s fun to ‘watch’ them become friends.

Each episode has a theme, like Middle School Traumas, Pet Owner Fails, Hellish Holidays, etc.

She’s just the coolest. She talks fast, loves Prosecco and is hilarious.

*I know I can’t be best friends with her because her bestie is Leslie Seiler, but a gal can dream.

Bloody Murder is both true crime and comedy. Join hosts Tara Sariban and Barney Black as they cover murder stories with humor and their great Australian accents.

They cover Australian cases mostly, but they do also cover other cases from around the world. I like it because these are generally cases I’ve never heard of before.

This isn’t laugh-a-minute funny, (not that it should be) because they’re really telling the stories, but they do interject funny stories of their own throughout.

This one is a little wacky and I love it. The premise is that in each episode an inanimate object is interviewed about their experiences. The interviewer (and producer) is Ian Chillag and he’s great.

If you ever wanted to know how a can of pop (soda, for you non-mid-westerners) feels when it sits forgotten in the back of the fridge, this is for you.

I’m one of those empaths who feels like everything has feelings even if it’s not alive, so this is right up my alley. I have been known to say “excuse me” when I bump into a chair.

Also being a bit of a theater nerd, I love the improvisational feel of it.

Today’s recommendation pays homage to my hometown peeps. Wine and Crime is a true crime podcast featuring three women who “chug wine, chat crime and unleash their worst Minnesotan accents.”

I tangentially know one of the hosts, Amanda, but I didn’t know that when I started listening and became a fan. We have several mutual (real life) friends on Facebook and my guess is we’ve probably drank together at a bar in Minneapolis at some point over the last many years. Oh how I miss those days….anyway…

This one was recommended to me because I love My Favorite Murder. It’s in the same vein, in that it’s hilarious and charming women talking about true crime. But the differences are: There are three of them instead of two. they pick a topic and all three talk about that topic (zoological crimes, state fair crimes, medical malpractice, etc), and they get drunk.

Each week they also feature a wine, sometimes from Winc, my favorite wine club.

Lucy explains the psychological and scientific aspects of each case or topic. Kenyon and Amanda each pick a story to tell.

I actually went to see them live a couple of years ago and the show was really fun. That night I also learned that I will never again attend a show in Downtown Minneapolis after dark without a bodyguard. I don’t want to end up a featured victim on the podcast. But that’s a story for another time.

They have a gazillion episodes so if you like it, you have plenty to explore.

Favorite episodes:
138: Crimes solved by Animals.
82: State Fair Crimes
9: Lucky Bastards

This one is another voyeur-type podcast. And I’m HERE for it!

The premise is that people offer up their stories (anonymously) about their deepest secrets that no one in their lives know (or at least only a few know) and spill the tea with host Ben Hamm.

Some of the secrets have been:

*a secret tattoo

*a man actually killed his mother and the family thought she died naturally

*a secret fling with a spouse’s bestie

*how someone faked their way to a college degree

*a boy who (illegally) traveled to the US to make it in Hollywood.

…and so much more. Find The Secret Room on all your favorite podcasting apps.

Pro-tip: if you become a Patron on Patreon you get access to behind the scenes stuff and in-depth interviews that didn’t make it to the main feed.

This recommendation isn’t going to be for everyone. But I’m really trying not to do all True Crime, LOL.

Come to think of it, one might consider this crime. Anyway, the Rabbit Hole is about how the YouTube algorithm (suggesting or auto-playing videos that it thinks you will like based on the one you’re watching) is forming people’s world views. It’s actually pretty terrifying. This is not a deep dive, but if you’re not totally familiar with this phenomenon this is a good place to start.

Today’s recommendation is The Mortified Podcast. I haven’t recommended a flat out comedy one yet and this one fills the bill.

It’s made up of recordings of people sharing their inner most (usually teen) thoughts. Folks read from their diaries; the sweet and the squishy, uncomfortable stuff. They sometimes have “famous” folks on too, like Bill Burnham, Elijah Wood, Busy Phillips, and Phoebe Judge.

This is the description on their site:

Witness adults sharing their most embarrassing childhood artifacts (journals, letters, poems, lyrics, plays, home movies, art) with others, in order to reveal stories about their lives.

Recommended if you ever wanted to read your sibling’s diary or just get into your childhood friend’s brain. Or if you just want to laugh.
Note there is some adult language here.

Some of my favorite episodes:

04: Jimmy: Throw in the Towel
115: The Only Living Lesbian on Love Island
141: Camp Buy Me Love
151:Confessions of a Catholic School Girl

Let me know what you think! Or suggest your current favorite in the comments.

I’ve been thinking about podcast recommendations lately and there are just so many good ones. Hopefully, I will get to all my favorites. But I’m also trying to rotate between my favorite genres: True Crime, Interviews, Horror, Radio Drama, Self-help/Education, Lifestyle, Sleep help, Paranormal, and Comedy. It might be easier to list the genres I am not into. Anyway, I’m trying to balance it all out.

So it looks like we’re due for a Radio Drama. So today I recommend to you, The Truth. I just listened to the two most recent episodes this morning and they were both very good! But I’ve heard them all. This is one of the few podcasts that I am up to date on and look forward to the new releases.
This podcast is a collection of short fictional stories, performed by a reoccurring group of actors. Most of the stories are written by the same talented group of people.

This week I’m going to recommend the podcast, Code Switch. It’s published by NPR. I feel more and more these days like I need to educate myself. I know there are books to read but I’m more of a listener (I need to multi-task and when I’m reading a book I can’t do much else) so podcasts are a good way for me to soak up knowledge.

I subscribed to this one a year or so ago on a recommendation, but I had trouble getting into it. Today I listened to three episodes and I really like it.
There are several hosts that rotate through the episodes.

Their site described them as such:

Remember when folks used to talk about being “post-racial”? Well, we’re definitely not that. We’re a multi-racial, multi-generational team of journalists fascinated by the overlapping themes of race, ethnicity and culture, how they play out in our lives and communities, and how all of this is shifting.

Where's Lisa podcast
Here’s the description:
On a long weekend in the summer of 2002, Lisa Marie Young went out to celebrate a friend’s birthday. There were big changes ahead; a move to a new apartment, a fresh start on a career with big dreams of becoming a sportscaster. But that night, Lisa got into a red jaguar with a young man from a prominent family and was never seen again. People who live in Lisa’s hometown believe they know who is responsible for her disappearance. Producer Laura Palmer explores the tragic real life tale behind an urban legend haunting a small island community.

I hope those responsible for her death (and any cover ups) are held accountable.

My intention was to recommend a podcast every Saturday, but my city has been a little (a lot) unsettled this past week and my mind and energy has been elsewhere.

Kind World logo

I had a recommended podcast picked out, but after the last few says I decided I wanted to share something a little more healing, a little more uplifting. So today I bring you, A Kind World.

This podcast is wonderful for a lot of reasons. It’s stories about people being kind to one another, but each episode is also pretty short (under 10 minutes mostly), so you don’t need to carve out an hour or more to listen. I like to download a bunch of these and then intersperse them in my playlist so I get a little taste of kindness in between the other stuff I listen to (which let’s face it, can be brutal at times). It’s done with the host narrating, and interspersed with sound bites from the people in the story.

The hosts are Andrea Asuaje and Yasmin Amer and they’re both just lovely.

Andrea Asuaje and Yasmin Amer

A few recent episodes are about the pandemic, but now that there’s all this other unrest I imagine the upcoming episodes may center around that.

Some topics:

A woman whose husband drowned in the ocean and the strangers around her that got her through it.

A little girl who wrote a letter to her postal carrier just to tell him she appreciated him (and his reaction).

A couple who were homeless and rebuilt their lives and community with tiny houses.

And so many more wonderful stories. This is one of my favorites:  [A Woman Retraces Her Grandmother’s Story Of Survival And Escape From The Nazis]

Check it out here: Kind World or just search “Kind World” in whatever podcast platform you like. Let me know if you like it, even if you’re already a fan!

As you may know, I called this blog Collected Sounds because I listened to so much music that I called it ‘collecting sounds in my ears’ after hearing the Dar Williams song where she says that, or a paraphrase of that. Well some of the other sounds I collect are podcasts. It all started for me when I was slightly obsessed with the documentary, The Jinx. I couldn’t get enough! I read an article that said something to the effect of, ‘if you’re looking for more true crime check out this podcast’ and it pointed me toward Serial. I listened and became not only obsessed with Adnan Syed’s case, but all true crime podcasts.

I dare say that podcasts might be a good part of the reason I stopped listening to music as much as I did. I mean I can multi-task like crazy, but I can’t listen to two things at once.

So while this site is definitely aimed at music, I’m going to be making some podcast recommendations here as well and invite you to join in and add yours or comment with your experience with the one I’m recommending. Maybe you didn’t like it and would like to let us know why. Maybe you also love it, or have a similar recommendation.

So I’m going to start with…My Favorite Murder. After I listened to Serial (twice #nerdalert) I watched The Staircase on Amazon Prime. I am still VERY interested in this case (#teamowl) and try to read, listen to, watch anything I can get my hands on that mentions it.
Well when My Favorite Murder was recommended to me via Podbean (the app I used at the time) I tried it and immediately loved Karen and Georgia. And not just because they referenced The Staircase and the death of Kathleen Peterson in the first episode.

My Favorite MurderI love the way Karen and Georgia play off each other and they’re both hilarious. They cover really interesting stories in an entertaining way. Some argue that they don’t do very goo research and “just read Wikipedia” but I don’t care. If I’m really curious about the case I’ll research it on my own or listen to another podcast about it whose focus isn’t to make me laugh. I am a proud Murderino to this day! Shout out to Karen, Georgia, STEVEN and all the other Murderinos.

There was a time a year or so ago when I felt the episodes were a little stale and forced. I got the impression that there was some discomfort between the ladies and it just wasn’t as fun to listen. I think they lost a lot of fans at that time. But those who stuck with them are richly rewarded. So if you left before, give them another shot.

Another thing I love about the podcast is the community it created. I am currently in a ton of MFM related groups made up of Murderinos (that’s what the fans call themselves) and focused on a HUGE variety of topics like cooking, drinking, pets, fans of streaming services (where we discuss our favorite shows and movies) even Microsoft excel nerds, and people with curly hair. This is only the tip of the iceberg. It’s not hyperbole for me to say that there’s probably a MFM group for everything.

Anyway, I encourage you to check out My Favorite Murder if you are not already a Murderino. While true crime is my favorite genre, I will not always be suggesting true crime podcasts. I am currently subscribed to almost 150 different podcasts so I will have recommendations from many other genres.

Stay Sexy and Listen to cool podcasts.
