Today’s Artist Recommendation is Matthew Sweet!

I’ve been a fan of Matthew Sweet since I heard the song “Girlfriend” off the album of the same name.

Matthew Sweet with guitar, seated

That album was my soundtrack for that whole year it came out. My husband and my bestie both loved it too so we would go see him in concert together often. We have great memories of those shows. Even the one where Matt got food poisoning and had to leave the stage to barf, only to pop back on stage and play another song. What a trouper! His shows are always great.

So I was very pleasantly surprised last week when I got a notification on Facebook that he had just started a livestream from his home. I clicked over and was immediately transported to First Avenue in the 90s. His songs are so comforting to me. His banter was great too. He just seems like such an awesome human.

I’m usually not one to appreciate a guitar or bass line, but with his music, I honestly do appreciate the composition and great guitar playing on his songs. He really rocks!

He’s a beautiful songwriter too. Some of his songs remind me of The Carpenters (“If Time Permits”, for example), while others he shreds like Hendrix (“Sick of Myself”). He’s just so amazing. In one of my favorites, “Thunderstorm” there’s a line, “…and nothing is wrong when it rains, even from my eyes” *sigh*

In doing some research for this feature, I realized that there is not only one volume of Under the Covers, a cover album he did with Susanna Hoffs, but there are THREE!! Vol. 3 is 80s music (my heart). It has covers of “Save it for Later” (English Beat), “Kid” (Pretenders) and “Killing Moon” (Echo and the Bunnyman) for starters. I’m super excited to have found this!

As luck would have it, he also has a new album coming out on the 15th called CatsPaw. You can pre-order it now (and listen to three songs from it right away)

If you are not already a fan of Matthew Sweet, I really recommend checking him out.

Some of my favorite songs:
Girlfriend ( Girlfriend. If I’m being honest, ALL the songs on that one)
Sick of Myself (100% Fun)
Time Capsule (Altered Beast)
Thunderstorm (In Reverse) – this one is epic. It has movements!
Trust me, I had to stop or I would just list them all.

Musician Jax
Jackie Miskanic, known professionally as Jax, is an American singer from East Brunswick, New Jersey. She finished third on the fourteenth season of American Idol. (Wikipedia)

So let me preface this by saying I’m an ‘Old’. I resisted TikTok because when it started, it was marketed to me so heavily through my language learning app (Duolingo) and I found it stupid. I even complained about it on Facebook saying “Stop trying to make TikTok happen! It’s just annoying!” and the comments I got were mostly “what is TikTok?” and “I don’t get those ads, they must be targeting you for some reason”.

Then a certain someone who shall not be named started hating on it, and I thought, that’s good enough for me; I will check it out. And now I’m hooked. I am especially loving all the posts from doctors, chiropractors, nurses, and psychologists with their tips and stuff (see, I told you I’m old). I’ve actually realized that I likely have ADHD though it was never diagnosed. But that’s not why you’re here…

One day while I was scrolling through all the medical posts I happened upon this loveliness. A cute young lady was playing the piano and singing a silly parody song. I just loved her voice. I believe it was THIS ONE

She writes a lot of short songs from people’s point of view that we maybe haven’t heard: “Bohemian Rhapsody” from “mama’s” perspective; a parody of the old Fountains of Wayne song, “Stacy’s Mom” from the mom’s POV. Very clever.

For a bit, she asked people to comment with their friend’s name or a song prompt and she’d write a song about them. It was really cute.

She doesn’t just do parodies or song prompts though. She has some great full songs. “Bitchcraft” could easily be on the radio. When she posted it on TikTok she said: “Wrote a song called bitchcraft when my best friend’s boyfriend cheated on her. Hope he hears it “

Some of my favorite Jax songs:
“Papercuts” gives me Sia vibes.
“Come Home To Me” (on TikTok)
“Ring Pop” (on TikTok)
“Teenage Dirtbag” – this is with Post Modern Jukebox

I hope you check her out, follow her, etc.

Before you come at me, hear me out…
Taylor Swift
I wouldn’t say I was ever anti-Taytay, I just wasn’t a fan. I basically don’t care for 99% of country music so I never really paid attention to her. Then I heard her song “Mean”. For some reason it really hit me. I wasn’t really bullied as a kid, so it wasn’t that. But it made me feel for those who have been and I suppose for her as well, since I assume it’s autobiographical. I loved that song so much I bought the album, Speak Now. I think there was some kind of digital deal where her albums were $5 a pop or something and I think I bought most of them. I just put them in my rotation and didn’t think all that much about it, but was always surprised when I’d hear a song I liked and when I checked it was her. So I had to admit I was a fan. I mean, not on the scale of her actual fans, but I admire her, and I had to admit she’s the real deal.

Once she broke out of country music I liked her even more. Then I saw her documentary, Miss Americana. SOLD. I just love everything about her.

I love her humility, she’s on Tiny Desk Concerts, which I would think she’s too “big” for, and she seems genuinely honored to be invited and equally surprised that a lot of people wanted to show up to the space to see her. I’m sure there were 8 million people on the edge of madness because they DIDN’T get in, but it’s cute that she pretends she’s not that big of a deal.

This year she put out Folklore and it’s filled with gorgeous folk songs and I couldn’t be happier. I actually PRE ordered it. There’s a documentary special on Disney+ right now about the making of this album. I watched it the other day and I was mesmerized (barely even played on my phone), brought to tears, soothed, and charmed. I loved listening to her talk about the making of the songs, the recording of it, (virtually, since it was after the Pandemic hit), and hearing her and two of the writers (one is from The National) play them together for the first time. It’s a great doc if you can access it. I had a trailer all queued up for you, but NBC took it down. Here’s a video of “Exile”. Hopefully, that won’t be removed.

I started writing this on December 9th. On the morning of the 10th, I got the news that she was releasing a surprise new album! She is calling the sister to Folklore, called Evermore. So of course I ordered it and listened right away (well, OK not RIGHT away, I didn’t stay up until midnight to hear it. I’m old.)

It’s equally as good as Folklore. She’s got The National’s Aaron Dessner on board again and I really can hear his influence in these songs, especially in Coney Island (honestly, I didn’t even see the name of the song or that The National was on this one, LOL). She’s got HAIM guesting on a song and Bon Iver (Justin Vernon) is back too.

I really wonder what her long time fans think of this shift in her. I for one, am here for it. If you’re a lifer Taylor fan, let me know your thoughts about her evolution.

Some of my favorite songs:
“Mean” (Speak Now)
“The Man” (Lover)
“Death by a Thousand Cuts” (Lover)
“You Need to Calm Down” (Lover)
“Welcome to New York” (1989)
“The 1” (Folklore)
“Exile” with Bon Iver is amazing and heartbreaking (Folklore)
“My Tears Ricochet” made me cry. (Folklore)
Willow (Evermore)
..I’m sure there will be more Evermore songs the more I get to hear it.

I “met” Gregory online about a million years ago when he wrote to me and gave me a very heartfelt and convincing argument for why I might want to feature him on a ‘women in music’ site (Collected Sounds featured only women back then). It was a sweet, and funny email and I immediately loved him. What a relief when I got his music and fell in love with that as well.

Not only did I feature him, but he came to our house to play a house concert. A few of them over the years, in fact! Each one a special, fun night filled with amazing music and great friends. And one not-so-great friend who got drunk and kept shouting “Play __**!” over and over again. We had a good laugh once the friend passed out. Oh, I miss those times. (**I don’t remember the song, it might have been “Freebird”)

I’m listening to Gregory’s music again today and realize that even though I am on his mailing list (and read all the emails) I somehow missed that he has an album I still don’t have yet. So, I’m listening to that as I write this. Sometimes I space on an artist and forget to listen to them on the regular. I regret that I did that here. A week or so ago he did a Livestream which I “attended” and realized how much I’d missed his music in my life. So, I made sure all of his albums are on my rotation playlists (I honestly don’t know why I missed some before).

I also realized he has a Patreon account so I am now supporting him there, I suggest you do the same!

Gregory not only produces beautiful music, but he has also developed some workshops. One of them is called Create Your Own Opportunity and it’s THIS coming weekend! Click on the name to register. It’s Sun, December 13, 2020, at 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM CST

Some of my favorite songs:
“I Wanted to Run” (Pseudo-Rotary)
“Crazy Love” (Stark)
“The Garden” (My Hero, the Enemy)
“Broken Through” (Battler)
“Day of the Battler” (Battler)

…and I think all of Up & Away, honestly they’re all good.

He does some amazing covers as well (Florence + the Machine, Adele, Brandi Carlile, etc.)

I hope you check him out, follow him, etc.

Laura Marling

Laura Marling was recommended to me by a relative who is a big fan. She knew what kind of music I liked and knew I’d like Laura too. I listened to a couple of songs, thought it was pretty, filed it away, and went on a trip to Scotland.  This was in 2008.

While in Edinburgh we walked into a gritty bar (which ended up being our favorite place, Bannerman’s) and there was a poster on the wall for an upcoming concert headlining, Laura Marling! I took a picture of the poster to remind me to buy some of her music. The concert was to take place after our vacation was over. So, I wasn’t able to see her live.

Fast forward to when I bought her album A Creature I Don’t Know and played it almost obsessively.

It was my car go-to for about 6 months on my way to and from a job I hated. So sometimes those songs would take me back there, and it was hard to listen. But I had to just play it over and over again while in a good place, to kill those demons. Tell me I’m not the only one who does this.

In April of this year (2020) she released Song for Our Daughter which was recently nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Folk Album.

Her voice is mesmerizing and the melodies dreamy.

If you need some soothing for your soul, this is one place to look.

Some of my favorite songs:

Don’t Ask Me Why (Creature I Don’t Know)

I Was an Eagle (Once I Was an Eagle)

You Know (Once I Was an Eagle)

Blow By Blow (Song for Our Daughter)

Fortune (Song for Our Daughter)

Rambling Man (I Speak Because I Can)

I hope you check her out, follow her, etc.

Meg Myers
Meg is another one of my E-music discoveries way back in 2013. Her album Daughter in the Choir was recommended to me and I loved it. She’s been in my rotation playlists ever since. She continues to put out amazing music.

She was born Janice Sue Meghan Myers in Tennessee (which she sings about in “Tennessee” on Daughter in the Choir). She was raised as Jehovah’s Witness and I’ve got to believe that breaking free from that must be at least part of the reason for the intensity of her music.

Her voice is fierce and dynamic. Her music is filled with strong beats and interesting melodies. Her tunes don’t go where you’d expect, most of the time.

Some of my favorite songs:

Running Up That Hill (Kate Bush Cover 2018 – single)

Desire (Sorry)

Take Me to the Disco (Take Me to the Disco)

Make a Shadow (Make a Shadow)

Monster, Adelaide (Daughter in the Choir–Actually I love everything from this record as it’s the one I’ve listened to the longest)

I hope you check her out, follow her, etc. I find it quite entertaining that on Instagram while she has over 76,000 followers but she only follows 2 people. Enya and herself, 😀

She was first reviewed by Collected Sounds contributor, Anna Maria back in 2002 for her album, Cocooned, and contributor Digman interviewed her in 2002

I reviewed her album A Perfect Dream in late 2005 and the songs are still on my rotation. I called it “atmospheric and ambient, but you’ll find dabs of jazz, blues, rock, cabaret, and pop too.” While she has dabbled with different styles, everything she does has the Fimm stamp on it.

*Sigh* what can I say about Lex? She’s simply amazing. She has a wonderful and unique voice, she writes incredible, sometimes heartbreaking, songs and she’s a beautiful soul.

I’ve been listening to her since she sent me her album, Orange Days on Lemon Street back in 2009. I loved it and it was my favorite album that year.

When I took a bit of a break from music and didn’t listen to as much stuff, she was still in my rotation (this mainly means the USB stick that I would keep in my car to play when I drove). But it wasn’t until the lockdown when I had free time again, that I found that she was doing a livestream every Friday morning. I started watching it and interacting with her and her very cool fans. It’s one of my favorite parts of the week!

Lex is a very generous artist with her fans. I support her on Patreon and I recommend you do the same. She puts out something new at least weekly if not daily. Seriously, this woman works so hard! She is currently reading Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein as an audiobook for her Patrons. It’s wonderful!

She also does frequent Twitch parties (yes, she got this old lady into Twitch!) in which we, her fans, get to interact with each other and with her, request songs, etc. It’s like the Facebook streams except cooler. She has a beautiful jazzy voice and I just swoon to hear her do the old songs. When I say “old” I don’t mean the 80s, I am talking 1930s and 40s. I mean, my 87-year-old mother is a huge fan as well. Lex is an old soul and it shows.

I thought it fitting to end my favorite month of the year by featuring one of my favorite artists (who also loves this time of year)! I hope you’ll join one of her live streams! Once you do, she will offer you a bunch of free music (I told you she was generous!). Hope to see you on Friday at 10:30am on Facebook!

Today’s Recommendation is Ane Brun

She was born Ane Kvien Brunvoll in 1976 in Molde Norway. I recently learned I’d been saying her name wrong for years. I was saying it like the American “Anne” but according to Google’s pronunciation, it would be “Ahhn-NEH” in Swedish with an accent on the second syllable. At least I think I got the Brun part right (Broon). If any of you speak Swedish/Norweigian, please correct me if I’m wrong!

I discovered Ane Brun so many years ago that I don’t even remember how. But I think it was probably e-music. I was a huge fan of that site when it started. I discovered so much NEW good music. They had a really good algorithm that recommended things that I really loved. At any rate, I still listen to her music at least every week, if not every day. Even more than Sarah McLachlan (GASP!)

I brought her album Changing of the Seasons with me when I went on a music festival cruise. It helped me through a few panicked nights (being in the middle of the ocean with no way out, turns out, is panic-inducing to me).

Her voice is a balm for my soul and is so unique and beautiful. Her lyrics are stunning and powerful, and her songs are so gorgeously composed. I tend to prefer her quiet songs, but she has some fun rocking ones too.

Her album, Leave Me Breathless is made up of covers and they’re really good. Her version of “Always on My Mind” brings me to tears.

If you’re not already a fan, I assume it’s because you haven’t heard her yet. Check out her new song, Crumbs from her upcoming album of the same name.

Some of my favorite songs:
“The Puzzle” (Changing of the Seasons)
“Temporary Dive” is a beautiful song about depression (A Temporary Dive)
“Treehouse Song” (Changing of the Seasons)
“Changing of the Seasons” (Changing of the Seasons)
“Worship” (It All Starts with One)

This week’s recommendation is Alex Wong. I’ve known Alex for a long time and have been a fan since I heard the first note. This was back in 2007 when Alex was on tour with Vienna Teng and they played some shows at our home. Yes, we used to do house concerts. We retired from that, only to come back for a revival in 2017 with Alex again (this time with Megan Slankard, who also joined him for our 2018 concert).

Alex has done TONS of work with other musicians. Aside from The Paper Raincoat, he was in a band called The Animators (those albums are great too) and has done numerous projects with other musicians.

When I first fell for Alex’s music he was in a duo called The Paper Raincoat with Amber Rubarth. I’m not kidding when I say that is a DAMN near-perfect album. Every song on there could be a huge hit. If only it got enough recognition.

I’ve been following him throughout his whole journey. I even went on a music festival cruise just so I could see him and Vienna play. I am not really sure how to describe his because other than beautiful and transportive. His songs are so exquisitely composed with so many sounds, instruments, feelings. Ugh, I know that’s not a great description but I want you to listen to him either way. So please follow the links provided.

Alex is also a producer and he takes that role quite seriously. I’m not kidding when I say he carefully crafts every second that makes it to the final product. I’m following him on Patreon and he has a series for his Patrons where we join him on Zoom and he explains how he creates a song, from concept to finish. He calls it Cooking Records because….oh yeah, not only is he a brilliant musician, and beautiful soul, but he’s a chef! I mean, staaaaph already! He created a concept where he invites people into his home and makes homemade meals for them. I just can’t. *sigh*

Plus I’m in love with his dog, Charlotte.

Alex Wong and his dog Charlotte

Some of my favorite songs: I’m going to try really hard not to name every single song…
“In the Creases” (duet with Amber Rubarth on Elephant and the Seahorse and The Paper Raincoat)
“The Quiet Voice” (Elephant and the Seahorse)
“Brooklyn Blurs” (with and on The Paper Raincoat)
“Wherever You Are” (Elephant and the Seahorse)
“Show Yourself” (Elephant and the Seahorse)

If you watch the video for this amazing song, you will see yours truly! It was a project he did with his Patreon fans, asking them to film themselves holding signs with their assigned lyrics. It was super fun and what an amazing song. Very timely!!

Wherever you are (Char is in this one)

Her music is very eclectic. It can be soft and pretty, or loud and aggressive. But always creative and interesting and amazing.
I really don’t know how else to describe her style. It’s not like anyone else, in my opinion.

Some of my favorite songs:
“The Kingdom” remains my favorite (Hunting My Dress)
“Murder of Birds” is another great one (Hunting my Dress)
“Out the Backdoor is fun” (Kismet)
“Shouldered” (Stonechild)
“Fear of Father” (Stonechild)

Today’s Recommendation is Hannah Fury.

I first learned of Hannah Fury in 2003 when she sent me her album, The Thing That Feels. I reviewed it, and called it “a thing of beauty” and “dark and beautiful”. The album made it to my Best of 2003 list (even tho it was released before that, I based my lists on when I heard the music).

Hannah writes, performs, engineers, and produces all of her recordings. Her music is rhythmic, eerie, dreamy, spooky, and beautiful.

She recently released two “EP”s on Bandcamp and I just got them both. I’m happy to say that 17 years later, she’s still got it.

She recently suffered a great personal loss. In true artist fashion, has funneled this into music that she has put up on Bandcamp for free (or a donation). Please check it out.

This week’s featured artist is Liza Anne. I discovered her many years ago and really love her music. She has a new record out now too! Click for full story, photo, links. etc.

Liza Anne was born Elizabeth Anne Odachowski and is originally from the state of Georgia.

It’s been quite a while since I first heard her music. I have her album, The Colder Months, which came out in 2014. So I no longer remember how I found her.
My guess is Amazon Music or Spotify. But at any rate, I’m glad I listened when she was new and that I’ve remained on her mailing list and connected on social media because I was aware when she released her newest album, Bad Vacation. It’s a good one!

I really can’t find much info on her personal life online. The “bio” on her site is a blurb about her new record, as opposed to a biography. So if you want to know more about her, I suggest following her on Instagram. She’s quite candid.

I could go on about her style, trying to describe it, and comparing her to other artists, but honestly, it’s better if you just listen for yourself. She’s amazing!

A few stand out songs for me, and the albums they are from:
“I Am Not in Love Anymore” – The Colder Months
“Devotion” (sort of an 80s feel) – Bad Vacation
“Thin Ice” – Bad Vacation
“Ocean” – Two
“The Colder Months” – The Colder Months

Sophie Payten (her given name) according to Wikipedia “worked at Prince of Wales Hospital as a doctor, after completing her medical studies at The University of New South Wales in 2018.” Yes, a doctor.

I discovered Gordi through the feature on Amazon music called My Discovery Mix. It just plays songs it thinks you will like and I have to say their algorithms are pretty spot on. It was first playing stuff from her 2017 release, Reservoir (I don’t recall which song) but I liked it enough to make a note to check out her other music.

I think I like her new album, Our Two Skins even better. “Aeroplane Bathroom” is really pretty. Her sound is sort of echoey, ethereal. There are some nice harmonies and cool melodies. Some of the songs have a bit of an 80s feel (my heart). I guess it’s the guitars. Anyway, I really hope you check out her music. Like, subscribe, stream, buy the album, etc.

Overcoats is a New York-based electronic-pop duo consisting of singer-songwriters Hana Elion and JJ Mitchell. They met on their first day of freshman year at Wesleyan University where they sat next to each other in an ‘Intro to Anthropology’ class. Their debut album, YOUNG, was released in 2017. Their latest album, The Fight came out in March of 2020.

When asked to describe their music the answer is: “It’s like Radiohead, but cool.”
I don’t know if Radiohead is what I think of when I hear them, but what I do hear are beautiful voices harmonizing wonderfully together. Think First Aid Kit without the country twang, maybe a titch of HAIM thrown in. The first song I heard of theirs was Leave the Light On and it remains one of my favorites.

When asked what is their favorite city to play in, they say: “We love all the cities equally. (Minneapolis)”. I hope someday to see them play here if the world ever opens up and it’s safe to go downtown again.

Here’s a cool article about them from American Songwriter magazine

However, my Alexa pronounces it: KAHTZ-en-yahmmah – which appears to be the German pronunciation. In German, it means Cats Wail (or Caterwaul)

Per Wikipedia: “Katzenjammer was an English-language Norwegian band from Oslo, formed in 2005. The band consists of Anne Marit Bergheim, Solveig Heilo and Turid Jørgensen. Former band member Marianne Sveen left the band in the beginning of 2016.”

The band Katzenjammer is not a NEW discovery but when you abandon your blog for 15 years you discover artists the whole time, without posting about them. You will hear them if you listen to my Amazon music playlist, Ladies Night. Linked over there —>

Even though they’re no longer active, I wanted to feature them because I still listen to their music on a regular basis.

I discovered this group around 2008 when a music friend (from the old Ecto mailing list) who lives in Norway suggested it to me. I was immediately smitten. The first song I heard was “Ain’t No Thang” and I saw the video. I just wanted to be in that boat with them singing and having a grand old time.

Watch video

So I searched out their other stuff and I’m happy to report that it’s all amazing. I particularly like this video for A Bar In Amsterdam. Their “regular” videos are great too, but they’re definitely a LIVE type band so watching them on stage is a treat.

I’m still amazed that they didn’t get super popular here in the US. I’m convinced that it’s just that they don’t have the right exposure. Go listen and if you like them, spread the word! However, I don’t know how much good it will do since they’re not still active.

Lotte KestnerThis is by no means a new artist. You might remember a band called Trespassers William from way back in the late 90s-early 00s.

I was obsessed with their 2002 release, Different Stars. It was so beautiful and calming. I went through a period many years later where I had pretty bad panic attacks. One of the only ways to shake myself out of them was to listen to songs from that album. So I made sure to always have it with me (on my phone) so I could pop in those earbuds and calm myself.

Well, part of what made that music so amazing was the voice of the lead singer, Anna-Lynne Williams.

Flash forward to about 2008 and Anna-Lynne is now known by her stage name, Lotte Kestner. I remember hearing that was still making music and being so relieved! I wanted to be sure you all knew about her too.

She recently released an album called Covers, Vol. 2 – Listen on Spotify. She covers Catherine Wheel!

I first discovered Samantha Crain back in 2012 when I went on the Cayamo Cruise. Which is a whole other story for another time. I “studied” ahead of time buying all her released music so that I would be familiar with it when I got on the cruise.

I’d describe it as dirgy, folk/bluegrass and it’s so so good. Think, like dark Americana. Her voice is deep and transcendent. I mean, just listen to this!!

Samantha Crain is from Shawnee, Oklahoma and she proudly fills her band with others from her home state.

Well…all this to say, she has a NEW ALBUM OUT on Ramseur Records.
It’s called A Small Death and she says that this is her favorite album of hers in the last fourteen years. What I’ve heard so far is really good (I’m listening right now, as I type).

Wyvern Lingo is an Irish band from Bray, Ireland in County Wicklow. It consists of Caoimhe Barry on vocals and drums, Karen Cowley on vocals, synth, and bass, and Saoirse Duane on vocals and guitar.

Wyvern Lingo

From their website:

Wyvern Lingo have been writing music together since they met at age 11. They originally bonded over hand-me-down albums of Led Zeppelin, Joni Mitchell and Simon & Garfunkel along with the R’n’B of the 90s/00s that then dominated the radio. Their music stitches together this tapestry of influences, all united by their chilling vocal harmonies.

The first I’d heard of them is from Collected Sounds friend/reader Robert Cullen. He sent me a link to their video, Used. It took me a while to listen, partially because I was busy and then I forgot. Oops! But once I listened I was in awe.

The video shows three women standing in a circle facing each other, on what appears to be the middle of a street, and they’re singing a capella. The harmonies are amazing and they all have lovely voices.

I did the YouTube Rabbit Hole thing and listened to some of their other songs. The others have a sort of funky beat, sometimes a bluesy guitar, a little R and B. They’re really lovely.

Cannelle is cinnamon in French. It’s also the name of a great musician. I’ve known Melissa Oliveri personally for a few years now. But recently she started sharing her musical abilities with the world and I wanted to make sure you all know about her and her fun, quirky style!

Melissa Oliveri

Bio:

Melissa Oliveri came to Minneapolis from Montreal, Canada in 2006, bringing with her an eclectic mix of both French- and English- Canadian cultures.

Her diverse influences range from Alternative music like Pixies and PJ Harvey, to French artists like France Gall, Serge Gainsbourg, and Jean Leloup, and women songwriters like Regina Spektor, Imogen Heap, Tori Amos, and Amanda Palmer.

Having experienced an important loss as a child and lived through the grief that ensued, her songs often tug on the heartstrings, but she can also write about everyday life situations from a humorous angle. Whether playing a silly song about her favourite snacks, dreaming about living among palm trees, or softly singing an ode to a departed loved one, her songs will make you feel exactly what she wants you to feel.

Today I chose Jonatha Brooke. Mostly because her concerts are another bright spot in my week! Every Monday she broadcasts from her kitchen for an hour (or so) long concert. She checks the chat and talks to viewers and answers questions. It’s super fun and I love hearing all her songs again. She’s a very engaging performer.

This coming concert, on Monday (June 1) at 2pm central time she will be doing requests and answering questions she didn’t get to in past concerts. Set your reminders to tune into her Instagram or Facebook page to watch. (I prefer Facebook since Instagram cuts off after 1 hour and the layout is funky.)

Instagram
Facebook

Also she is releasing an album of her songs, re-worked, called The Sweetwater Sessions and you can order soon, on her site. It will be released July 10th. Here’s the link to pre-order. I got mine! https://jonathabrooke.com/store

The single, Taste of Danger, is out now and you can hear it if you go to her Facebook page.

See you on Monday!
Note: the pic shown is one I took when she played the Fine Line Music Cafe in Minneapolis. Many years ago.

Nerina Pallot

I plan to highlight one artist per week that I have discovered over the years.

Today’s pick is Nerina Pallot. She’s received a little more notice lately because she reworked the song “Love Will Tear Us Apart” and it appeared on a show called Normal People on Netflix.

I first heard of her back in 2004 when someone suggested to her that she send me her album Fires. I was very smitten. I did a spotlight on her in November of that year, I then did a review of the album which came out in 2005 and landed on my Best of 2005 list.

She’s put out a lot more music since then! But my favorite part is that she does a livestream concert from her home every Thursday (2pm central time). She gets all dressed up and takes requests, answers questions and you might get a cameo from her adorable son, Wolf, too.

Listen to Love Will Tear Us Apart and Subscribe to her YouTube Channel so you can watch the livestream this afternoon!

Little Comets’ new single Isles is out October 18, 2010.

Since leaving their former record label, Columbia, and signing with Dirty Hit Ltd, Little Comets have been busy touring with artists such as Delphic and The Noisettes. They’ve been gaining great radio and TV support for Isles and are continuing their tour of the UK with 20 dates in the next month alone!

They describe the song thusly:

“The song is called ‘Isles’ and I suppose it is just a collection of notes and words that fell out of us when whilst practicing in Gateshead. Like lots of places we’ve travelled to, there a strange disconnect between the people and their environment. Despite the simplification of bleak streets and wild youth, the lyrics can maybe convey the yearning subject matter more accurately.”

You can get a free orchestral MP3 of their song, Isles [here]

Phoenix Hart’s debut album Save Love will be released this October 26th. The 12 track album was produced by Grammy nominee Chris Bell who has worked with artists as diverse and well-known as U2, Destiny’s Child and The Eagles. Save Love is the culmination of two years of recording and live performance which has seen Phoenix garner a loyal following in Texas and beyond. Her unique sound has been inspired by artists such as Sheryl Crow, Neil Young, Feist and Aimee Mann.

Phoenix embraces a wide range of musical styles from country, to pop and recently decided to give her own interpretation of some popular songs.

This weekend a friend of mine asked me about an artist (as in, do you know her?) and it was one I’d not yet heard of. Her name is Soko and she’s French. I guess someone called her the ‘French Lily Allen.’ So I checked out her music yesterday.

I have to say, she sounds nothing like Lily Allen (tho looks like her a little) but she’s cool. She’s more acoustic and soft. She started out as an actress in French films but became a songwriter when he had her heart broken. She currently lives in LA. She sings in English, at least some times.

She’s sold out shows in Denmark, so obviously I’d like her since I think I’m a misplaced Dane. Her Wikipedia page says she quit music in January of 2009 to return to acting. But Here’s hoping we’ll see her again.

The first song I heard was actually a video for “I’ll Kill Her” which is cute and disturbing at the same time. She’s talking about the woman who took her boyfriend away from her, naturally. It’s a cute sweet sounding song, but she’s planning murder.

So what do you think? Most of the other videos I found were fan-made pieces where they put photos over the audio. But at least you can hear them.

I haven’t figured out where to purchase her music yet.
I looked on Emsuic for her and there’s a Soko, but all the reviews say is “This is NOT the French girl.” So there’s another band out there with the same name. Both are shortened versions of their real names (she was born Stephanie Sokolinski but has been called Soko for as long as she can remember).

Here’s her [MySpace] page (she’s still logging in so that’s good)

Artist: Melissa McClelland
Year/Label: 2004 / The Orange Record Label

Review by Amy Lotsberg Producer of Collected Sounds

This post is serving as both a Spotlight, and an Album review.

I first heard of Melissa McClelland from Ecto (a music mailing list I am on). There was some discussion about her being married to Luke Doucet, who played guitar for Sarah McLachlan for many years. I knew this and that she was signed to the same label as Sarah, Nettwerk Records. But since I am usually so flooded with new music that I never have time to seek any out on my own, I never followed up.

Until, that is, I heard she’d be on the Cayamo Cruise. If you don’t already know what Cayamo is go [here]. Once I booked my spot on this cruise, I found it important to get to “know” as many of the artists as possible seeing as I’d be spending 5 days listening to their music. So I downloaded what I could from Emusic and Melissa’s album, Stranded in Suburbia was one of them (also Luke’s but that’s for a later post).

I love this record. It wasn’t an immediate crush for me. It took a few listens. With the exception of Glimpse into Hell, which I loved from the very first guitar note. It’s still my favorite on the album, but I’ve since also fallen for Rooftop, Jaded (in which she uses the F-bomb), Picture Postcard is a cool story song. Blue Farewell too. Beautiful.

There’s also a Bruce Springsteen cover (Factory) which I don’t love. But I didn’t really like the original either. I like The Boss, that’s just not one of his I ever really liked.

Her voice is nice and clear. There’s nothing very unique about it, but it’s lovely. And I love to sing along with these songs….at the top of my lungs…in my car.

I was expecting more mainstream pop or pretty layer-y McLachlan-esque stuff. It’s neither. It’s pop, but it’s more edgy. I can see it played on the radio, but (with the exception of the VERY mainstream title track, aka White Lies) only on really cool stations.

Her shows are one’s I am definitely going to try and catch on the cruise.

Note:I still am not 100% sure how this cruise works. I know I had to sign up for one concert slot per night but I’m guessing there are shows going on all the time that we can go to. If not, if we only get one show a day…I don’t know.

Track Listing
1. Good As Gold
2. White Lies (Stranded In Suburbia)
3. Pretty Blue
4. Jaded
5. Glimpse Into Hell
6. Rooftop
7. Factory
8. Picture Postcard
9. Encinitas Rainstorm
10. Little Birds
11. Blue Farewell
12. Smoke Signals
13. Jaded (Ogilvie/Fu Remix)

After a 4 year hiatus from the music industry, Andrea Florian has put together a sample of 3 new songs. Revisiting her first love, the piano, Andrea’s new works and lyrics reflect some of the introspection of her first recordings, whilst bringing a fresh new perspective to her writing. Produced by longterm friend and musician Lisa Patterson, expect lush production of cello and string sections alongside smooth and simple horn arrangements.

Andrea began playing piano at age five. She recorded her first full length CD at age 21. Self funded and promoted, it generated over 1000 sales within just a few months. In the following 2 1/2 years, Andrea recorded 2 more CD’s, “only human” and “somehurrygood”. A break from recording kept her busy on the road with touring and promoting, landing her several coveted promotional opportunities such as a full length article in NY’s Billboard Magazine, a number of festival showcases, a Factor funded video for her single, “She Said”, several recording and touring grants as well as numerous television appearances in Canada and the US. After coming home from a self booked and promoted tour through Australia, in 2002; an effort that took her through the entire southeast coast and consisted of 25 shows within two weeks, features in major press, TV and street festivals, Andrea joined John Switzer (Jane Siberry, the Waltons) in the studio to complete, “Picture This’, a full length album of her first co-written songs. The album was well received and Andrea set out on tour once again to promote the new songs.

Four years later, Andrea has been devoting her time to writing and spending time with her new family. These three new songs are just a sampling of the many songs still lying in wait to get their turn in the studio. In the next few years, Andrea intends to release several more EP’s of this type, hoping that it will allow her to give more focus to each song, and release more songs more often. We appreciate everyone’s patience these last few years and promise that there is still much more to come!

Tiffany Apan

From the time she was barely walking, Tiffany Apan has been drawn to music. Early on the Wilkes-Barre, PA native was influenced by film musicals such as The King and I, The Sound of Music, My Fair Lady, and West Side Story and the cast recordings of Phantom of the Opera and Les Miserables. She was picking up instruments such as the piano, acoustic guitar, accordion, and violin.

Tiffany began taking dance lessons and gymnastics when she was only three years old and resumed her dance lessons at age six after a fight with a childhood illness. She continued her dance classes throughout grammar school and thoroughly enjoyed performing in the dance recitals. Tiffany’s dance instructor was Kathy Burke, niece of famed dancer/actor Gene Kelly. Throughout the years, she would be trained in classical ballet, tap, jazz, modern, and hip hop. Her vocal abilities were discovered when Tiffany performed a solo song and dance number for a dance recital at age 11. She was then enrolled in voice lessons where she received classical training. Her early love of musicals resurfaced when she began auditioning for and winning roles in various musicals, plays, and operas with some local and regional theatre groups including Oklahoma, The Crucible, The Sound of Music, The Magic Flute, Kiss of the Spider Woman, Macbeth, and others. Favorite roles include Hodel in Fiddler on the Roof, Esmeralda in The Hunchback of Notre Dame, First Witch in Macbeth, and Free Style Jazz Singer in Whispers Want to Holler. She later would meet long time musician, Jason English who would become her collaborator in music.

In December of 2006, Tiffany released her first single, the ethereal and haunting pop ballad, Ghost to the internet which was met with overwhelming positive responses from listeners all over the world. She then released two more tracks. One being a more industrial/goth influenced song entitled “Porcelain Doll.” The other was a symphonic gothic rock song with sort of a funk styled beat titled A Prayer. These songs were also well-received and they would be the base of what would come to be her debut album. Throughout 2007, Tiffany worked with partner, Jason English, on crafting the remaining songs to make her debut album. Tiffany calls Poet a very personal album which chronicles her life from the time she was in junior high up until recently. On February 26, 2008 Tiffany’s debut album Poet was released to the public.

Poet was met with great success from the critics and music fans alike with almost everyone describing Tiffany’s sound as unique drawing from the sounds of symphonic metal, goth, classical music, new age, pop, ethereal, opera, and celtic/world. Poet has so far been gaining recognition within the metal, goth, classical, adult contemporary/pop, alternative/rock, progressive rock, and ambient genres. She is often compared with artists such as Sarah Brightman, Lana Lane, Loreena McKennit, and Tarja Turunen; she has also been called a cross between Sarah Brightman and Lana Lane in more than one review. The singles off of “Poet” have done quite well on music charts throughout the internet and have been featured on radio stations all around the world. Poet has had physical CD and digital sales in the US, Europe, and Australia. Tiffany has also enjoyed features in a few magazines and webzines.

In December of 2008, her first music video off of Poet for the song Run Away and Hide was debuted on New York’s music video program, IndiMusicTV. The video has also been spun on Music Corner TV based out of Croatia and will be featured on The Jay Rossi Project. While the “Run Away and Hide” video receives rotation, the video for the song “Ashes to Dust” is being filmed and is set for a spring release.

Upon completing her 2008 Poet Tour, Tiffany is embarking on a 2009 Poet Tour to support the album. She is also headed back into the studio in the spring of 2009 to begin work on her second album. She has also begun to release her personal artwork (paintings and sketches) to the public and plans to make a return to theatre within the next year or two. Whatever project Tiffany embarks on, she continues to carve out her own genre defying niche.

Taj was the artist spotlight for May 2005

From the errant radio signals wafting over the Caribbean basin came waves of divergent musical styles; from calypso to country and western, rock n roll to rhythm and blues– an eclectic confluence that permeated the air of West Indian life.

In the West Indies of the 1970s, this witches brew of sound formed the soundtrack to the turbulent cultural and social shifts, namely, the nascent Rastafarian movement. Restless youth and the threat of political violence hung like a shadow over such times. From these conflicting and coalescing currents a musical original was born, Taj Weekes.

It has been a musical odyssey that has taken Taj from the shores of the Caribbean to Canada and now to New York City. A magical pilgrimage that has all come together in spellbinding fashion with the release of his first album ‘Hope and Doubt.”

Part lover, part mystic agitator, part aggrieved spokesman; this acute observer of the human carnival has crafted a work that signals a seismic shift in the future of reggae music.

An inspired work of uncommon verve. Audacious and original, it shines like a beacon among the gray of contemporary reggae.

Douglass’ passionate amalgamation of contemporary folk, pop, and rock have been compared to Jeff Buckely, Tori Amos, Peter Gabriel, and Bjork, while he has been equally influenced by his love for underground female singer/songwriters.

His intense, high energy performances either as a solo acoustic artist or with his full band are consistently solid. The winner of the 2003 GrammyFest in New York City, he currently plays at clubs, festivals, and on campuses throughout the U.S., and was the inaugural performer on the American Red Cross 2003 “Save A Life Tour”.

He is an active juried artist on the Vermont Arts Council, har toured with They Might Be Giants, and been co-billed with Tracy Chapman, Third Eye Blind, Melissa Ferrick, Martin Sexton, and Michelle Branch to name a few.

Ethereal gothic singer-songwriter, composer and fantasy illustrator born in the Canary Islands and now living in Barcelona (Spain). A world of fantasy: dark fairy tales, romantic ghost stories, and “other creatures” that dwell in the boundaries between dream and awareness inspired by her personal experience with sleep paralysis, night horrors and hypnagogia… old fears and passions… ancient shadows…

Her debut album, Ancient Shadows is a collection of 19 illustrated song-tales that take you to a ride through the haunting and spectral realm she creates with her sorrowful eerie but sensuous music, led by an angelic and silky voice that invites you to shed your own cultivated defences. Wistful, evocative, pure and meaningful.

Priscilla studied Molecular Biology but now her life is devoted to illustration and music. Her drawings and paintings, just like the songs, are inspired by old fairy books and gothic literature: haunted houses, mourning willows, nymphs, vengeful fairies, ghosts fluttering like moths around the living… A world of spectral romance and intense melancholia. Also, her personal experience with sleep paralysis, night horrors and hypnagogia is a constant influence in her lyrics.

With a remarkable success in internet, Priscilla’s dedicated fan base continues to multiply. After declining a wealth of record deals, including majors, just to remain true to the spirit of her music, Priscilla founded YIDNETH, her own record label and publishing company that takes name from her illustrated book project. She also created, along with the spanish composer Héctor Corcín, Nuevas Músicas (nuevasmusicas.org), a platform for the promotion of independent artists in Spain in genres like hers. She has been aired in several spanish national television channels, featured in countless specialized magazines and media and also played in radio stations all over the world. As a songwriter and vocalist she’s participated in several published cds and soundtracks and also have performed in some european emerging talent festivals.

Often compared to Tori Amos. Kate Bush and Enya, Priscilla claims to be nourished by Tears for Fears (Orzábal lyrics), Cocteau Twins and most importantly her fascination for film scores and soundtracks. Still she truly carves out an original image for herself and is more than the sum total of her music influences creating an unique and personal soundscape that is difficult to put a finger on or describe.

Halie Loren

When Halie Loren was 4 years old, her parents heard her singing along to her sister’s walkman from the other room and looked at each other in total amazement. Was that incredible voice coming out of their ‘little’ girl? It was, and it still is. Today this 22 year-old alternative singer/songwriter is already carving out a unique musical niche with her jazz-infused breed of intelligent piano-rock. Her richly textured, emotive voice and compelling song interpretations make it easy to see how she was nominated and won the Female Rising Star and Alternative Entertainer categories in the Independent Music Awards before even turning 16. Halie writes with passion and delivers with a keyboard-driven focus carried along by her dynamic vocals. She has garnered multiple songwriting awards in almost every music genre from well-respected sources including the Billboard International and John Lennon Songwriting contests, and took an Independent Songwriter of the Year award before she had graduated from high school.

Growing up on an island in Southeast Alaska, much of Halie’s diverse music exposure came early-on from listening to everything public radio had to offer and her parent’s eclectic music selections. Says Loren, “I loved Jazz the most out of any genre when I was younger and I doubt that would have been the case had I been raised in a less isolated area. My favorites as a kid were Nat King Cole, Ella Fitzgerald, Etta James, and Diana Krall-and they still are some of my favorites today.” From her first on-stage jazz performance at the Sitka Fine Arts Camp at age 10, Halie knew music was to play a big role in her life. After moving to the ‘lower 48’, she was quickly ‘discovered’ by Northwest music communities and touted as a rare vocal talent, and music opportunities immediately began coming her way. Within months of making the move, she was being invited to be a main performer in a sold-out John Denver Tribute Concert Series that got a lot of exposure around the Northwest-it was an exceptional learning experience for a 13-year-old. By age 14, her musical influences had expanded to a wide array of eclectic artists, but she found herself especially drawn to singer/songwriters such as Sarah McLachlan and Paula Cole and she began to write her own music, with three of the first original songs she wrote riding in a car on a family road trip receiving 1st place awards in folk, country and jazz categories-the judges in the competition were doubly impressed once they learned their top winner wasn’t even old enough to drive yet.

Graduating early from high school at 17, Halie moved to Nashville to further pursue songwriting and industry experience. She spent the next 1-1/2 years in that music-saturated town writing, recording, performing, and exploring Nashville’s extensive musical offerings. She found herself writing and forming long-lasting friendships with the wonderful writers and musicians who call Nashville home while cultivating many new life-experiences as she figured out life in the “big city”, away from everyone and everything familiar. Although she made the decision to expand her musical horizons beyond the country music realm, those experiences and kind, caring people influenced her immensely as a blossoming songwriter and were key factors in some of the artistic paths she was to choose in the years ahead.

On returning to the Northwest to attend College, Halie completely stayed away from music for about six months before she sought the writing muse again. That’s when she “re-discovered” playing the piano, the instrument that has become such an inexorable part of her writing and performing throughout the past couple of years. She had abandoned piano lessons at an early age after becoming frustrated by sight-reading skills that could not match her natural aptitude toward ear-training. After an off-and-on love/hate relationship with the guitar over the next year, she decided to stick with being satisfied with keeping her voice as her only true instrument. However, after shifting away from Nashville and the country-oriented music scene, the need to truly explore her musical potential led her yet again to her long-forgotten friend, the piano-“it all seemed to fall into place very quickly once I sat down at the piano and deliberately attempted to compose a song with that instrument… I felt like I was finally tapping into a voice inside my creative self that was saying to me ‘wow, it sure took you long enough!'” says Loren. The layers of her music took on a whole new flavoring and depth once the piano became the core foundation she built her material around. As one fan so aptly described it after attending one of her house concerts…” Halie Loren’s music gets in your head, plunges you into darkly-effervescent musical waters and pulls you on a journey through the emotional gauntlet with her-sorta like a molasses-dipped combination of Tori/Sarah/Joni”.

Halie’s live performances highlight her intense emotional outpouring and commanding stage presence. She has headlined full bands in front of thousands, spiced up jazz trios in intimate club settings, and brought down the house at musical festivals. She also plays solo, with her trusty keyboard as her only companion, including showcases in New York City (International Songwriters’ Guild), Nashville (famed Bluebird Café) and in Seattle (Rockrgrl International Conference). She’s collaborated with many well-known and respected writers and numerous other music industry veterans, all while going through her teenage years and preparing for college. Though often compared to other modern female artists, she has been able to hold on to her own unique musical voice.

In her senior year of college, Halie continues performing throughout the Northwest. For the past 8 months, she has been working on her newest (and first) solo CD effort, “Full Circle.” Loren initially planned to take the DIY route literally and do it all herself, but she soon found herself overwhelmed time wise as well as with some of the technical aspects. She invited her friend/fellow musician James House in as a co-producer/engineer and all-around make-it-sound-right person. House’s attention to detail on the CD brought clarity to the tracks that keep them fresh and alive throughout the CD. Released July 7, 2006, the album’s collection of eleven of her most recent songs and a Joni Mitchell cover is a snapshot in time of Halie’s musical journey. The material showcases her as a compelling vocalist as well as a talented pianist in her own right. Reviewers are giving the CD high marks, with no small portion of their praise aimed toward the writing skills of this young artist. It is a work that is incontestably “Halie”, with her having not only created the music, but also having playing a major role in the production, recording, and engineering as well as designing the CD cover.

Artists are cautioned to avoid taking a broad approach in their music in today’s genre-centric radio format, and instead are told to choose a narrowly-focused path and aim down the middle to help insure their music gets radio play. That’s too bad because once you hear Halie Loren, you readily agree that she really can ‘do it all’ and do it so well you want to hear her do it again. Loren doesn’t see herself taking the narrow path because she knows this is just the beginning of her musical journey and she’s ready to explore and find out what’s up ahead.

Olga Salamanca grew up all over the Midwest as her family moved from state to state. She remembers happy memories in the black hills of South Dakota as well as the very flat plains of North Dakota. She also remembers dreading piano lessons with various teachers and then slowly the music lessons phased out. Music didn’t enter again until 12 years later.

Olga eventually moved to southern California where she graduated from UC Irvine with a psychology degree. It was only after college when someone showed her a few chords on the guitar when Olga realized her talent for singing and songwriting. Olga’s dormant gift surfaced bringing to light an artist with raw natural talent.

Olga moved to San Francisco for graduate school in 1999 and this move somehow served as a catalyst for songwriting. Olga began to hit the San Francisco open mic scene with her acoustic guitar performing live for the first time. She let her brilliant voice breakthrough and soon became a favorite among the scene.

Although difficult to describe, Olga’s musical style has been compared to Fiona Apple, Mazzy Star, and Portishead. Olga conveys a musical honesty that is truly rare. Her voice and songs captivate any audience with the simplicity of just her and an acoustic guitar. Olga now plays with a full band adding a rich flavor that would tempt any palate. She and her band have performed at various venues throughout the bay area gaining popularity with each show.

With her debut album, Pale Light, Olga presents songs and lyrics that resonate deep within. You will find catchy tunes that make you want to rock out to sweet ballads that pierce your heart. Olga is an emerging artist that is guaranteed to move you.

Rebekah Jordan’s “the trouble with fiction” is music for wallflowers and dreamers with a.d.d, a gentle mix of genres held together by velvety vocals and a unique point of view, and not what people tend to expect from a girl raised in an all black neighborhood in Cleveland.

“My father worked in a steel mill when I was young, and when he came home he wanted to get as far away from that world as possible. Music was the easiest escape.” So Rebekah grew up in a home filled with the sounds of everything from Debussy to Donny Hathaway, João Gilberto to James Cleveland and with the sense that musically, anything is possible, a concept in direct opposition to the urban limitations surrounding her.

As much as she loved music, pursuing it as a career never seemed feasible or wise. “Where I’m from you grow up and you get a job. A real job.” So after high school, she went off to college to study biomedical engineering. “I showed up wearing mocassins and mood rings, blasting the Cocteau Twins. To say I didn’t fit in is an understatement. People always thought I was in the wrong building. They would point me towards the art department. One day I realized they were right.” So here we are.

Rebekah financed, produced and is now releasing her 6 song EP, “The Trouble With Fiction” through her own Tea Party Records. For the recordings, Rebekah enlisted the help of the talented (and wonderfully sarcastic) musicians who play with her on stage, Butch (from the Eels, Rufus Wainwright and Tracy Chapman) on drums and percussion, John Ballinger (from Rufus Wainwright) on guitar and clarinet, and Jessica Catron on cello. The EP consists of 5 original songs and what is becoming a signature cover of “Dreams” by Stevie Nicks.

Rebekah never imagined she’d be wearing so many hats, artist, producer, label. “Being independent is more than a notion. I certainly never planned it this way, this is just how it has happened. And it’s hard. But with each little victory you’re more encouraged and it is incredibly empowering watching these little seeds you plant grow.” Thanks to many sleepless nights, Rebekah is starting to get airplay on stations like WRAS in Atlanta, CFUV in Victoria, CKUT in Montreal, KUMD in Duluth and WXPN in Philadelphia. And Rebekah was just chosen to perform this fall at the 2005 Nemo Music Conference, held every year in Boston. She will use the Nemo showcase as an anchor for her first east coast mini-tour. How she’ll organize and finance it is anybody’s guess. But she’s not discouraged by the daunting task ahead of her. “Obstacles are a given. I’m learning to welcome the chaos, it’s what makes the calm so sweet.”

For Charlotte Martin, the most important thing is making a connection.

“Every single part of me is a piece of somebody else,” says the piano-playing chanteuse. From connecting her life’s tales with her powerful lyrics, to her fans that see themselves in her songs, Martin is an extraordinary kind of songwriter that builds close ties with anyone who hears her music.

Evoking influences as diverse as Kate Bush, PJ Harvey, Sarah McLachlan, Fiona Apple, early Tori Amos and Joni Mitchell – but still very much her own musician – Martin’s music is a telling snapshot of her life.

A not-so-closet Goth with bleach-blonde hair, Martin has a knack for crafting emotionally-complex songs that continually flirt with pop structures. While her beautiful voice and piano-playing prowess offer an entrée into her music, it’s Martin’s uncompromising lyrics that keep you coming back.

With a flamboyant twang achieved through a blend of uncalculated southern eavesdropping and California coastal wallowing, Patria Jacobs’ songs are built around piano, guitar, bass and drum. They are songs are an eclectic collection of pop, dirgy ballads and country flavored songs.

Texas born, this California dwelling songwriter reveals her nicotined chicory roots through her lyrics while her voice maintains a metropolitan nuance that betrays her wanderings. Patria Jacobs lyrics don’t just sound Southern, they are. Patria currently resides in Los Angeles but she was born in Houston, Texas and spend her early years in places like Waco and New Caney, Texas. As soon as the clock struck “legal”, Patria moved to San Francisco where she joined her first band, The Startles but Patria is probably best known as the singer and principal songwriter for the dreamy, atmospheric pop-rock band, Rubyfish, and band that flourished in pre-hype Silver Lake, California.

After returning to the South and living in Hot Springs, Arkansas for almost a year, Patria found herself obsessed with the Southern dialect, and begun eavesdropping and taking rabid notes. Since returning to Los Angeles, Patria recently revealed her southern and twisted lyrics on her first solo release, the spoken work/rap/groove Do the Pink remix project. Co-produced by Stew, Doten and Patria, Do the Pink has seven versions: remixes by Cheeba, Stew, The Mighty One, Doten/TrendComa and Pickles. The various mixes cross electronic, dance funky, low-rider and pop ground. The Cheeba mix featured an animated flash video which can be found at http://www.dothepink.com/video.html

For the past two years Patria has performed live around LA and collaborated with various musicians. Patria’s collaborations with Stew (Negro Problem) and Doten (Double Naught Spy Car) ultimately led to the recording and co-production of her first full-length solo record, Poison of the Sea which will be released on June 14th.

Nerina Pallot

Nerina Pallot is based in England (London, I believe) But for a time she lived in India as a child.

Her fascination with music started pretty early. She’s also been somewhat of an instrument hoarder. She bought herself her first guitar when she was 11.

She became obsessed with Bon Jovi and Stone Roses. Then later decided to raid her parents’ record collection and found Simon & Garfunkel, Carole King and Paul Simon.

Nerina went to English boarding school on a scholarship where she played violin and sang opera.

The then went into music school for college and studied classical piano and voice. She was writing songs on both piano and guitar but had given up the violin for the cello.

She later bought a bass on a whim because she thought she’d probably want to learn how to play someday.

She ended up working for a record label while she was recording her first release. She also recorded a song with Delerium, which went to #1 on the UK Club charts.

In December 2005 she was signed to 14th Floor records. They re-released her CD, Fires in 2006.

Now that she’s signed she will have lots of disposable income and will be able to buy all the musical instruments her little heart desires.

Oksana Kolesnikova

Pianist/composer/entertainer Oksana Kolesnikova, was born in the city of Barnaul, Siberia. She came to the US when she was 15, (ten years ago, as of 2004) Her parents wanted to give a better future to their children which include Oksana, a younger brother and a younger sister.

When asked how she got interested in music she says, “I can pinpoint the exact moment I fell totally and forever in love with music. I was five years old, and my father, mother and I had just moved from Siberia, in far-eastern Russia, to Kazakhstan. That’s where I first went to school. And it was then that one day I noticed a beautiful young woman seated on a bench, hands flitting like birds across black and white piano keys, music pouring seemingly from her fingertips. I was transfixed. When my father came into the room and saw me watching the pianist, he positively beamed.”

A week later, she auditioned and was accepted to a local music school. There she practiced three to five hours a day. When she came to the US she was trying to decide what career to pursue. She wanted to make it music but felt she ought to do something a bit more practical such as medicine. Her answer came at church when she asked for guidance and heard beautiful piano music. When asked if she regrets not going into medicine she says, “I think some people are alive today because I didn’t pursue it.”

She has since graduated with honors from Florida State University.

Though she plays classical, blues, rock and pop, her musical influences are the classics especially Rachmaninoff and Tchaikovsky.

“When I play or learn a new classical masterpiece, I enjoy the thrill of mastering the difficult technical passages and discovering new messages hidden between the notes. I love listening to symphonies and concertos because, every time, I discover a new meaning or interpretation that I missed before. It’s like reading the novel, where you will get the whole concept right away, but the details will come after reading it over again.”

Final quote:
“I can play anywhere, even on the moon. I’m a people pianist. As long as I’m connecting my music with people, I’m happy.”

Gabrielle Angelique

Gabrielle was born into a loving caring family. They did not have a lot of money and so they scrimped and saved in order to send her to the best private schools they could find.

Gabrielle had a rare interest in music. She began playing harp at age 6 and has been playing ever since. She often found herself in trouble during lessons for not practicing the sheet music because so often she wanted to create a different arrangement of the song or write her own. The practicing paid off and to Gabrielle’s good fortune; she was able to study under master instructors of many different genres of music, which eventually inspired her to bend the boundaries of music.

Gabrielle and her husband now tour the country 200 days a year selling Gabrielle’s music and their handmade jewelry at fine art shows across the United States. Traveling to different cities and discovering the eclectic flavors of each place has inspired Gabrielle’s music in many ways. For example, With her latest album ‘Dance With the Stars’ she was thoroughly pleased to find people of all ages and walks of life also shared her passion and excitement for fairytale worlds.

Gabrielle’s latest ambition is to travel the world and incorporate her findings into a new otherworldly sound, as a traveler would tell campfire tales.

Gabrielle’s advice to aspiring musicians is “Never forget the unlimited potential within you. Follow your heart and your dreams become your reality.”

With the release of a new 11-song compact disc, “This Is Mine” (Enchanted Records), the music of Stacie Rose is began to attract major attention. She appeared on national TV singing the chorus of Simon & Garfunkel’s “America” in August of 2002 when ABC-TV launched a campaign for Peter Jennings’ six part series “In Search Of America.” “Mine”, the title track from the album, This is Mine, was utilized in an AMC promo campaign the entire month of March 2003 on American Movie Classics, while “Shine” – the third track from her disc of all original material – found itself in the independent film “Closing Time.”

Born and raised in New Jersey to music loving parents the New York based singer grew up surrounded by song. Sounds of the Beatles, Billie Holiday, Billy Joel, Frank Sinatra, and the Bee Gees – from jazz to folk to classic rock these impressions steered her creative development, so much so that the future vocalist/writer began playing and singing at an early age.

In her college years Rose bought a guitar in a London pawnshop, the instrument rife with rebellious bumper stickers served in putting her thoughts and ideas into musical form. She started The Stacie Rose Band as soon as she graduated Ithaca College, and a rep from, Maverick Records, liked the songs and the voice, but not the heaviness of the group. Stacie knew she wasn’t in the right place or the right situation, so she went back to square one, wrote more songs, and on a quest for someone to help her shape her sound.

Robert L. Smith was one of a half dozen producers who came to see Stacie live. Having cut his teeth on helping such singers as Mariah Carey develop their sound, he knew what was needed to get Stacie’s songs the attention they deserved. Surrounding her with some of NYC’s best musicians proved to be the key to retaining a simple and clean elegance.

A gifted artist with many talents, Stacie Rose has the intuition and drive to not only create great pop tunes which future generations will love and cherish, she has the potential to develop a wide audience as the music unfolds, fans experiencing music that corresponds to the recordings live, never copying exactly what the musicians and she crafted before. The mainstream needs something to move people and bring some harmony, heartache, and maybe a little hope and joy into their lives – and that’s what Stacie Rose is expressing, continuously challenging herself and the musicians performing these original tunes, sharing her individuality with colleagues and audiences. It’s a mission that Stacie achieves with a simple elegance that has already garnered appreciative reviews.

Stacie is not a product of the studio. A real singer and writer, and performer, her most recent project, ‘This is Yours’ is a prime example of an artist in touch with what What it takes to transform studio perfection to live energy. Originally intended as a document for personal use, the performances captured, along with endless requests from fans, demanded the Recordings to be released.

Judith Owen‘s love of music started quite early. Her father is an acclaimed opera singer, and much of her youth was spent literally waiting in the wings. After University, Judith moved to Los Angeles, where a fateful meeting with Shawn Colvin led to a guest appearance on the tune “Suicide Alley” from Colvin’s “A Few Good Repairs” album. Soon afterward, through another chance introduction, director Jim Brooks then featured Judith’s song “Hand on My Heart” in his film, “As Good As It Gets”.

Next up, Judith was introduced to producer Glen Ballard, he of Alanis Morissette, No Doubt and Dave Matthews fame. Ballard was, so to speak, blown senseless by Judith’s songs and live performance, and promptly signed her to his Java Records label. Says Ballard: “Judith has the right combination of the classic singer/songwriter and the most exotic flavor in the cabinet….and she packs an emotional wallop.” Carefully Judith and Glen worked on the album that would change the world, if only it could be released. But alas, that was not to be.

Shockingly (except it’s the music business), Java was dismantled while most of its artist roster watched helplessly. The only salvation was that Judith was able to wrest control back of the record, which is now titled Limited Edition. Not one to sit around and mope, Judith set up a website and promptly set about getting songs placed in tv shows and in films. Felicity and Charmed and The Simpsons, have featured songs
As Judith says, “I’m yellow and they got my nose right. I love that they chose the absolute least likely song I have for a cabaret setting.”

“Judith Owen is an exclamation point. Gifted, witty and Welsh, Judith combines the pounding piano sensitivity of Elton John and Ben Folds with a Pythonesque sense of humor.”

Emily Zuzik

Granddaughter of a trucker and a coal miner, Emily Zuzik hails from the Southwestern Pennsylvania town of Greensburg. She gave her first public performance singing Dolly Parton’s “9 to 5” to her fifth grade religion class in Catholic school. By eighth grade, she was performing original work in front of her school. And the rest, as we say, is history…

Named a to-be-watched “Girl Underground” by Women Who Rock Magazine, Emily Zuzik released her solo debut, “The Way It’s Got to Be,” on Mother’s Discontent Music in February 2003. The multi-range singer has wowwed audiences with her dynamic performances, strong voice and catchy rock songs. Watch out for her first video later this summer for her first single, “That’s The Way.”

“All I really wanted to say was that your live show absolutely rocks, completely…electronic accompaniment or not, you have ‘it’, whatever ‘it’ is…the stage presence, an amazing voice, and all the talent to carry it off.”–Holly Figueroa, Cake Records recording artist and founder of Indiegrrl.com

Jodi Shaw

Born in Newfoundland Canada, Jodi began her writing career as a poet. After a short stint as a student in a creative writing program, she left academia for the world of music. Her debut album The Myth of Patience, was selected by Boston’s Metronome Magazine as one of its Top Five Album Picks for July 2001.

Her second record, The Pie-Love Sky, was released in May 2003. Several tracks from this record receive airplay on nationally syndicated radio programs, including Acoustic Cafe, which named her named her as “One to Watch” for the month of August 2003.

Her song “The Forger” was a winner in Rockrgrl Magazine’s “Discoveries 2005” Song Contest and appears on the recently released “Rockrgrl Discoveries 2005” compilation CD. Another song, “In Cabrini-Green,” was selected as one of the few songs that now comes pre-loaded on every new RAVE-MP3 player, and her song “Out of Love” was chosen by JPF Music to appear on Vol.2 of their compilation entitled “Fifteen Minutes.”

“Savannah Smiles” a track from her latest collection (Snow on Saturn 2005), was runner-up in the folk/country category of 2005 U.K. Songwriting Contest. Five other songs were chosen as finalists in the rock/indie, pop, and folk/country categories.

Jodi’s distinctive voice is characterized by a certain “delicate toughness” one finds in such artists as Suzanne Vega or Shawn Colvin. Her songs have been called “sophisticated nursery rhymes” and “intellectual lullabies.”

Molly Zenobia

(note: this bio was written by Molly when the spotlight first went live in 2002)

Both my parents started taking piano lessons the summer before I was born. I don’t really know what the significance of this is except it might be an interesting fact, being that the piano is my main instrument, one of my main loves. I was born December 8th, 1979… even at the start I was an insomniac. My mother has countless stories of me quietly trying to stay up and not sleep. She says I didn’t want to miss anything. She would put me in my crib at night, but by morning she¹d find me passed out in some random place in the house. She seems to remember finding me in doorways a lot. I don’t often find myself spending time in doorways any longer, except for the occasional earthquake, having grown up in California.

I’m 23 now. (This info is assuming no one felt like doing the math.) I tend now to spend quality time with the piano, books, the outdoors, my imagination, family and friends, music, paints, or whatever sudden spontaneous inspiration lends itself, like sitting up all night to catch the sunrise over this little lake I live above.

I graduated from college 2002. Now that was an experience. When anyone asks me what I learned in college, I say this… “In college I learned that I don’t really know anything.” College was quite humbling.

It¹s a luxury to be drawn to a book and find the time to read it to go to a museum and spend hours studying just one painting to stay up all night and see a sunrise with the ducks. Artist¹s hours. Feeding the eyes like a glutton. But nothing goes to waste. This career I am pushing for is constantly humbling. I believe that everything I create comes through the voices of what I experience, so I have this cycle of filling myself with everything I can (so to speak). If I didn¹t create, I¹d be insane. Certifiable. If it wasn¹t piano keys, it¹d be violin strings, or paint brushes, or clay, or chisels whatever I could get my hands on. It¹s this unstoppable need to translate and transform the universe into some way I can express my take on being alive. I didn¹t watch basketball in high school. I played it, and I played it as a contact sport. I didn¹t watch TV. I painted life sized versions of things standing under a fourteen foot tree on the (high) walls of my bedroom . I don¹t knowŠ it seems I¹m either absorbing and reflecting, or traveling at the speed of sound. I like the edges of the spectrum. I love the rush, the relief, the colors. It¹s the only thing I know.

Martina Sorbara

Don’t be too surprised by the musical variety heard in Martina’s music. She is amulti-talented artist who takes the time to make her own guitars and her own clothes, as well as her own music, which is her primary focus.

One of the many outstanding talents that Martina possesses, and that she remains very modest about, is the construction of her own guitars. “Building my own guitars has given me an intimate relationship with my instrument. I don’t know if it sounds better than other guitars, but I sure love it more than other guitars.” She also enjoys spending her time sketching and focusing on visual art. “I consider art as important to me as my music.”

Performing on stage with only the accompaniment of a drummer, Martina plays both piano and guitar, switching from one instrument to the next throughout her set.

Her interest in the guitar began at age 11. At 15 she began writing her own music and performing it for others. She has already played at numerous festivals, including SXSW in Austin, Texas, The Edmonton Folk Festival, and has opened for such acts as Sarah Harmer, The Be Good Tanyas, Hawksley Workman and Billy Bragg.

As a songwriter, she says, “I feel very satisfied with myself, and my songs, when a listener tells me they understand exactly what I mean. Ideally, I want people to just enjoy the melody and relate to my sentiments.”

Devil Doll

A captivating theme for a collection of “Blue Velvet” style songs which dwells upon the alter personality of singer, Colleen Duffy.

In her debut CD, The Queen Of Pain, Colleen transforms into Devil Doll, who smoothly blends the musical and songwriting influences of an abrasive but forthcoming Joan Jett, with the sexy emotional appeal of a 1940’s vixen. This eclectic blend of rock and blues with a splash of pop appeal will surely grab any listener’s attention. It is this unique potion that forms the platform of the Devil Doll philosophy: “Be what you want and never be a victim.”

This philosophy is found in three of the singles with reflections captured in songs such as St. Christopher, Things You Make Me Do and King of Brooklyn. Devil Doll has already made a huge impact on audiences on both the East and West coasts and will continue the progression internationally next year. The music video for St. Christopher begins shooting in September of 2002. Devil Doll will also be showcased at the 2002 Radio Music Awards Mega Blast in Las Vegas later this year.

Look for the Devil Doll song, “Liquor Store,” in the MGM film, New Best Friend, and the Devil Doll song, “Faith in Love,” can be spotted in the Buffy The Vampire Slayer episode, “The Harsh Light of Day.”

Often described as the next up and coming female music sensation, Devil Doll’s Queen Of Pain will take one on a fascinating inner journey into love, rejection and the inner conflicts we must all face and contemplate. The question lies not within the content of the songs but in the willingness you have to explore that side of you.

Jonatha Brooke

Singer/songwriter/guitarist Jonatha Brooke began issuing albums that merged folk and pop during the early 1990s, first as a member of a female duo named the Story and later as a solo artist. Brooke formed the Story (originally called “Jonatha & Jennifer” during the duo’s early years) along with another vocalist, Jennifer Kimball, who attended Massachusette’s Amherst College with Brooke in the early ’80s. Despite playing regular local gigs during their college career, the girls never issued any recordings and took a break after graduation, during which time Brooke joined a dance troupe. But by the end of the ’80s, the group had re-formed under a new moniker, the Story, and issued a demo called Over Oceans in 1989. The Story was promptly signed to the independent Green Linnet label, which issued the duo’s debut album, Grace in Gravity, in 1991. It wasn’t long before Elektra Records expressed interest in the band, in turn reissuing their debut the same year, as well as a sophomore effort, The Angel in the House, two years later.

By 1994, however, the Story had split up for good and Brooke began pursuing a solo career. Despite Kimball’s absence, Brooke’s 1995 solo debut, Plumb, was nevertheless credited to Jonatha Brooke & the Story. Brooke was the sole creditor beginning with 1997’s 10 Cent Wings, which also marked a shift from her earlier folk-pop material to a more radio-friendly style. This shift continued with such additional releases as 1999’s Live and 2001’s Steady Pull, the latter of which was co-produced by Brooke and renowned studioman Bob Clearmountain (known for his work with Bryan Adams, the Rolling Stones, the Corrs, and Hall & Oates, among others). Beginning in the late ’90s, Brooke’s albums were issued via her very own record label, Bad Dog.

In 2002, Brooke performed a pair of songs on Disney’s Return to Never Land soundtrack, contributing an original composition (“I’ll Try”) and a cover (“The Second Star to the Right”). Two years later, she performed a set of ten shows at the Public Theater in New York, the highlights of which were collected for the 2006 release of Live in New York, complete with a DVD of the concert. Careful What You Wish For followed in 2007, and Brooke subsequently delved into Woody Guthrie’s lyric journals for her follow-up effort. Released in 2008, The Works paired her original music with Guthrie’s previously unheard lyrics. Greg Prato, All Music Guide

Renaissance rock, elegant alternative, soulful siren songs… Call it what you will, singer/songwriter/violinist/pianist Emilie Autumn is that rarest of musical breeds: a true original.

Born in Malibu, California, on 22 September, 1979, Emilie made music her first language, learning to read notes before she learned the alphabet. Playing the violin since the age of four, she grew up in the world of concert halls and European tours, though never denied her fondness for Miles Davis and Jimi Hendrix. Performing jazz as well as classical music, Emilie gained notoriety as a versatile yet virtuosic performer in her early teens. Having quit formal education at the age of nine, she educated herself by self-imposed immersion into her favorite subjects: history, literature, and art. Her natural fascination for times past led her to embark on what she describes as a “lifelong archaeological exploration” into the music of the medieval, renaissance, and baroque eras, becoming one of the youngest champions of the period performance movement and earning a classical recording deal at age 18.

While writing jazz, rock, and symphonic originals, Emilie’s pop and rock songs have been recorded by international performers, and her symphonic works have found their way into a number of films, both in the US and abroad. Most unexpected was Emilie’s debut as a vocalist, as introduced on her new album, “ENCHANT”, available on Seraph Records. Displaying a natural and previously unrevealed talent, Emilie’s voice and formidable song-writing abilities captured the attention of Seraph Records who signed the 20-year-old artist in the fall of 2000.

While promoting her new album, “ENCHANT”, which combines her vocal, compositional, and poetic skills as well as her mastery of the violin and piano, Emilie continues to perform classically with her nouveau-historical ensemble, “Ravensong”, and plans to release a full-length album with the band in the near future. Emilie’s other albums include a special edition classical album recorded in her teens and available on her website
